Measurement of the production of (anti)nuclei in p–Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

Measurements of (anti)proton, (anti)deuteron, and (anti)3He production in the rapidity range -1< y < 0 as a function of the transverse momentum and event multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV are presented. The coalescence parameters B 2 and B 3 , measured as a function of the transverse momentum per nucleon and of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density, confirm a smooth evolution from low to high multiplicity across different collision systems and energies. The ratios between (anti)deuteron and (anti) 3 He yields and those of (anti)protons are also reported as a function of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density. A comparison with the predictions of the statistical hadronization and coalescence models for different collision systems and center-of-mass energies favors the coalescence description for the deuteron-to-proton yield ratio with respect to the canonical statistical model.

Characterization of nuclear breakup as a function of hard-scattering kinematics using dijets measured by ATLAS in p+Pb collisions

This Letter analyzes the sensitivity of event geometry estimators to the initial-state kinematics of hard scattering in proton–lead collisions. This analysis uses dijets as a proxy for the parton–parton scattering configuration, correlating it with event geometry estimators, namely the energy deposited in the Zero-Degree Calorimeter and the transverse energy recorded in the Forward Calorimeter in the Pb-going direction. The analysis uses data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider with a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 56 nb − 1 . The jets are measured within the pseudorapidity interval −2.8 < η < 4.5, where positive η values correspond to the direction of the proton beam. Results are presented as a function of the Bjorken-x of the parton originating from the proton, xp . Both event geometry estimators are found to be dependent on xp , with the energy deposited in the Zero-Degree Calorimeter about six times less sensitive to xp compared with the transverse energy deposited in the Forward Calorimeter.

Relationship among the Crystal Structure, Texture, and Macroscopic Properties of Tetragonal (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O 3 Ferroelectrics Investigated by In Situ High-Energy Synchrotron Diffraction

In situ diffraction investigations have played an important role in experimentally revealing the mechanism of piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. In this study, a pure tetragonal ferroelectric ceramic of La-doped PbZr 0.5 Ti 0.5 O 3 (LaPZT50) was investigated to eliminate the complex influence of phase coexistence. The electric field evolutions of the crystal structure, domain switching, and lattice deformation of the tetragonal phase have been revealed by in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, we found that the crystal structure of LaPZT50 is quite stable, showing a negligible change in the Pb–O bond length, unit cell volume, and spontaneous polarization upon application of an in situ external electric field. Importantly, the maximum macroscopic polarization of tetragonal LaPZT50 is defined by the 111-oriented grains. As determined by the intensity difference, the switching of non-180° domains plays a more significant role in contributing to the macroscopic strain than lattice deformation. These results further imply that the phase coexistence around the morphotropic phase boundary facilitates domain wall motion in the tetragonal phase and improves the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

2D Homologous Series SrFM n BiS n +2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n = 0, 1) and Commensurately Modulated Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2

In this work, we report three new mixed-anion two-dimensional (2D) compounds: SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 . Their structures as well as the parent compound SrFBiS 2 were refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, with the sequence of SrFBiS 2 , SrFPbBiS 3 , and SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 defining the new homologous series SrFM n BiS n+2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n= 0, 1). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 has a different structure, which is modulated with a q vector of 1/3b* and was refined in superspace group X2/m(0 β 0)00 as well as in the 1x3x1 superstructure with space group C2/m (with similar results). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 features hexagonal layers of alternating [Sr 2 F 2 ] 2+ and [Bi 2/3 S 2 ] 2- , and the modulated structure arises from the unique ordering pattern of Sr 2+ cations. SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 are semiconductors with band gaps of 1.31, 1.21, and 1.85 eV, respectively. The latter compound exhibits room temperature red photoluminescence at ~ 700 nm.

Real-Time Investigation of Sn(II) Oxidation in Pb-Free Halide Perovskites by X-ray Absorption and Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Sn(II) halide perovskites are a less toxic alternative to Pb-based materials in perovskite solar cells, but oxidation to Sn(IV) introduces additional degradation pathways. Improving stability requires mechanistic pictures of O 2 - and H 2 O-induced degradation and their synergy. In this work, we demonstrate that X-ray absorption spectroscopy reports the average valency of the bulk material, allowing oxidation kinetics to be measured from minutes to days. Optical and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate the challenge of isolating oxidative degradation with techniques lacking element specificity and oxidation state sensitivity. Finally, 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy is presented as a lab-based technique capable of providing information on valency and speciation throughout oxidation.

Local Chemical Clustering Enabled Ultrahigh Capacitive Energy Storage in Pb-Free Relaxors

Designing Pb-free relaxors with both a high capacitive energy density (W rec ) and high storage efficiency (η) remains a remarkable challenge for cutting-edge pulsed power technologies. Local compositional heterogeneity is crucial for achieving complex polar structure in solid solution relaxors, but its role in optimizing energy storage properties is often overlooked. Here, in this paper, we report that an exceptionally high W rec of 15.2 J cm –3 along with an ultrahigh η of 91% can be achieved through designing local chemical clustering in Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 –BaTiO 3 -based relaxors. A three-dimensional atomistic model derived from neutron/X-ray total scattering combined with reverse Monte Carlo method reveals the presence of subnanometer scale clustering of Bi, Na, and Ba, which host differentiated polar displacements, and confirming the prediction by density functional theory calculations. This leads to a polar state with small polar clusters and strong length and direction fluctuations in unit-cell polar vectors, thus manifesting improved high-field polarizability, steadily reduced hysteresis, and high breakdown strength macroscopically. The favorable polar structure features also result in a unique field-increased η, excellent stability, and superior discharge capacity. Our work demonstrates that the hidden local chemical order exerts a significant impact on the polarization characteristic of relaxors, and can be exploited for accessing superior energy storage performance.

Critical nematic correlations throughout the superconducting doping range in Bi 2–z Pb z Sr 2–y La y CuO 6+x

Charge modulations have been widely observed in cuprates, suggesting their centrality for understanding the high-T c superconductivity in these materials. However, the dimensionality of these modulations remains controversial, including whether their wavevector is unidirectional or bidirectional, and also whether they extend seamlessly from the surface of the material into the bulk. Material disorder presents severe challenges to understanding the charge modulations through bulk scattering techniques. We use a local technique, scanning tunneling microscopy, to image the static charge modulations on Bi 2–z Pb z Sr 2–y La y CuO 6+x . The ratio of the phase correlation length ξ CDW to the orientation correlation length ξ orient points to unidirectional charge modulations. By computing new critical exponents at free surfaces including that of the pair connectivity correlation function, we show that these locally 1D charge modulations are actually a bulk effect resulting from classical 3D criticality of the random field Ising model throughout the entire superconducting doping range.

Large electromechanical strain and unconventional domain switching near phase convergence in a Pb-free ferroelectric

In many ferroelectrics, large electromechanical strains are observed near regions of composition- or temperature- driven phase coexistence. Phenomenologically, this is attributed to easy re-orientation of the polarization vector and/or phase transition, although their effects are highly convoluted and difficult to distinguish experimentally. Here, we used synchrotron X-ray scattering and digital image correlation to differentiate between the microscopic mechanisms leading to large electrostrains in an exemplary Pb-free piezoceramic Sn-doped barium calcium zirconate titanate. Large electrostrains of ~0.2% measured at room-temperature are attributed to an unconventional effect, wherein polarization switching is aided by a reversible phase transition near the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary. Additionally, electrostrains of ~0.1% or more could be maintained from room temperature to 140°C due to a succession of different microscopic mechanisms. In situ X-ray diffraction elucidates that while 90° domain reorientation is pertinent below the Curie temperature ( T C ), isotropic distortion of polar clusters is the dominant mechanism above T C .

Is Cs 2 TiBr 6 a promising Pb-free perovskite for solar energy applications?

In a quest for Pb-free perovskites suitable for solar energy applications, Cs 2 TiBr 6 has recently been reported as a promising compound, with appropriate optical and electrical properties as well as high stability under environmental stresses. In this study, we pursue investigation on this compound, demonstrating phase pure Cs 2 TiBr 6 powder formation using solution synthesis and providing complementary experimental characterization and theoretical calculations. An experimental absorption onset of around 2.0 eV is extracted and a weak broad photoluminescence is measured. Density functional theory calculations predict an indirect bandgap, parity-forbidden for both the direct and indirect transitions, which explains the weak and Stokes shifted luminescence. Additionally, we highlight the strong instability of Cs 2 TiBr 6 powder in ambient atmosphere. Therefore, our experimental results supported by theoretical calculations differ from previous results and raise doubts on the suitability of Cs 2 TiBr 6 in its pristine form for solar energy applications.

Tuning optical properties and local lone-pair off-centering in “hollow” FA 1− x { en } x Pb η−y Sn y Br 3 perovskites

Hollow metal halide perovskites, while a relatively recent discovery, have already been shown to push the boundaries of tuneability within an inherently limited compositional space. Here, we further expand our knowledge of these complex materials demonstrating the ability to control optical properties and local structure, notably lone-pair induced off-centering. We focus on the mixed metal FA 1−x en x Pb η−y Sn y Br 3 hollow perovskites. These compounds have wide ranging optical gaps from 1.9 eV (deep red) to 2.6 eV (light yellow), combining the anomalous bandgap red-shifting of Pb/Sn mixing with the blue-shifting effects of the organic substitution. Average and local structural studies employing single crystal X-ray diffraction and total X-ray scattering pair distribution function analyses respectively suggest strong incoherent off-centering distortions that are locally correlated with Sn concentration. The inclusion of ethylenediammonium dications appears to regulate metal off-centering, opening new opportunities of research into this phenomenon.

Insights from multinucleon transfer reactions in 206 Pb+ 118 Sn

Multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb + 118 Sn system were measured at E lab = 1200 MeV using the PRISMA large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer. The experiment was conducted at laboratory angles around the grazing angle, covering an angular range of approximately 20°. The resulting differential and total cross sections, along with Q-value distributions for various neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels, are presented. The Q-value distributions suggest a transition from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic collision processes, particularly in channels involving nucleon transfers. The experimental results have been compared with GRAZING code calculations, showing good agreement for few-nucleon transfer channels, while channels with large nucleon transfers are underestimated, indicating the involvement of more complex processes.

Compatibility of FeCrAlMo in Flowing Pb-Li at 600°C to 700°C

A series of monometallic thermal convection loops (TCLs) has been conducted to determine the maximum temperature where FeCrAl alloys have compatibility with eutectic lead lithium (Pb-Li) for a dual-coolant fusion blanket. Pre-oxidizing commercial alloy APMT (Fe-21Cr-5Al-3Mo) for 2 h at 1000°C to form a surface α-Al 2 O 3 layer was very effective in reducing the mass loss of specimens in the hot and cold legs of the most recent TCL that was operated for 1000 h with a peak temperature of 700°C. However, unlike previous experiments, the postexposure room temperature ductility of many of the APMT specimens was degraded to <10% total elongation, and many of the specimens at the highest temperature (>680°C) were severely damaged or were not recovered. Furthermore, wide-angle X-ray scattering found that the pre-formed α-Al 2 O 3 scale transformed to a mixture of trigonal and tetragonal LiAlO 2 . The overall results suggest that the maximum temperature for FeCrAl is limited to <700°C.

Sub Coulomb barrier d+ 208 Pb scattering in the time-dependent basis function approach

We employ the non-perturbative time-dependent basis function (tBF) approach to study the scattering of the deuteron on 208 Pb below the Coulomb barrier. We obtain the bound and discretized scattering states of the projectile, which form the basis representation of the tBF approach, by diagonalizing a realistic Hamiltonian in a large harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the higher-order inelastic scattering effects are noticeable for sub barrier scatterings with the tBF method. We have successfully reproduced experimental sub Coulomb barrier elastic cross section ratios with the tBF approach by considering only the electric dipole (E1) component of the Coulomb interaction between the projectile and the target during scatterings. Here, we find that the correction of the polarization potential to the Rutherford trajectory is dominant in reproducing the data at very low bombarding energies, whereas the role of internal transitions of the deuteron projectile induced by the E1 interaction during the scattering becomes increasingly significant at higher bombarding energies.

Semiclassical treatment of bottomonium suppression and regeneration in 𝑝 + Pb collisions

Here, we study bottomonium suppression in 𝑝 + Pb relative to 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV. Specifically, we combine cold nuclear matter effects (nuclear modifications of the parton densities, energy loss, and momentum broadening) with those from hot nuclear matter (suppression and regeneration) by implementing the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in hydrodynamic simulations. Bottomonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma is evaluated semiclassically, employing two different reaction rates. The first includes quasifree inelastic scattering and gluodissociation employing a perturbative coupling to the medium. The second is based on in-medium 𝑇-matrix calculations where the input potential is constrained by lattice quantum chromodynamics to extract the bottomonium masses and dissociation rates. These semiclassical results are compared to previous calculations in an open quantum system approach and to the experimental data. Predictions for 𝜒 𝑏 suppression at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV are also presented.

Measurement of 𝜔 meson production in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We present the measurement of the 𝑝 T -differential production cross section of 𝜔 mesons in pp and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity by ALICE. In addition, the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb for 𝜔 mesons at LHC energies is presented, complementing the existing measurements of lighter neutral mesons such as the 𝜋 0 and 𝜂. Within the measured 𝑝 T range, the 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb of 𝜔 mesons is compatible with no cold nuclear matter effects within the uncertainties, consistent with previous measurements at lower energies. The 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratio is presented for both collision systems, showing no collision system dependence within the uncertainties. The comparison to previously published 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratios at lower and higher collision energies in pp collisions suggests a decreasing trend of the ratio above 𝑝T = 4 GeV/𝑐 with increasing collision energy. The data in both collision systems are compared to predictions from PYTHIA 8, EPOS LHC, and DPMJET event generators, revealing significant shortcomings in these models’ ability to describe the production of 𝜔 mesons.
