Automated life-detection experiments for the Viking mission to Mars

As part of the Viking mission to Mars in 1975, an automated set of instruments is being built to test for the presence of metabolizing organisms on that planet. Three separate modules are combined in this instrument so that samples of the Martian surface can be subjected to a broad array of experimental conditions so as to measure biological activity. The first, the Pyrolytic Release Module, will expose surface samples to a mixture of C-14O and C-14O2 in the presence of Martian atmosphere and a light source that simulates the Martian visible spectrum. The assay system is designed to determine the extent of assimilation of CO or CO2 into organic compounds. The Gas Exchange Module will incubate surface samples in a humidified CO2 atmosphere. At specified times, portions of the incubation atmosphere will be analyzed by gas chromatography to detect the release or uptake of CO2 and several additional gases. The Label Release Module will incubate surface samples with a dilute aqueous solution of simple radioactive organic substrates in Martian atmosphere, and the gas phase will be monitored continuously for the release of labeled CO2.

Investigation of laser dynamics, modulation and control by means of intra-cavity time varying perturbation

The generation of tunable visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light is examined, along with the control of this light by means of novel mode-locking and modulation techniques. Transient mode-locking of the Nd:YAG laser and generation of short tunable pulses in the visible and the alkali metal inert gas excimer laser systems were investigated. Techniques for frequency conversion of high power and high energy laser radiation are discussed, along with high average power blue and UV laser light sources.

O/1 D/ production in ozone photolysis near 3100 A

Relative quantum yields of O(1 D) production in ozone photolysis from 2750 to 3340 A have been determined in the gas phase at -40 C. The O(1 D) was monitored by means of its reaction with isobutane to form isobutyl alcohol. The light source was a high pressure mercury lamp combined with a monochromator, with a bandwidth of 16 A. The results show a constant O(1 D) production below 3000 A, which is taken as unity on the basis of previous work. There is a very sharp fall-off in O(1 D) production which is centered at 3080 A. At 3130 A, O(1 D) production is not greater than 0.1.

Velocity measurement of particles in sprays

The approach described makes use of high-speed photography employing short-duration light sources. Drops are photographed in flight as they pass through a narrow slice of the spray on which the optical system is focussed. Two sparks fired at intervals of a few microseconds give double image photographs of drops. Drop velocity is calculated by measuring the distance between the two images of the drop and the time interval between sparks. Details regarding the optical and photographic system are described along with the design of the electronics system.

Review of Terrestrial Photovoltaic Measurements Workshop

Measurement methods for terrestrial solar cells require calibration standards to set simulator irradiance levels or to monitor solar irradiance in outdoor measurements. Measurements of solar cell performance in terrestrial sunlight are the most acceptable, but an artificial light source can be used for laboratory measurements.

Shift measurements of the stark-broadened ionized helium lines at 1640 and 1215 angstrom

Time-resolved measurements were made of the shifts of the ionized helium lines at 1,640 A (n = 3 approaches 2) and 1,215 A (n = 4 approaches 2), and of the Stark profile of the 1,215 A wavelength line. An electromagnetic shock tube was used as a light source. The plasma conditions corresponded to electron temperatures of approximately 3.5 eV and electron densities of 0.8 to 1.8 x 10 to the 17th power/cubic cm. The measured shifts fell between two previous estimates of plasma polarization shifts. The measured Stark width of the 1,215 A wavelength line was up to 30% greater than the theoretical width.

Photoelectrolytic Production of Hydrogen Using Semiconductor Electrodes

Experimental data for the photoelectrolytic production of hydrogen using GaAs photoanodes was presented. Four types of GaAs anodes were investigated: polished GaAs, GaAs coated with gold, GaAs coated with silver, and GaAs coated with tin. The maximum measured efficiency using a tungsten light source was 8.9 percent for polished GaAs electrodes and 6.3 percent for tin coated GaAs electrodes.

Photosynthesis of organic compounds in the atmosphere of Jupiter

An efficient conversion of CH4 to hydrocarbons and HCN takes place when NH3 is photolysed in the presence of CH4, H2, and He using a 184.9 nm light source. The extent of NH3 decomposition after a 1 hr exposure was determined spectrophotometrically; CH4, N2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons were detected and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Photolysis of one molar equivalent of NH3 results in the loss of 0.84 molar equivalent of CH4, which apparently reacts with hot hydrogen atoms produced by photolysis. The 8% of the NH3 which is not converted to N2 probably is converted to organic amines and nitrile derivatives. The results indicate that NH3 photolysis is a highly probable mechanism for the conversion of methane to more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, and predict the occurrence of HCN, NH2NH2, and higher hydrocarbons in the Jovian atmosphere above the NH3 clouds.

Heterogeneous chemical reactions: Preparation of monodisperse latexes

It is demonstrated that a photoinitiated emulsion polymerization can be carried out to a significant conversion in a SPAR rocket prototype polymerization vessel within the six minutes allowed for the experiment. The percentage of conversion was determined by both dilatometry and gravimetric methods with good agreement. The experimental results lead to the following conclusions: (1) emulsion polymerizations can be carried out to conversions as high as 75%, using a stable micellized styrene-SLS system plus photoinitiator; (2) dilatometry can be used to accurately determine both the rate and conversion of polymerization; (3) thermal expansion due to the light source and heat of reaction is small and can be corrected for if necessary; (4) although seeded emulsion polymerizations are unfavorable in photoinitiation, as opposed to chemical initiation, polymerizations can be carried out to at least 15% conversion using 7940A seed particles, with 0.05% solids; and (5) photoinitiation should be used to initiate polymerization in the SPAR rocket experiments because of the mechanical simplicity of the experiment.

Shock tube measurements of the optical absorption of triatomic carbon, C3

The spectral absorption of C3 has been measured in a shock tube using a test gas mixture of acetylene diluted with argon. The absorption of a pulsed xenon light source was measured by means of eight photomultiplier channels to a spectrograph and an accompanying drum camera. The postshock test gas temperature and pressure were varied over the range 3300-4300 K and 0.36 to 2.13 atmospheres, respectively. The results showed appreciable absorption from C3 for the wavelength range 300 to 540 nanometers. The computed electronic oscillator strength varied from 0.12 to 0.06 as a function of temperature.

Shift and width measurements of the Stark-broadened ionized helium line at 1215 A

Time-resolved photoelectric measurements were made of the shifts of helium plasma lines at 1640 A and 1215 A and of the Stark profile of the 1215 A line, using an electromagnetic shock tube as a light source. These red shifts are consistent with a plasma polarization shift, where the interaction energy between the radiating ion and the perturbing plasma electrons corresponds to the Coulomb interaction near the excited state Bohr radius. No significant shifts were observed for the 1640 A line, while the 1215 A line underwent a red shift of about 0.5 A. The measured Stark width of the 1215 A line was 10-45% greater than the calculated width based on the measured width of the 4686 A line.
