A completely precious metal–free alkaline fuel cell with enhanced performance using a carbon-coated nickel anode

Significance We present a groundbreaking advance in completely nonprecious hydrogen fuel cell technologies achieving a record power density of 200 mW/cm 2 with Ni@CN x anode and Co−Mn cathode. The 2-nm CN x coating weakens the O-binding energy, which effectively mitigates the undesirable surface oxidation during hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) polarization, leading to a stable fuel cell operation for Ni@CN x over 100 h at 200 mA/cm 2 , superior to a Ni nanoparticle counterpart. Ni@CNx exhibited a dramatically enhanced tolerance to CO relative to Pt/C, enabling the use of hydrogen gas with trace amounts of CO, critical for practical applications. The complete removal of precious metals in fuel cells lowers the catalyst cost to virtually negligible levels and marks a milestone for practical alkaline fuel cells.

Prediction of s ± -Wave Superconductivity Enhanced by Electronic Doping in Trilayer Nickelates La 4 Ni 3 O 10 under Pressure

Motivated by the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in trilayer La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 under pressure, here we comprehensively study this system using ab initio and random-phase approximation techniques. Without electronic interactions, the Ni d 3z 2 –r 2 orbitals show a bonding-antibonding and nonbonding splitting behavior via the O p z orbitals inducing a “trimer” lattice in La 4⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 10 , analogous to the dimers of La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 . The Fermi surface consists of three electron sheets with mixed e g orbitals, and a hole and an electron pocket made up of the d 3⁢z 2 –r 2 orbital, suggesting a Ni two-orbital minimum model. In addition, we find that superconducting pairing is induced in the s ± -wave channel due to partial nesting between the M = (π,π) centered pockets and portions of the Fermi surface centered at the Γ = (0,0) point. With changing electronic density n, the s ± instability remains leading and its pairing strength shows a domelike behavior with a maximum around n = 4.2 ( ~6.7% electron doping). The superconducting instability disappears at the same electronic density as that in the new 1313 stacking La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , correlated with the vanishing of the hole pocket that arises from the trilayer sublattice, suggesting that the high-T c superconductivity of La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 does not originate from a trilayer and monolayer structure. Furthermore, we confirm the experimentally proposed spin state in La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 with an in-plane (π, π) order and antiferromagnetic coupling between the top and bottom Ni layers, and spin zero in the middle layer.

Vacancy-mediated transport and segregation tendencies of solutes in fcc nickel under diffusional creep: A density functional theory study

The Nabarro-Herring (NH) diffusional creep theory postulates the vacancy-mediated transport of atoms under a stress gradient as the creep mechanism under low-stress and high-temperature conditions. In multicomponent alloys, we premise that this stress-assisted flow of vacancies to and from grain boundaries will produce elemental segregation. An observation of such segregation, validated with theoretical predictions, can provide the necessary experimental evidence for the occurrence of NH creep. Theoretical calculations of the segregation tendencies via analyzing the dominant solute diffusion mechanisms and the difference in diffusivities of the elements are therefore essential. To this end, this study applies density functional theory calculations of migration barriers and solute-vacancy binding energies as input to the self-consistent mean-field theory to assess the vacancy-mediated diffusion mechanisms, transport coefficients, and segregation tendencies of Co, Cr, Mo, Re, Ta, and W solutes in face-centered-cubic Ni. We find Co, Re, and W to be slow diffusers at high temperatures and Cr, Mo, and Ta to be fast diffusers. Further analysis shows that the slow diffusers tend to always enrich at vacancy sinks over a wide range of temperatures. In contrast, the fast diffusers show a transition from depletion to enrichment as the temperature lowers. Furthermore, our analysis of the segregation tendencies under tensile hydrostatic strains shows that slow diffusers are largely unaffected by the strain and favor enrichment. On the other hand, the fast diffusers exhibit high sensitivity to strain and their segregation tendency can transition from depletion to enrichment at a given temperature. Finally, the transport coefficients calculated in this work are expected to serve as input to mesoscale microstructure models to provide a more rigorous assessment of solute segregation under NH creep conditions.

Assessing Stability of Transition Metal Nitrides in Aqueous Environments: The Case of Molybdenum, Iron, Vanadium and Nickel Nitride

Analysis of the MoN, Mo 2 N, VN, Fe 2 N, Fe 4 N, Ni 3 N stability in the aqueous media was performed based on the thermodynamic data available in HSC Chemistry software. Our analysis show that among all the studied nitrides, cubic Mo 2 N is the most resistant while cubic VN is the least resistant to oxidation and decomposition. The change in temperature up to 100 °C does not significantly influence the formation potentials of transition metal oxides from nitrides; however, pH significantly affects the stability of the studied transition metal nitrides. In the case of Mo 2 N, MoN, and VN changing pH from acidic to neutral and alkaline decreases the stability of the nitrides and the oxide formation potentials shift to more negative values. Additionally, based on thermodynamics, orthorhombic Fe 2 N should be stable only in alkaline conditions, while cubic Fe 4 N and hexagonal Ni 3 N should be the most stable at pH ~ 7 and pH ~ 9. Changing pH from these values decreases the stability of both Fe 4 N and Ni 3 N and the formation of oxy-, hydroxy- species becomes thermodynamically more favorable. Overall, the limited stability of the metal nitrides places severe constraints for their use in aqueous electrocatalytic applications.

Photonic Curing of Nickel Oxide Transport Layer and Perovskite Active Layer for Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells: A Path Towards High-Throughput Manufacturing

High-throughput roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is currently limited by thermal processes that take tens of minutes each, translating to impractically long annealing tools at high web speeds. In addition, PSCs are usually made with metal oxide transport layer materials that require high temperatures for thermal annealing. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of PSCs using photonic curing, instead of thermal annealing, to convert NiO x directly from sol-gel precursors for hole transport layers and to crystallize methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) active layers on flexible Willow ® Glass substrates. Photonic curing uses short, intense pulses of light to process materials at a high speed, hence it is compatible with R2R manufacturing. We achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.7% in forward-scan and 10.9% in reverse-scan for PSCs made with photonic cured NiO x and MAPbI 3 films. Furthermore, both NiO x and MAPbI 3 films could be processed with a single photonic curing pulse, with a web speed of 5.7 m/min, and still produce PCEs comparable to thermally annealed control samples. Based on the single-pulse photonic curing condition for each film, we project a web speed of 26 m/min, laying a pathway to high-throughput production of perovskite solar modules.

Electron Redistributed S-Doped Nickel Iron Phosphides Derived from One-Step Phosphatization of MOFs for Significantly Boosting Electrochemical Water Splitting

Nonprecious transition metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising precursors for developing electrocatalysts with high porosity and structural rigidity. This study reports the synthesis of high efficiency electrocatalysts based on S-doped NiFeP. MOF-derived S-doped NiFeP structure is synthesized by a one-step phosphorization process with using S-doped MOFs as the precursor, which is more convenient and environment friendly, and also helps retain the samples’ framework. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the NiFeP catalysts can be improved after partially replacing P by S due to the tunable electronic structure. The optimized CCS-NiFeP-10 reaches a current density of 10 mA cm –2 for OER with an overpotential of 201 mV and outperforms most NiFe-based catalysts. The S doping plays an important role in tuning the ΔG values for intermediates formation in Ni atoms to a suitable value and exhibits a pronouncedly improved the OER performance. CCS-NiFeP-20 sample presents excellent HER performance due to the d-band center downshifting from the Fermi level. When the voltage of the electrolytic cell is 1.50 V, a current density of 10 mA cm –2 can be obtained. This strategy paves the way for designing highly active none-noble metal catalysts.

Powder‐to‐Film Conversion of Nickel Single‐Atom Catalysts into Binder‐Free and Resistant Electrodes

Although a few binder-free and self-supported single-atom electrodes have been reported, achieving mechanically robust, defect-engineered, and reproducible films that preserve atomic dispersion under electrochemical operation remains challenging. This work addresses this limitation by presenting a versatile and generalizable strategy to transform powders into standalone, defect-engineered thin films hosting atomically dispersed Ni centers within conductive 2D frameworks. The physicochemical and electronic properties of these materials are thoroughly characterized using a comprehensive set of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques and confirmed the homogeneous dispersion and monoatomic nature of the Ni centers (0.94 wt.%) on the electrode films. Electrochemical testing via cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under a range of experimental conditions revealed that integration of Ni single atoms markedly enhanced performance and stability compared to carbon nanotube-only electrodes, maintaining integrity after 15 h of continuous operation. This improvement is accompanied by a notable reduction in charge transfer resistance (30.50 Ω) and an increase in double-layer capacitance (295.45 µF). Post-electrochemical analyses corroborated the structural integrity and robustness of the electrodes. Overall, this work bridges atomically precise catalysis and device-level electrochemistry, opening a route toward reproducible and scalable single-atom electrodes for sensing and energy conversion.

The Importance of Surface Oxygen for Lithiation and Morphology Evolution during Calcination of High-Nickel NMC Cathodes

Nanoscale morphology has a direct impact on the performance of materials for electrochemical energy storage. Despite this importance, little is known about the evolution of primary particle morphology nor its effect on chemical pathways during synthesis. In this work, operando characterization is combined with atomic-scale and continuum simulations to clarify the relationship between morphology of cathode primary particles and their lithiation during calcination of LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC-811). This combined approach reveals a key role for surface oxygen adsorption in facilitating the lithiation reaction by promoting metal diffusion and oxidation, and simultaneously providing surface sites for lithium insertion. Furthermore, oxygen surface termination is shown to increase the activation energy for sintering, leading to smaller primary particle sizes at intermediate temperatures. Smaller particles provide both shorter diffusion lengths for lithium incorporation and increased surface site density for lithium insertion. These insights provide a foundation for more tailored syntheses of cathode materials with optimized performance characteristics.

All-Electric Nonassociative Learning in Nickel Oxide

Habituation and sensitization represent nonassociative learning mechanisms in both non-neural and neural organisms. They are essential for a range of functions from survival to adaptation in dynamic environments. Design of hardware for neuroinspired computing strives to emulate such features driven by electric bias and can also be incorporated into neural network algorithms. Herein, cellular-like learning in oxygen-deficient NiO x devices is demonstrated. Both habituation learning and sensitization response can be achieved in a single device by simply controlling the magnitude of the electric field. Spontaneous memory relaxations and dynamic redistribution of oxygen vacancies under electric bias enable such learning behavior of NiO x under sequential training. These characteristics in simple device arrays are implemented to learn alphabets as well as demonstrate simulated algorithmic use cases in digit recognition. Transition metal oxides with carefully prepared defect concentrations can be highly sensitive to electronic structure perturbations under moderate electrical stimulus and serve as building blocks for next-generation neuroinspired computing hardware.

The Critical Role of Reductive Steps in the Nickel-Catalyzed Hydrogenolysis and Hydrolysis of Aryl Ether C-O Bonds

Hydrogenolysis of the aromatic C-O bond in aryl ethers is catalyzed by Ni in decalin or water at 150 °C. Observations of a significant kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 5.7) for the reactions of diphenyl ether under H2 and D2 and a positive dependence of the rate on H2 chemical potential in decalin indicate that addition of H to the aromatic ring is the rate-limiting step rather than C-O scission. Hydrogen addition occurs on the metal before C-O bond scission. DFT calculations indicate that hydrogen atom addition to the ortho position followed by C-O scission is energetically more feasible than C-O scission followed by H addition to either phenoxyl or phenyl moieties. Hydrogenolysis initiated via H addition in water is more selective (~75 %) compared to reactions in decalin (~30 %). The high selectivity for hydrogenolysis is attributed to stabilization of polar transition state by water as a polar solvent.

Nickel(II) Bisporphyrin‐Fused Pentacenes Exhibiting Abnormal High Stability

Abstract A series of largely π‐extended multichromophoric molecules including cross‐conjugated, half cross‐conjugated, conjugation‐interrupted and linearly conjugated systems were synthesized and characterized. These multichromophoric molecular systems revealed interesting structural‐property relationships. Bisporphyrin‐fused pentacenes Pen‐1 b and Pen‐2 a showed rich redox chemistry with 7 and 8 observable redox states, respectively. The linearly‐conjugated bisporphyrin‐fused pentacenes ( Pen‐1 b and Pen‐2 a ) possess much narrower HOMO–LUMO gaps (1.65 and 1.42 eV redox, respectively) and higher HOMO energy levels than those of their pentacene analogues (2.23 and 2.01 eV redox, respectively), similar to those of much less stable hexacenes and heptacenes. An estimated half‐life of >945 h was obtained for bisporphyrin‐fused pentacene Pen‐2 a , which is much longer than that of its pentacene analogue ( BPE‐P , half‐life, 33 h).

Direct Observation of Defect‐Aided Structural Evolution in a Nickel‐Rich Layered Cathode

Abstract Ni‐rich LiNi 1− x − y Mn x Co y O 2 (NMC) layered compounds are the dominant cathode for lithium ion batteries. The role of crystallographic defects on structure evolution and performance degradation during electrochemical cycling is not yet fully understood. Here, we investigated the structural evolution of a Ni‐rich NMC cathode in a solid‐state cell by in situ transmission electron microscopy. Antiphase boundary (APB) and twin boundary (TB) separating layered phases played an important role on phase change. Upon Li depletion, the APB extended across the layered structure, while Li/transition metal (TM) ion mixing in the layered phases was detected to induce the rock‐salt phase formation along the coherent TB. According to DFT calculations, Li/TM mixing and phase transition were aided by the low diffusion barriers of TM ions at planar defects. This work reveals the dynamical scenario of secondary phase evolution, helping unveil the origin of performance fading in Ni‐rich NMC.

Gel‐Derived Amorphous Bismuth–Nickel Alloy Promotes Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via Optimizing Nitrogen Adsorption and Activation

Abstract To achieve the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for efficient and sustainable NH 3 production, catalysts should exhibit high selectivity and activity with optimal adsorption energy. Herein we developed a three‐dimensional (3D) amorphous BiNi alloy toward a significantly enhanced NRR compared with its crystalline and metal counterparts. Ni alloying enables the chemisorption of nitrogen and the lower free‐energy change for the *NNH formation, and the 3D alloy electrocatalyst exhibits high catalytic activity for NH 3 production with a yield rate of 17.5 μg h −1 mg cat −1 and Faradaic efficiency of 13.8 %. The enhanced electron transfer and increased electrochemical surface area were revealed in the interconnected porous scaffold, affording it sufficiently efficient and stable activity for potential practical applications. This work offers new insights into optimizing the adsorption energy of reactants and intermediates combined with tuning the crystallinity of NRR electrocatalysts.

Lewis Acid Supported Nickel Nitrenoids

Abstract Metalation of the polynucleating ligand F,tbs LH 6 (1,3,5‐C 6 H 9 (NC 6 H 3 −4‐F−2‐NSiMe 2 t Bu) 3 ) with two equivalents of Zn(N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) 2 affords the dinuclear product ( F,tbs LH 2 )Zn 2 ( 1 ), which can be further deprotonated to yield ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Li 2 (OEt 2 ) 4 ( 2 ). Transmetalation of 2 with NiCl 2 (py) 2 yields the heterometallic, trinuclear cluster ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(py) ( 3 ). Reduction of 3 with KC 8 affords [KC 222 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni] ( 4 ) which features a monovalent Ni centre. Addition of 1‐adamantyl azide to 4 generates the bridging μ 3 ‐nitrenoid adduct [K(THF) 3 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 ‐NAd)] ( 5 ). EPR spectroscopy reveals that the anionic cluster possesses a doublet ground state ( S = ). Cyclic voltammetry of 5 reveals two fully reversible redox events. The dianionic nitrenoid [K 2 (THF) 9 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 ‐NAd)] ( 6 ) was isolated and characterized while the neutral redox isomer was observed to undergo both intra‐ and intermolecular H‐atom abstraction processes. Ni K‐edge XAS studies suggest a divalent oxidation state for the Ni centres in both the monoanionic and dianionic [Zn 2 Ni] nitrenoid complexes. However, DFT analysis suggests Ni‐borne oxidation for 5 .
