Fabrication of Ionic Covalent Triazine Framework-Linked Membranes via a Facile Sol–Gel Approach

Covalent triazine framework (CTF)-based membranes have shown unique properties and wide applications in energy-related fields, but there is still no efficient strategy capable of affording CTF membranes functionalized with ionic moieties, which will bring extra merits and application possibilities. In this work, a robust CTF membrane with ionic functionalities was fabricated via a sol–gel approach promoted by a superacid (FSO 3 H). The CTF skeleton was constructed via the trimerization of cyano groups in the monomer, and piperazine moieties were introduced as reactive sites for the formation of ammonium cations coupled with FSO 3 – anions within the backbone. The obtained transparent and red protonated polymeric CTF-based membrane (PP-CTF) exhibited significant absorption at 646 nm in the solid-state ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectrum. Comparatively, the neutralized deprotonated counterparts turned to yellow color with a significant blueshift absorption to 492 nm. The theoretical calculation demonstrated that PP-CTF and deprotonated polymeric CTF membrane (DP-CTF) were stable with AB-stacking mode, and PP-CTF had a smaller band gap (0.90 eV) than that of DP-CTF (2.17 eV). The significant optical absorption and emission behavior change of PP-CTF and its robust chemical stability endowed it with the capability to act as pH indicators. The synthetic pathway developed in this work and the performance of the resultant ionic membrane opens new opportunities in the aspects of membrane design, fabrication, and application.

Polymer, Additives, and Processing Effects on N95 Filter Performance

The current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) pandemic has highlighted the need for personal protective equipment, specifically filtering facepiece respirators like N95 masks. While it is common knowledge that polypropylene (PP) is the industry standard material for filtration media, trial and error is often required to identify suitable commercial precursors for filtration media production. This work aims to identify differences between several commercial grades of PP and demonstrate the development of N95 filtration media with the intent that the industry partners can pivot and help address N95 shortages. Three commercial grades of high melt flow index PP were melt blown at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and broadly characterized by several methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and neutron scattering. Despite the apparent similarities (high melt flow and isotacticity) between PP feedstocks, the application of corona charging and charge enhancing additives improve each material to widely varying degrees. From the analysis performed here, the most differentiating factor appears to be related to crystallization of the polymer and the resulting electret formation. Materials with higher crystallization onset temperatures, slower crystallization rates, and larger number of crystallites form a stronger electret and are more effective at filtration.

Hydrogenolysis of Polypropylene and Mixed Polyolefin Plastic Waste over Ru/C to Produce Liquid Alkanes

Catalytic depolymerization of polyolefins is a promising chemical recycling strategy to create value-added products from waste plastics, which are accumulating in landfills and the natural environment at unsustainable rates. The cleavage of strong C–C bonds in polyolefins can be performed using a noble metal and hydrogen via a hydrogenolysis mechanism. Previously, we identified ruthenium nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ru/C) as a highly active heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of polyethylene into liquid and gaseous n-alkanes under mild conditions. In the present study, we investigated the catalytic depolymerization of polypropylene (PP) under mild conditions (200–250 °C, 20–50 bar H 2 ). We demonstrate that Ru/C produces C 5 –C 32 iso-alkane yields above 68% in the absence of solvent and identify trade-offs between product yield and temperature, hydrogen pressure, and reaction time. We apply a rigorous analytical method to quantify all liquid and gaseous alkane products. The characterized catalyst was found to be recyclable after the complete depolymerization of high molecular weight PP (M w ~ 340,000 Da) to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons and after depolymerization of a postconsumer PP centrifuge tube. Finally, the catalyst was shown to be effective in depolymerizing a mixture of high-density polyethylene and PP to produce a mixture of linear and branched liquid alkanes, demonstrating feasibility for the depolymerization of streams of mixed polyolefin waste.

Temporal pre-pulse shaping in dual pulse laser produced plasma for the optimization of the EUV source in tin microdroplet system

Dual-laser beams interacting with small droplets of liquid tin are currently the most efficient systems for producing the 13.5 nm EUV photon radiation source required for the next generation microchips. Usually, EUV light is produced during the second main-pulse stage, while the pre-pulse (PP) is used for target preparation, i.e., droplet preheating, vaporization, and target deformation. However, the PP laser energy can be utilized more efficiently if the EUV producing plasma is being developed during the PP stage as well. In this work, we study the ways of optimization of the PP laser temporal shape to achieve conditions for maximum EUV output during the pre-pulse. The size of the deformed droplet is kept optimized for the following main laser pulse. Our simulations showed a significant increase in the EUV output at the pre-pulse stage when a ramping profile is used for the laser temporal shape. Using the ramped square pre-pulse produces 24% gain in the EUV output in comparison with the standard Gaussian temporal profile (i.e., regular Nd:YAG shape) for the same energy of the laser pulse.

Efficient exact exchange using Wannier functions and other related developments in planewave-pseudopotential implementation of RT-TDDFT

The plane-wave pseudopotential (PW-PP) formalism is widely used for the first-principles electronic structure calculation of extended periodic systems. The PW-PP approach has also been adapted for real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) to investigate time-dependent electronic dynamical phenomena. In this work, we detail recent advances in the PW-PP formalism for RT-TDDFT, particularly how maximally localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) are used to accelerate simulations using the exact exchange. We also discuss several related developments, including an anti-Hermitian correction for the time-dependent MLWFs (TD-MLWFs) when a time-dependent electric field is applied, the refinement procedure for TD-MLWFs, comparison of the velocity and length gauge approaches for applying an electric field, and elimination of long-range electrostatic interaction, as well as usage of a complex absorbing potential for modeling isolated systems when using the PW-PP formalism.

Processing behavior evolution of recycled polypropylene: An integrated experimental and Computer-Aided engineering simulation study

Polypropylene (PP) comprises 21% of global plastics production and 18% of plastics waste, yet less than 1% of solid-waste PP is recycled in the United States (U.S.), representing significant environmental and economic challenges. Mechanical recycling, the most prevalent recycling method, subject's materials to thermomechanical stresses, which typically degrade polymer properties, affecting the quality of polymer products. This study replicates the impact of mechanical recycling through multiple extrusion cycles to examine the effects on PP's processing behavior. Dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements showed stable melting behavior across all processing conditions, while crystallization analysis exhibited consistent shifts in kinetic parameters. Rheological characterization demonstrated progressive viscosity reductions through successive cycles, particularly pronounced at elevated reprocessing temperatures. Here, the integration of this experimental data into injection molding simulations showed that recycled PP maintains viable processing characteristics. Our findings establish quantitative correlations between processing history and material behavior, enabling optimization of processing parameters directly rather than relying on trial-and-error approaches. While these results reflect idealized recycling conditions with minimal contamination, they provide a framework for understanding fundamental property evolution during mechanical recycling.

Vip1 is a kinase and pyrophosphatase switch that regulates inositol diphosphate signaling

Inositol diphosphates (PP-IPs), also known as inositol pyrophosphates, are high-energy cellular signaling codes involved in nutrient and regulatory responses. We report that the evolutionarily conserved gene product, Vip1, possesses autonomous kinase and pyrophosphatase domains capable of synthesis and destruction of D-1 PP-IPs. Our studies provide atomic-resolution structures of the PP-IP products and unequivocally define that the Vip1 gene product is a highly selective 1-kinase and 1-pyrophosphatase enzyme whose activities arise through distinct active sites. Kinetic analyses of kinase and pyrophosphatase parameters are consistent with Vip1 evolving to modulate levels of 1-IP 7 and 1,5-IP 8 . Individual perturbations in kinase and pyrophosphatase activities in cells result in differential effects on vacuolar morphology and osmotic responses. Analogous to the dual-functional key energy metabolism regulator, phosphofructokinase 2, Vip1 is a kinase and pyrophosphatase switch whose 1-PP-IP products play an important role in a cellular adaptation.

Measuring the robustness of predictive probability for early stopping in two-group comparisons

We report physical experiments are often expensive and time-consuming. Test engineers must certify the compatibility of aircraft and their weapon systems before they can be deployed in the field, but the testing required is time consuming, expensive, and resource limited. Adopting Bayesian adaptive designs is a promising way to borrow from the successes seen in the clinical trials domain. The use of predictive probability (PP) to stop testing early and make faster decisions is particularly appealing given the aforementioned constraints. Given the high-consequence nature of the tests performed in the national security space, a strong understanding of new methods is required before being deployed. Although PP has been thoroughly studied for binary data, there is less work with continuous data, where many reliability studies are interested in certifying the specification limits of components. A simulation study evaluating the robustness of this approach indicates early stopping based on PP is reasonably robust to minor assumption violations, especially when only a few interim analyses are conducted. The simulation study also compares PP to conditional power, showing its relative strengths and weaknesses. A post-hoc analysis exploring whether release requirements of a weapon system from an aircraft are within specification with desired reliability resulted in stopping the experiment early and saving 33% of the experimental runs.

Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Studies of the correlations of the two highest transverse momentum (leading) jets in individual Pb+Pb collision events can provide information about the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. In Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, measurements of the leading dijet transverse momentum ($p_T$) correlations are presented. Additionally, measurements in Pb+Pb collisions of the dijet pair nuclear modification factors projected along leading and subleading jet $p_T$ are made. The measurements are performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC with 260 pb –1 of pp data collected in 2017 and 2.2 nb –1 of Pb+Pb data collected in 2015 and 2018. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional leading and subleading jet $p_T$ distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. Results are provided for dijets with leading jet $p_T$ greater than 100 GeV. Measurements of the dijet-yield-normalized $x_{J}$ distributions in Pb+Pb collisions show an increased fraction of imbalanced jets compared to pp collisions; these measurements are in agreement with previous measurements of the same quantity at 2.76 TeV in the overlapping kinematic range. Measurements of the absolutely normalized dijet rate in Pb+Pb and pp collisions are also presented, and show that balanced dijets are significantly more suppressed than imbalanced dijets in Pb+Pb collisions. It is observed in the measurements of the pair nuclear modification factors that the subleading jets are significantly suppressed relative to leading jets with $p_T$ between 100 and 316 GeV for all centralities in Pb+Pb collisions.

Increasing the Thermodynamic Driving Force of the Phosphofructokinase Reaction in Clostridium thermocellum

Glycolysis is an ancient, widespread, and highly conserved metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate. In the canonical pathway, the phosphofructokinase (PFK) reaction plays an important role in controlling flux through the pathway. Clostridium thermocellum has an atypical glycolysis and uses pyrophosphate (PP i ) instead of ATP as the phosphate donor for the PFK reaction. The reduced thermodynamic driving force of the PP i -PFK reaction shifts the entire pathway closer to thermodynamic equilibrium, which has been predicted to limit product titers. Here, in this study, we replace the PP i -PFK reaction with an ATP-PFK reaction. We demonstrate that the local changes are consistent with thermodynamic predictions: the ratio of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate to fructose-6-phosphate increases, and the reverse flux through the reaction (determined by 13 C labeling) decreases. The final titer and distribution of fermentation products, however, do not change, demonstrating that the thermodynamic constraints of the PP i -PFK reaction are not the sole factor limiting product titer.

Iterated Gauss-Seidel GMRES

The GMRES algorithm of Saad and Schultz [SIAM J. Sci. Stat. Comput., 7 (1986), pp. 856-869] is an iterative method for approximately solving linear systems Ax = b, with initial guess x0 and residual r0 = b Ax0. The algorithm employs the Arnoldi process to generate the Krylov basis vectors (the columns of Vk ). It is well known that this process can be viewed as a QR factorization of the matrix Bk = [r0, AVk] at each iteration. Despite an O (..epsilon..)..kappa.. (Bk ) loss of orthogonality, for unit roundoff ..epsilon..and condition number ..kappa.. , the modified Gram-Schmidt formulation was shown to be backward stable in the seminal paper by Paige et al. [SIAM J. Matrix Anal.Appl., 28 (2006), pp. 264-284]. We present an iterated Gauss-Seidel formulation of the GMRES algorithm (IGS-GMRES) based on the ideas of Ruhe [Linear Algebra Appl., 52 (1983), pp. 591-601] and Swirydowicz et al. [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 28 (2020), pp. 1-20]. IGS-GMRES maintains orthogonality to the level O (..epsilon..)..kappa.. (Bk ) or O (..epsilon..), depending on the choice of one or two iterations; for two Gauss-Seidel iterations, the computed Krylov basis vectors remain orthogonal to working accuracy and the smallest singular value of Vk remains close to one. The resulting GMRES method is thus backward stable. We show that IGS-GMRES can be implemented with only a single synchronization point per iteration, making it relevant to large-scale parallel computing environments. We also demonstrate that, unlike MGS-GMRES, in IGS-GMRES the relative Arnoldi residual corresponding to the computed approximate solution no longer stagnates above machine precision even for highly nonnormal systems.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor of $b$-jets in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of b-jet production in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement uses 260 pb –1 of pp collisions collected in 2017 and 1.4 nb –1 of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018. In both collision systems, jets are reconstructed via the anti-$k_t$ algorithm. The b-jets are identified from a sample of jets containing muons from the semileptonic decay of b-quarks using template fits of the muon momentum relative to the jet axis. In pp collisions, b-jets are reconstructed for radius parameters R = 0.2 and R = 0.4, and only R = 0.2 jets are used in Pb+Pb collisions. For comparison, inclusive R = 0.2 jets are also measured using 1.7 nb –1 of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018 and the same pp collision data as the b-jet measurement. The nuclear modification factor, $R_{AA}$, is calculated for both b-jets and inclusive jets with R = 0.2 over the transverse momentum range of 80–290 GeV. The nuclear modification factor for b-jets decreases from peripheral to central collisions. The ratio of the b-jet $R_{AA}$ to inclusive jet $R_{AA}$ is also presented and suggests that the $R_{AA}$ for b-jets is larger than that for inclusive jets in central Pb+Pb collisions. The measurements are compared with theoretical calculations and suggest a role for mass and colour-charge effects in partonic energy loss in heavy-ion collisions.

A search for new physics in central exclusive production using the missing mass technique with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer

A generic search is presented for the associated production of a Z boson or a photon with an additional unspecified massive particle X, pp → pp + Z/γ + X, in proton-tagged events from proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded in 2017 with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. The missing mass spectrum is analysed in the 600–1600 GeV range and a fit is performed to search for possible deviations from the background expectation. No significant excess in data with respect to the background predictions has been observed. Model-independent upper limits on the visible pro duction cross section of pp → pp + Z/γ + X are set

Projecting Future Energy Production from Operating Wind Farms in North America. Part I: Dynamical Downscaling

Abstract New simulations at 12-km grid spacing with the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) Model nested in the MPI Earth System Model (ESM) are used to quantify possible changes in wind power generation potential as a result of global warming. Annual capacity factors (CF; measures of electrical power production) computed by applying a power curve to hourly wind speeds at wind turbine hub height from this simulation are also used to illustrate the pitfalls in seeking to infer changes in wind power generation directly from low-spatial-resolution and time-averaged ESM output. WRF-derived CF are evaluated using observed daily CF from operating wind farms. The spatial correlation coefficient between modeled and observed mean CF is 0.65, and the root-mean-square error is 5.4 percentage points. Output from the MPI-WRF Model chain also captures some of the seasonal variability and the probability distribution of daily CF at operating wind farms. Projections of mean annual CF (CF A ) indicate no change to 2050 in the southern Great Plains and Northeast. Interannual variability of CF A increases in the Midwest, and CF A declines by up to 2 percentage points in the northern Great Plains. The probability of wind droughts (extended periods with anomalously low production) and wind bonus periods (high production) remains unchanged over most of the eastern United States. The probability of wind bonus periods exhibits some evidence of higher values over the Midwest in the 2040s, whereas the converse is true over the northern Great Plains. Significance Statement Wind energy is playing an increasingly important role in low-carbon-emission electricity generation. It is a “weather dependent” renewable energy source, and thus changes in the global atmosphere may cause changes in regional wind power production (PP) potential. We use PP data from operating wind farms to demonstrate that regional simulations exhibit skill in capturing actual power production. Projections to the middle of this century indicate that over most of North America east of the Rocky Mountains annual expected PP is largely unchanged, as is the probability of extended periods of anomalously high or low production. Any small declines in annual PP are of much smaller magnitude than changes due to technological innovation over the last two decades.

On the 3D printing of polypropylene and post-processing optimization of thermomechanical properties

Polypropylene (PP) is a highly desirable polyolefin in various plastic industries due to its outstanding thermomechanical properties and chemical resistance. Therefore, the 3D printing of PP is an interesting avenue to explore in digitized manufacturing, where more freedom in structural designs is available for new and extended applications, such as high-performance engineering parts. Here, in this work, we 3D printed PP and studied the effect of printing parameters and post-processing conditions on the printed polymer’s thermomechanical behavior. Results showed that nozzle and bed temperatures of 220 and 100°C produced a high printing quality. Infill percentages between 80 and 90%, coupled with a 4-h annealing at 110ºC, also resulted in optimal printed properties. It is thought that PP can be potentially blended with polyethylene or other vinyl polymers for a more extended 3D printing utility and practical applications in rapid tooling and prototyping.

Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE) of Plastics: Recycling and Remolding

Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are often disposed as mixed plastic wastes. The challenges in recycling and upcycling these mixed polyolefin wastes lie in the difficulty in separating individual constituents in a cost-effective and scalable manner. Direct recycling the mixed PE and PP wastes in conventional melt-phase extruders typically result in a product with poor properties and low added value, because of immiscibility, phase separation, and lack of crystallinity. Friction extrusion (FE), a solid phase processing technique that has successfully extruded metal matrix composites with desired end products, has never been utilized to address the issue of recycling mixed plastic wastes. In this study, FE was performed on single-stream low-density polyethylene (LDPE), single-stream PP and mixed-stream LDPE+PP. Consolidated filaments of 2.5 mm diameter were extruded from different precursors. The thermal, infrared, and microscopic properties of extruded filaments were measured to evaluate the effects of FE process on the structure of recycled polymers. Meanwhile, the energy efficiency of FE was estimated based on extrusion rates and compared with conventional melt extrusion processes.

Recycled Glass Polypropylene Composites from Transportation Manufacturing Waste

In recent years there has been growing interest in developing recycling technologies for composites manufacturing scrap, process waste and end-of-life parts. The focus of this work was to establish processing routes and mechanical property bounds for glass-polypropylene (PP-GF) scrap from the production of parts for truck trailers, automobiles, and rail cars. This study considered PP-GF scrap and demonstrated extrusion-compression molding (ECM) as a viable route for the closed-loop manufacture of composite parts. The results were promising in terms of the strength and modulus retention of the PP-GF recyclate. The tensile strength and modulus was the highest for 50% and 66% recycled content, compared with 100% and 83% recycle content. The flexural strength and modulus of the 100% and 83% recycled compositions was higher than the 66% and 50% recycled content, respectively. The impact energy absorption of the PP-GF recyclate at at all fiber loadings was superior in absorbing energy compared with the incumbent (benchmark) plywood. This work is useful to designers seeking to incorporate recycled materials in their products.

A parameterization of sub-grid topographical effects on solar radiation in the E3SM Land Model (version 1.0): implementation and evaluation over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract. Topography exerts significant influences on the incoming solar radiation at the land surface. A few stand-alone regional and global atmospheric models have included parameterizations for sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. However, nearly all Earth system models (ESMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) use a plane-parallel (PP) radiative transfer scheme that assumes that the terrain is flat. In this study, we incorporated a well-validated sub-grid topographic (TOP) parameterization in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM) version 1.0 to quantify the effects of sub-grid topography on solar radiation flux, including the shadow effects and multi-scattering between adjacent terrain. We studied the role of sub-grid topography by performing ELM simulations with the PP and TOP schemes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Additional ELM simulations were performed at multiple spatial resolutions to investigate the role of spatial scale on sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data was used to compare with the ELM simulations. The results show that topography has non-negligible effects on surface energy budget, snow cover, snow depth, and surface temperature over the TP. The absolute differences in surface energy fluxes for net solar radiation, latent heat flux, and sensible heat flux between TOP and PP exceed 20, 10, and 5 W m−2, respectively. The differences in land surface albedo, snow cover fraction, snow depth, and surface temperature between TOP and PP exceed 0.1, 0.1, 10 cm, and 1 K, respectively. The magnitude of the sub-grid topographic effects is dependent on seasons and elevations and is also sensitive to the spatial scales. Although the sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation are larger with more spatial details at finer spatial scales, they cannot be simply neglected at coarse spatial scales. When compared to MODIS data, incorporating the sub-grid topographic effects overall reduces the biases of ELM in simulating surface energy balance, snow cover, and surface temperature, especially in the high-elevation and snow-covered regions over the TP. The inclusion of sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation parameterization in ELM will contribute to advancing our understanding of the role of the surface topography on terrestrial processes over complex terrain.
