Constant frequency pulsed phase-locked-loop instrument for measurement of ultrasonic velocity

A new instrument based on a constant-frequency pulsed phase-locked-loop (CFPPLL) concept has been developed to accurately measure the ultrasonic wave velocity in liquids and changes in ultrasonic wave velocity in solids and liquids. An analysis of the system shows that it is immune to many of the frequency-dependent effects that plague other techniques. Measurements of the sound velocity in ultrapure water are used to confirm the analysis. The results are in excellent agreement with values from the literature, and establish that the CFPPLL provides a reliable, accurate way to measure velocities, as well as for monitoring small changes in velocity without the sensitivity to frequency-dependent phase shifts common to other measurement systems. The estimated sensitivity to phase changes is better than a few parts in 10 to the 7th.

Magnetically Operated Holding Plate And Ball-Lock Pin

Magnetically operated holding plate and ball-locking-pin mechanism part of object attached to, or detached from second object. Mechanism includes tubular housing inserted in hole in second object. Plunger moves inside tube forcing balls to protrude from sides. Balls prevent tube from sliding out of second object. Simpler, less expensive than motorized latches; suitable for robotics applications.

Self-Aligning, Spline-Locking Fastener

Self-aligning, spline-locking fastener is two-part mechanism operated by robot, using one tool and simple movements. Spline nut on springloaded screw passes through mating spline fitting. Operator turns screw until vertical driving surfaces on spline nut rest against corresponding surfaces of spline fitting. Nut rides upward, drawing pieces together. Used to join two parts of structure, to couple vehicles, or to mount payload in vehicle.

Spline-Locking Screw Fastening Strategy (SLSFS)

A fastener was developed by NASA Goddard for efficiently performing assembly, maintenance, and equipment replacement functions in space using either robotic or astronaut means. This fastener, the 'Spline Locking Screw' (SLS) would also have significant commercial value in advanced manufacturing. Commercial (or DoD) products could be manufactured in such a way that their prime subassemblies would be assembled using SLS fasteners. This would permit machines and robots to disconnect and replace these modules/parts with ease, greatly reducing life cycle costs of the products and greatly enhancing the quality, timeliness, and consistency of repairs, upgrades, and remanufacturing. The operation of the basic SLS fastener is detailed, including hardware and test results. Its extension into a comprehensive fastening strategy for NASA use in space is also outlined. Following this, the discussion turns toward potential commercial and government applications and the potential market significance of same.

Phase stability of injection-locked beam of semiconductor lasers

An experiment on the phase stability of an injection locked beam was done by using AlGaAs semiconductor lasers. The coherence of two beams from master and slave lasers was measured by interference between the beams in the Twymann-Green interferometer. The phase change of the output beam of the slave laser as a function of the driving current was measured in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisting of the master and slave lasers, and a value of 2.5 radians/mA was obtained.

A theoretical and experimental study of the noise behavior of subharmonically injection locked local oscillators

A method for the noise characterization of optically controlled subharmonically injection-locked oscillators is presented. Based on a nonlinear model of synchronized oscillators, this method is used to formulate a general expression for phase noise calculation, so that FM noise degradation of a subharmonically synchronized LO at large-signal levels can be predicted easily and accurately. Experimental results of FM noise measurement of an oscillator confirmed the accuracy of the analysis.

Constant-Frequency Pulsed Phase-Locked-Loop Measuring Device

Constant-frequency pulsed phase-locked-loop measuring device is sensitive to small changes in phase velocity and easily automated. Based on use of fixed-frequency oscillator in measuring small changes in ultrasonic phase velocity when sample exposed to such changes in environment as changes in pressure and temperature. Automatically balances electrical phase shifts against acoustical phase shifts to obtain accurate measurements of acoustical phase shifts.

Application of multirate digital filter banks to wideband all-digital phase-locked loops design

A new class of architecture for all-digital phase-locked loops (DPLL's) is presented in this article. These architectures, referred to as parallel DPLL (PDPLL), employ multirate digital filter banks (DFB's) to track signals with a lower processing rate than the Nyquist rate, without reducing the input (Nyquist) bandwidth. The PDPLL basically trades complexity for hardware-processing speed by introducing parallel processing in the receiver. It is demonstrated here that the DPLL performance is identical to that of a PDPLL for both steady-state and transient behavior. A test signal with a time-varying Doppler characteristic is used to compare the performance of both the DPLL and the PDPLL.

Variable frequency pulsed phase-locked loop method for measuring material nonlinearity

The design of a pressure vessel with an isothermal volume to measure changes in the natural velocities of material continuously over a wide temperature range is reported. Highly sensitive pulsed phase-locked loop technology is used to measure the natural velocity of fatigued aluminum 2024-T4 as a function of pressure at different temperatures. Second derivative variations with respect to pressure and temperature are found to exhibit order-of-magnitude changes at a gauge pressure near 950 kPa at room temperature. This indicates a significant change in certain combinations of second-order and higher-order elastic constants at relatively low pressures. Fractional frequency change as a function of applied pressure for aluminum 2024-T4 with fatigue damage is illustrated.

Vibrational predissociation of methylnitrite using phase-locked ultrashort laser pulses

We solve numerically the time-dependent Schroedinger equation to study the behavior of a molecule interacting with two phase-locked ultrashort laser pulses. The 2D model used in the calculations mimics the properties of the CH3ONO molecule. The two pulses are identical except for their relative phase and are tuned to excite an upper electronic state of the molecule. After excitation the molecule predissociates, and we calculate the dependence of the NO yield and of the NO vibrational population on the delay time between the pulses.

On the effects of phase jitter on QPSK lock detection

The performance of a QPSK (quadrature phase-shift keying) lock detector is described, taking into account the degradation due to carrier phase jitter. Such an analysis is necessary for accurate performance prediction purposes in scenarios where both the loop SNR is low and the estimation period is short. The derived formulas are applicable to several QPSK loops and are verified using computer simulations.

Simultaneous compression of the passively mode-locked pulsewidth and pulse train

Simultaneous compression of the passively mode-locked pulse width and pulse train have been achieved by using a plano-convex unstable resonator hybrided by a nonlinear Sagnac ring interferometer. The greater than 30 mJ single pulse energy of a lone oscillator and less than or equal to 10 ps pulsewidth have been obtained. Using this system, the LAGEOS and ETALON satellites' laser ranging have been performed successfully.
