Development of Post-Consumer Textile Waste Degradation Protocol and Related Downstream Transformations: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Tereform, Inc. (Tereform) is developing molecular deconstruction processes to transform waste materials into chemical building blocks. During the CRADA, Tereform deconstructed real-world post-consumer substrates into chemical monomers, validated their performance on laboratory scales, demonstrated feasibility of the degradation products in downstream transformations, and successfully scaled the reaction to kilogram-scale. These results were used to develop and refine technoeconomic analysis and lifecycle assessments to evaluate the economic feasibility and environmental impacts of the process.

BETO 2021 Peer Review - Strategic Analysis Support WBS 4.1.1.30

Strategic Analysis Support. The objective of the NREL strategic support project is to provide sound, unbiased, and consistent analyses to inform the strategic direction of the DOE BETO office. This project addresses key technological questions, provides critical data needed to inform strategy, and highlights barriers, gaps and data needs in support of the DOE BETO's mission to improve the affordability of bio-based fuels and products. This task employs various quantitative (techno-economic analysis, TEA) and qualitative (gap analysis) approaches to allow for direct comparisons of biomass conversion technologies across a wide slate of processing platforms and products. Furthermore, this project develops and utilizes novel analyses beyond traditional biorefinery focused TEA/LCAs to identify both technical (e.g., in sustainable design) and non-technical (e.g., in value proposition) barriers, as well as to outline mitigation strategies and R&D needs for emerging technologies. Additionally, the project is tasked with evaluating drivers that support the growing bio-economy, which is achieved by the development and public release of tools to advance the understanding and facilitate comparisons of socio-economic impacts along the supply chain. Critical to the success of this project is the development of defensible methodologies, analyses, and tools that are publicly available to support stakeholders and bioeconomy growth. To develop such high-quality analyses, the biggest challenge to this project, as with most analysis focused projects, is the availability and reliability of the underlying data. Therefore, the project team works extensively with key stakeholders (e.g., policy makers, bioenergy technology developers, and investors) in developing and reviewing the results of these analyses to overcome this challenge. Any remaining uncertainties associated with the analysis efforts are clearly defined and quantified.

A Scalable Method for Decarbonizing Modular Building Solutions: Preprint

The decarbonization movement emphasizes the shift in focus from energy efficiency to directly reducing global-warming impact. Blokable, LLC, a vertically integrated modular builder with an all-electric portfolio, worked with NREL on a roadmap to decarbonize its high-performance building product at a relative cost advantage by utilizing the learning curves of mass production. Previous decarbonization literature focused on either i) lifecycle assessments, or ii) efficiency measures. These decarbonization exercises were bespoke to individual building projects and did not consider positive feedback loops of builder experience or process repetition. Vertically integrated, prefab builders possess the unique ability to leverage learning and repetition to decarbonize their design-build-operate process. This collaboration between Blokable and NREL resulted in a decarbonization strategy utilizing the company's scaling and production efficiencies, on-site renewable energy and storage, and the projected evolution of building components over time based on trends and emerging legislation. The method developed here encompasses a growing business model, lifecycle carbon assessment, and projected changes in product and grid emissions over time due to existing trends and emerging legislation. This methodology incorporates learning-curve efficiencies gleaned from scaled manufacturing, as well as open-source tools integration for energy and carbon accounting. The output projects and compares cost and carbon savings per modular unit as production increases to 10,000 dwelling units annually over 15 years. The resulting roadmap illustrates a path to roughly 60% carbon savings and beyond-net-zero-energy performance at no incremental cost by 2030. The methodology can be mapped to other integrated or productized builders for methodical decarbonization.

Environmental, Economic, and Scalability Consideration of Selected Biomass-Derived Blendstocks for Mixing-Controlled Compression Ignition (MCCI) Engines

Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines (Co-Optima) explores how simultaneous innovations in fuels and engines can boost fuel economy and vehicle performance while reducing emissions. The Analysis of Sustainability, Scale, Economics, Risk and Trade (ASSERT) team supports Co-Optima goals by evaluating environmental and economic drivers and the potential of bioblendstock candidates. The team assesses potential benefits or drawbacks of deploying co-optimized fuels and engines in the transportation sector. This presentation provides guidance into which Co-Optima bioblendstocks may be most economically and environmentally viable when scaled up.

Economic and Sustainability Assessment on Bio-Based 2,3-BDO Separation Approaches for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plays a critical role in aviation decarbonization. SAF can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass, such as corn stover, via 2,3-butanediol (BDO) intermediate. BDO undergoes downstream upgrading, including dehydration, oligomerization, and hydrotreating, to make the hydrocarbon blend stock like SAF. Separating BDO from a fermentation broth is challenging. Water is more volatile than BDO, so energy consumption for ordinary distillation is prohibitively high. For BDO to be a feasible intermediate for sustainable biofuels such as SAF, the total energy usage for the BDO separation target was set to be no greater than 30% of its lower heating value (LHV). We have developed and explored less energy intensive separation technologies for processing dilute fermentation BDO broth into suitable feed for downstream upgrading. The combined economic and sustainability assessment was performed to assess the feasibility of select cost-effective process designs and comparisons with baseline technology (i.e., cascade vacuum distillation).

Data and Tools for Exploring New Pumped Storage Hydropower Deployment Opportunities

Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a flexible energy storage technology with the potential to facilitate variable renewable energy integration into the decarbonized electric grid of the future. NREL is developing new data and tools to help understand opportunities for new PSH deployment, including nationwide resource assessment data, a bottom-up component-level cost model, and a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions calculator. These datasets lay the foundation for better-informed grid planning decisions about how PSH fits into a future portfolio of generation, transmission, and storage assets.
