SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.58

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Risk-Adaptive Experimental Design for High-Consequence Systems: LDRD Final Report

Constructing accurate statistical models of critical system responses typically requires an enormous amount of data from physical experiments or numerical simulations. Unfortunately, data generation is often expensive and time consuming. To streamline the data generation process, optimal experimental design determines the 'best' allocation of experiments with respect to a criterion that measures the ability to estimate some important aspect of an assumed statistical model. While optimal design has a vast literature, few researchers have developed design paradigms targeting tail statistics, such as quantiles. In this project, we tailored and extended traditional design paradigms to target distribution tails. Our approach included (i) the development of new optimality criteria to shape the distribution of prediction variances, (ii) the development of novel risk-adapted surrogate models that provably overestimate certain statistics including the probability of exceeding a threshold, and (iii) the asymptotic analysis of regression approaches that target tail statistics such as superquantile regression. To accompany our theoretical contributions, we released implementations of our methods for surrogate modeling and design of experiments in two complementary open source software packages, the ROL/OED Toolkit and PyApprox.

PHASM: A Toolkit for Creating AI Surrogate Models within Legacy Codebases

PHASM (“Parallel Hardware viA Surrogate Models”) is a software toolkit for creating AI-based surrogate models of scientific code. AI-based surrogate models are widely used for creating fast and inverse simulations. PHASM anticipates an additional future use case: adapting legacy code to modern hardware. While data centers are investing in heterogeneous hardware such as GPUs and FPGAs, many established scientific codebases remain unable to take advantage of the hardware’s higher parallelism without undergoing a costly rewrite. An alternative is to train a AI-based surrogate model to mimic computationally intensive functions in the code, and run the surrogate instead. PHASM formalizes a development lifecycle for such surrogate models, including discovering functions amenable to replacement with a surrogate model, predicting the resulting performance, identifying the function’s space of inputs and outputs, binding the model to the code, and managing model versions. A suite of software tools for facilitating these steps was written and validated against a set of model problems.

Training Efforts in the Exascale Computing Project

This article delineates the training activities carried out under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Exascale Computing Project (ECP). While some of these activities are specific to members of ECP, others can be beneficial to the community at large. Additionally, we report on training opportunities and resources that the broad Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E) community can tap into; we seek to increase awareness about these resources, which we expect to go beyond ECP’s scope and life cycle.

Generating MCNP Input Files for Unstructured Mesh Geometries

Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) transport code version 6 has the capability for tracking particles on unstructured mesh (UM) geometry models. The MCNP UM feature has been developed for performing calculations of complex geometry models. This capability tracks particles on hybrid geometries where finite element meshes are embedded into constructive solid geometry (CSG) cells. The MCNP UM feature was originally designed to read UM models created by Abaqus/CAE software suite. MCNP versions 6.2.0 and later can process UM models read from Abaqus input les or MCNPUM les converted from Abaqus input les. Sandia National Laboratory's Cubit Toolkit and other finite element analysis software packages may generate UM models and then convert these models into Abaqus input formats.

Modeling a ring magnet in ALEGRA

We show here that Sandia's ALEGRA software can be used to model a permanent magnet in 2D and 3D, with accuracy matching that of the open-source commercial software FEMM. This is done by conducting simulations and experimental measurements for a commercial-grade N42 neodymium alloy ring magnet with a measured magnetic field strength of approximately 0.4 T in its immediate vicinity. Transient simulations using ALEGRA and static simulations using FEMM are conducted. Comparisons are made between simulations and measurements, and amongst the simulations, for sample locations in the steady-state magnetic field. The comparisons show that all models capture the data to within 7%. The FEMM and ALEGRA results agree to within approximately 2%. The most accurate solutions in ALEGRA are obtained using quadrilateral or hexahedral elements. In the case where iron shielding disks are included in the magnetized space, ALEGRA simulations are considerably more expensive because of the increased magnetic diffusion time, but FEMM and ALEGRA results are still in agreement. The magnetic field data are portable to other software interfaces using the Exodus file format.
