Notes on the transonic indicial method

The indicial method for calculating flutter derivatives for two-dimensional airfoils at transonic speeds is discussed, with particular attention given to the effect of a moving shock on the flow variables in the indicial method. An expression for the pressure coefficient is developed on the basis of an explicit treatment of the shock motion; the pressure distribution may then be calculated for general oscillations through use of the indicial method. Explicit inclusion of the shock motion is not necessary if only the lift and pitching moment coefficients are desired.

Origin of the Station 7 boulder - A note

The origin of the matrix types from the Apollo 17 Station 7 boulder is considered along with the origin of boulder material from Station 2, Boulder 1, and 73215. It is pointed out that the formation of the matrix rocks in this boulder and in the other Apollo 17 boulders in a single impact event is consistent with the isotopic evidence, ages, major-element chemistry, large ion lithophile (LIL) trace-element abundances, and textures. It had been suggested by Winzer et al. (1974), based on calculations from crystal-liquid partition coefficients for LIL trace elements, that target rocks corresponding in trace-element composition to the matrix types could have been produced by partial fusion of rocks similar to 77215. Using the same type of calculation, liquids quite similar in trace-element composition to the Station 7 boulder matrix types can be produced.

A note on the averaging method

A simple problem of a two-body system perturbed by the disturbing function epsilon/r-squared is considered to show that the time-averaged equations of the true and mean anomaly are not necessarily equal. Secular effects due to perturbations in the mean and true anomalies are different not only in value but also in sign. A more general case where the disturbing function is periodic with respect to the mean anomaly is also considered. Here a discrepancy in the time-averaged solutions is due to the fact that the mean anomaly is an action-angle variable conjugate to the action variable L, while the true anomaly is not. When the action-angle variables are chosen as dependent variables, the Hamiltonian is a function only of action variables. One must first derive first-order solutions, substitute them into the right-hand side of the equations of motion, and then take time averages.

Notes on the meteorology of the intertropical convergence zone during the July 1977 experiment

The stratosphere and troposphere are large-scale open systems which exchange mass and trace constituents. If averaged over all longitudes, mass exchange can be expressed as products of the means and the mean of the product of the deviations from the mean. At high latitudes, the mass exchange is dominated by the deviations from the mean. At low latitudes, in the tropics, it is generally assumed that the mass exchange is caused by the mean motion. Figures are presented which depict: Northern Hemisphere mean motion; Convergence Zone motion; clouds and their motions; surface pressure variations; and meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, and ozone mixing ratios.

Note on the practical significance of the Drazin inverse

The solution of the differential system Bx = Ax + f where A and B are n x n matrices, and A - Lambda B is not a singular pencil, may be expressed in terms of the Drazin inverse. It is shown that there is a simple reduced form for the pencil A - Lambda B which is adequate for the determination of the general solution and that although the Drazin inverse could be determined efficiently from this reduced form it is inadvisable to do so.

A note on obtaining an approximate value for the period of a periodic solution of x-double prime = -V prime /x/

The first integral of x-double prime = - V prime (x) yields an integral for the period of a periodic solution, if such exists. In general, this integral cannot be evaluated. By means of an approximate solution along with the minimization of a mean-square error, one can obtain an approximate value for the period in terms of the amplitude of the motion. The calculated period agrees very well with the period obtained by means of numerical integration for the case of orbit-orbit resonance involving the motion of two satellites of a planet. The same method is applied to obtain an alternative derivation of the first Krylov-Bogoliuboff averaging method in nonlinear mechanics.

A note on photocurrents in extrinsic semiconductors

The advent of the concept of holes and careful determination of mobilities have made it possible to realize that the potential difference between the contacts of an irradiated semiconductor in the absence of current flow is due to the difference in mobility of electrons and holes. In this paper, a preliminary analysis shows that charge neutrality and zero-current condition are compatible. This situation is clarified and it is found that the equation for the electric field E in the absence of current is not absolutely correct even under low-level injection conditions. In particular, it is shown that fairly large currents can be generated by suitable light sources, currents which are entirely due to the disparity between electron and hole mobilities.

A note on the interaction of unsteady flow with an acoustic liner

The effects of a mean grazing flow on the energy exchanges involved in the interaction of a bias-flow acoustic liner with, respectively, incident sound and boundary layer turbulence are contrasted. The analysis of model problems which make use of a line vortex to simulate large scale, unsteady boundary layer structures indicates that, whereas acoustic waves may be effectively attenuated, dissipation caused by 'jetting' in the apertures of the liner can result in a net transfer of energy from the mean flow to the turbulence in the boundary layer.

A note on a corrector formula for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations

A new corrector formula for predictor-corrector methods for numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations is presented. Two considerations for choosing corrector formulas are given: (1) the coefficient in the error term and (2) its stability properties. The graph of the roots of an equation plotted against its stability region, of different values, is presented along with the tables that correspond to various corrector equations, including Hamming's and Milne and Reynolds'.

A note on the revised galactic neutron spectrum of the Ames collaborative study

Energy distributions of the neutron dose equivalents in the 0.1 to 300 Mev interval for the Ames and Hess spectra are compared. The Ames spectrum shows no evaporation peak, moves the bulk of the flux away from the region of elastic collision and spreads it more evenly over higher energies. The neutron spectrum in space does not seem to hear out the Ames model. Emulsion findings on all manned missions of the past consistently indicate that evaporation events are a prolific source of neutrons in space.

Morphofunctional correlations in the experimental study of myocardiopathies under the stress of forced restraint. Note 2: The influence of adrenal imbalance

Tests were performed with 70 rats to determine the effects of restraint on the functions and structure of the myocardium under varying conditions of adrenal imbalance. Results showed that in rats with adrenal imbalance, fasting and restraint produced the same biochemical alterations as in the controls. The morphologic alteractions, as well as their electric expression, were more varied and evident in the animals with adrenal imbalance. Persistence of the microscopic and electrocardiographic alterations after 72 hours restraint in the animals subjected to unilateral adrenalectomy suggests chronic evolution of the myocardial lesions. This proves the necessity of intact adrenals for a good adaptability to stress.

Notes on the origin of the Trojan asteroids

The dynamic plausibility of various ideas on the origin of the Trojans is briefly discussed. We take the point of view that the present, tightly bound population has secularly evolved through some mechanism from less to more tightly bound orbit configurations. The mechanisms considered are changes in the Jovian mass or semimajor axis during planetary formation, collisional interactions with external, asteroidal material, and cometary outgassing.
