Agile Strategy Living Laboratory Reflection Paper

Getting my team members to all agree that we needed to pursue possible solutions for our documentation review process was an idea that came across very well with the team. This specific topic has be something that as a team we have been having struggles with recently due to the shear amount of documents that have been flowing through the team’s hands to review. We all realized that the process had areas that we could change that would eliminate confusion for new employees, reduce backload, and improve efficiency and quality of the documentation reviews. The key personnel on our team that have the most direct control and impact over this process are the production control specialists, documentation preparation and review is their primary job function. They are denoted in the action pack as “doc spec 1” and this individual has 12 years of expertise in their role. The engineers are denoted as “engineer 1, 2, 3” respectively. Engineer 1 has 10 years of experience in this team, engineer 3 has 38 years of experience on the team, and engineer 2 is myself with 5 years of expertise with this team and 5 with the department of defense.

Understanding Your Utility Bills: Natural Gas

As a fossil fuel NG is a colorless and odorless gas in its natural state and is one of the cleanest burning hydrocarbons. The factors that contribute to the popularity of natural gas in the US manufacturing sector include ease of availability, clean burning properties, market deregulation, and increased domestic production. Analyzing natural gas (NG) bills can sometimes pose unique problems. Learning to read your utility bills and understand why your utility charges different fees is critical in maximizing your cost savings through energy efficiency. A key to creating a baseline is collecting and analyzing natural gas utility data. Historical data from NG bills can identify trends and help to find the baseline usage for a manufacturing operation. This guide intends to help Better Plant Program partners in understanding natural gas bills and analyzing usage to reduce costs. The guide focuses on natural gas production and transportation, understanding key charges on bills, different rate structures, and saving opportunities. A fictitious worked out example in the final section demonstrates how readers could go about analyzing natural gas bills.

Chicago Pile-1 paved the way for nuclear science and a lab in Los Alamos First self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was nearly 80 years ago

On a bitter-cold winter day, 43 scientists gathered at an abandoned squash court at the University of Chicago where they would ultimately enable a secret lab in Los Alamos to change the world just years later. It was December 2, 1942. The group, led by Italian physicist and Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi, stacked graphite bricks, piling 57 layers that totaled more than 770,000 pounds. Later named Chicago Pile-1, their goal was to create the world’s first self-sustaining, controlled nuclear chain reaction. Inside the approximately 20-feet-tall pile were smaller blocks of uranium and control rods that, when removed, would cause the reaction to go critical – meaning create a nuclear chain reaction. It was roughly $1 million worth of materials, equivalent to nearly $16 million today, and a concept that a nuclear chain reaction would allow the weaponization of the atom. “Its success would be the crucial proof needed to know it would be possible to create an atomic bomb,” said LANL Historian Roger Meade (C-NR). “This was the precursor to the Lab we have today, nearly 80 years later.”

Research on Remote and Hybrid Scientific Work: A Literature Review

This literature review is divided into two parts. The first part looks at new developments and emerging research specifically related to remote work since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This encompasses research and reporting on the impacts of COVID-19 on the workplace, more speculative writing on the possible future of remote and hybrid work, and impacts of remote work during COVID-19 for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The second part focuses on more fundamental research done on remote collaboration and remote work tools prior to COVID-19, which addresses in more detail how different types, aspects, or stages of work can best be supported using virtual collaboration tools. In both sections, we review literature that directly focuses on remote scientific collaboration, which is somewhat limited, as well as the broader literature on remote and hybrid work, which is relevant to a wide variety of workplaces, including scientific ones.

MindSynchro

This report presents the developments and results of MindSynchro project as part of DOE OE FOA 1861. DOE and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have made available to FOA awardees datasets containing years of real historical data recorded from various phasor measurement units (PMUs) which are installed in three large US interconnections: Texas (IC A), Western (IC B), and Eastern (IC C). The main goal of the project, which was successfully achieved, was to develop methods for detection and identification of events which are relevant for power grid operation. Tasks performed for achieving the project goals included data exploration and pre-processing, the development and application of physics-based features, data analysis and labeling based on unsupervised learning approaches, training and testing of DSSL models for classification of events which are relevant for power grid operation, and deployment of solutions to cloud environments. The methods developed in the project can potentially provide relevant benefits to power grid asset owners/operators in general in terms of situational awareness. Two main types of outcomes can be provided by these tools: Identification of specific relevant power grid event types: Semi-supervised ML methods developed in the project can adequately employ not only the relatively scarce labeled data but also the large amount of available unlabeled data to train models for detection of specific event types. Such methods enable the application of trained models for the detection of events in a population of PMUs much larger than that associated to the labeled events. Support in data labeling / label validation: Labels are critical for training of models for identification of specific types of events. However, labeling large amounts of data is a manual and tedious process. This means that such process is error prone and is not scalable. Methods developed in the project, based on ensembles of clustering models, have been successfully employed for turning manual labeling into a scalable process. Accurate identification of specific relevant events can provide the operators with immediate situational awareness that could otherwise require hours or days of analysis from domain experts. We envision that such methods could be initially employed in support of post-mortem analysis of events and, as confidence is gained, they could be employed for online/real-time support, providing, among other benefits, insights for avoiding major events which could happen due to a combination of smaller ones. On the longer term, related methods could potentially be employed to improve protection and control.
