Solar-cycle dependence of galactic cosmic ray flux. II - The correlation between the nucleonic flux and solar indices

To investigate the relationship between solar activity and cosmic-ray modulation, time series of the nucleonic flux and of solar plages, sunspots, centimeter radio noise, and the brightness of the white-light corona at 1.1 and 1.5 solar radii from the center of sun are cross-correlated. Data pertain to the years 1964-1967 during the ascending phase of the current solar cycle. The amplitudes and phases of correlation functions for filtered and unfiltered indices are discussed. The existence of a superior solar index for relating solar activity to long-term modulation is not yet demonstrated conclusively, and the time lag of modulation is too poorly determined to permit its use in estimating the radius of the modulation region.

Variation of forearm, hand, and finger blood flow indices with ambient temperature

Forearm, hand, and finger blood flow (impedance) changes are measured by impedance rheography on seven healthy male subjects aged 20-35 yr during exposure to ambient temperatures ranging from 10 to 46 C. All observations are made in an environmental chamber at a dew point temperature of 13 + or - 0.25 C. It is shown that impedance rheography is suitable for quantifying peripheral circulatory responses to thermal stress. The measured blood flow indices are found to be consistent with previously reported values for the forearm, hand, and fingers obtained using air or water displacement plethysmography. In particular, the more distal body segments exhibit relatively larger vasomotor responses to changes in ambient temperature than do the more proximal body segments.

Hydrocarbon concentrations in fire toxicity tests as an indication of flash fire propensity

The concentrations of hydrocarbons in the gases from fire toxicity tests are often determined to obtain an indication of their contribution to toxic effects and of the mechanisms of thermal decomposition. Because the gas compositions produced in the University of San Francisco/NASA toxicity screening test are generated under identical pyrolysis conditions, they offer the potential of comparing the flash-fire propensity of various materials.

Minor elements in lunar olivine as a petrologic indicator

Accurate electron microprobe analyses (approximately 50 ppm) were made for Al, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, and Ni in Mg-rich olivines which may derive from early lunar crust or deeper environments. Low-Ca contents consistently occur only in olivines from dunitic and troctolitic breccia: spinel troctolite and other rock types have high-Ca olivines suggesting derivation by near-surface processes. Rock 15445 has olivine with distinctly low CaO (approximately 0.01 wt.%). Chromium ranges to higher values (max.0.2 oxide wt.%) than for terrestrial harzburgites and lherzolites but is similar to the range in terrestrial komatiites. Divalent chromium may be indicated over trivalent Cr because olivines lack sufficient other elements for charge balance of the latter. NiO values in lunar specimens range from 0.00 to 0.07 wt.% and a weak anticorrelation with Cr2O3 suggests an oxidation state effect. Al2O3 values are mostly below 0.04-wt.% and show no obvious correlation with fragment type. TiO2 values lie below 0.13-wt.% and seem to correlate best with crystallization rate and plagioclase content of the host rock. High values of Al2O3 and TiO2 reported by other workers have not been confirmed, and are probably wrong.

Indicated mean-effective pressure instrument

An apparatus for measuring indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of an internal combustion piston or rotary engine or of an external combustion engine such as a stirling engine is disclosed. An optical shaft encoder measures crankshaft angle of the engine. Changes in volume with respect to changes in crank angle of one or more cylinders (dV/d theta) is determined either empirically or algebraically from engine geometry and stored in a memory. As the crank angle changes, dV/d theta) is read from the memory and multiplied by chamber or cylinder pressure. The product (P dv/d theta) is then added to the total previously accumulated in the cycle. Each time theta changes by an amount equal to delta theta, the process is repeated. At the end of each engine cycle, the total is equal to the IMEP value for that cycle.

Fatigue failure load indicator

An indicator for recording the load at which a fatigue specimen breaks during the last cycle of a fatigue test is described. A load cell is attached to the specimen which is alternately subjected to tension and compression loads. The output of the load cell which is proportional to the load on the specimen is applied to the input of a peak detector. Each time the specimen is subjected to a compression load, means are provided for applying a positive voltage to the rest of the peak detector to reset it. During the last cycle of the tension load the peak detector measures the maximum load on the specimen. Means are provided for disconnecting the load cell from the peak detector when there is a failure in the specimen.

Utilization of 100 mb midlatitude height fields as an indicator of sampling effects on total ozone variations

Midlatitude 100-mb height fields are employed to determine the effects of ground based sampling locations on measurements of variations in the total ozone content of the atmosphere. The precision of the zonal average heights computed by the technique of Angell and Korshover (1978) from data over ozone sampling areas at 50 deg N is compared to the zonal average computed from the entire data set. Linear regressions of ozone contents determined by an analysis of backscatter UV satellite data with respect to 100 mb heights are utilized to transform zonal differences in height to ozone levels. The zonal average total ozone sampling error is found to be on the order of 2% for midlatitudes of the Northern hemisphere, indicating that the general shape of ozone trends determined by ground-based observations appears to be real and the increase of ozone from the mid-1960's to the early 1970's may be greater than previously suggested.

The use of ionospheric indices to make real- and near-real-time forecasts of foF2 around Australia

Two computer programs are used to forecast foF2 at points around Australia from daily and hourly ionospheric indices. It is found that for forecasts one day ahead, the most accurate results are obtained using the past variations of foF2 at several stations to determine a latitudinal-average daily ionospheric index. Forecasts made with lead times of zero to three hours do not offer significant improvements over those made one day ahead.

Effect of graded physical load on the state of the liver from morphometric data and biochemical blood indices of rats against a background of hypokinesia

Tests were conducted on 100 sexually immature inbred August and Wistar male rats in order to determine the effects hypokinesia, physical load and phenamine on the liver. Weight and linear dimension fell in hypokinesia; total serum protein lowered and aldolase and cholesterol and beta-lipoprotein levels rose. Blood sugar content rose and liver glycogen fell. Interlinear differences of these indices are found. Rehabilitated physical loading against hypokinesia background diminished and at times completely prevented its negative effect. Extent of correction depended on animal species. Evidence of genotypical conditionality of organism adaptation to physical load in hypokinesia was found.

Solar activity prediction of sunspot numbers (verification). Predicted solar radio flux; predicted geomagnetic indices Ap and Kp

Efforts to further verify a previously reported technique for predicting monthly sunspot numbers over a period of years (1979 to 1989) involved the application of the technique over the period for the maximum epoch of solar cycle 19. Results obtained are presented. Methods and results for predicting solar flux (F10.7 cm) based on flux/sunspot number models, ascent and descent, and geomagnetic activity indices as a function of sunspot number and solar cycle phase classes are included.

Star counts as an indicator of galactic structure and quasar evolution

A detailed model of the stellar content of the Galaxy is described briefly. Illustrative applications of the model are made, using existing data, to indicate how star counts can be used to determine some parameters of galactic structure, to detect a massive (stellar) halo, and to constrain models of quasar evolution.

A pilot training manual for the terminal configured vehicle electronic horizontal situation indicator

The initial phase of a training program for the Terminal Configured Vehicle Electronic Situation indicator (EHSI) is presented. The EHSI and its symbology is introduced and interpretation of the symbols is explained. Basic symbols shown on the display at all times are first presented. Additional optional symbols to be used as appropriate during different portions of a flight are then introduced and various display configurations interpreted. The upper half of each page is a reproduction of the EHSI display or other pertinent instructional material and the bottom half contains explanatory text, simplifying production of an audiovisual package for use with large training classes. Two quizzes on the course material are included.

Correlation of spacecraft passive microwave system data with soil moisture indices (API)

Electrical scanning microwave radiometer brightness temperature, meteorological data, climatological data, and winter wheat crop information were used to estimate that soil moisture content in the Great Plains region. Results over the predominant winter wheat areas indicate that the best potential to infer soil moisture occurs during fall and spring. These periods encompass the growth stages when soil moisture is most important to winter wheat yield. Other significant results are reported.

A pilot training manual for the terminal configured vehicle electronic attitude director indicator

A hard copy version is presented of a 28-minute, 90 slide audiovisual program which provides the basic instructional format for introduction to the terminal configured vehicle electronic attitude director indicator (EADI) and the strategy for learning the symbols used on the EADI and their interpretation. The basic strategy is to start with known symbols and then introduce all new symbols with emphasis appropriate to their complexity and frequency of use. The upper half of each page of the manual contains a reproduction of the slide. The text associated with the slide is found on the lower half of each page and is recorded on audio tape.

PN lock indicator for dithered PN code tracking loop

In a delay-lock one-delta (+or - 1/2 chip) dithered PN code tracking loop, an indication of lock in the PN code tracking loop is provided by delaying the dithered local PN code by a half chip to produce a +0, -1 dithered PN code that is then multiplied with the received PN-spread IF signal to produce a signal proportional to the correlation of this dithered code offset from the received code. The correlation signal is bandpass filtered, amplified with AGC control, and square-law detected to obtain a dc signal proportional to the degree of correlation. The dc signal is multiplied by the dithering control signal to effectivity substract noise voltage from the lock correlation signal which is then compared with a PN lock status signal.

Carbonaceous chondrites. II - Carbonaceous chondrite phyllosilicates and light element geochemistry as indicators of parent body processes and surface conditions

Petrographic analyses of CM matrices characterized four phyllosilicates in Murray and Murchison meteorites and Fe- and Mg-serpentines in Nogoya. All phyllosilicates and bulk matrices show enrichment of K relative to Na when compared with bulk meteorites; the loss of Na and some Cl, and the addition of H2O, CO2, and water-soluble organics during alteration indicates a partially open system. Synthesis of soluble organic materials may have occurred in CM matrices before aqueous alteration of the precursive phases. Nogoya was 95% altered and has a bulk C content of 5.2%, higher than any meteorite; also, it has the lowest measured C-13/C-12 ratio of any carbonaceous chondrite except for Karoonda.

On the reliability of hook echoes as tornado indicators

A study of radar echoes associated with the tornadoes of the 3 April 1974 outbreak was performed to evaluate the usefulness of echo shape as an indicator of tornadic thunderstorms. The hook shape was usually successful in characterizing an echo as tornadic, with a false alarm rate of 16%. Because hook echoes were relatively rare, however, a less restrictive shape called distinctive was more successful at detecting tornadic thunderstorms, identifying 65% of the tornadic echoes. An echo had a distinctive shape if it possessed a marked appendage on its right rear flank or was in the shape of a spiral, comma or line echo wave pattern (LEWP). Characteristics of the distinctive echo are given.
