On the reported optical activity of amino acids in the Murchison meteorite

It is shown that the explanation of terrestrial contamination of the Murchison meteorite is consistent with the analysis of extracts from the meteorite reported by Engel and Nagy (EN) (1982) and is much more probable than their suggestion that the excess of L-enantiomers for several protein amino acids is due to asymmetric synthesis or decomposition. The low abundance of serine and threonine reported by EN may be due to their decomposition during the derivatization procedure, and the absence of methionine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine can be attributed to various causes. The amount of contamination in EN's extracts are estimated from a mass balance of the amino acid enantiomers, and it is found that the amino acids in the HCl could be due entirely to contamination while in the water extract the amount of contamination ranges from about 40 to 97 percent, depending on the amino acid. The argument that contaminants were preferentially extracted by EN's procedure cannot account for the failure to detect methionine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine.

Oscillator strengths and collision strengths for S II

Calculations are presented of the collision strengths for electron impact excitation of S II from the ground 3s(2)3p(3)(4)S0 state to excited states 3s3p(4)(4)p, 3s(2(3p(2)4s(4)P, and 3s(2)3p(2)3d(4)P. The collision strengths are calculated in a close-coupling approximate ion for the energy range up to 10 to the 6th K. In addition, oscillator strengths are given for these transitions, as well as for some UV lines which have lower states 3s(2)3p(3)(2)D(O) and 3s(2)3p(3)(2)P(0). The calculation of the collision strengths involves the use of configuration interaction target wave functions which give oscillator strengths accurate to 30 percent in most cases.

20 x 20 IF switch matrix for SS-TDMA systems

Satellite-switched TDMA, an effective means for the increasing of communication satellite channel capacity and the improvement of system flexibility, requires that the spacecraft carry an IF switch matrix in order to provide interconnectivity among multiple beam antennas. Attention is presently given to the development of a 20 x 20 IF switch matrix for the NASA 30/20 GHz communications satellite which will provide a 2.5 GHz bandwidth at C-band frequencies with a switching speed of 10 nsec. Switch matrix architecture, switching device characteristic, and distribution control unit design practices are discussed, together with switch matrix reliability.

Recent advances in thin silicon solar cells

Recent progress in thin (2-4 mils, 50-100 microns) silicon solar cells which extends the capability of the cells into areas of use for possible space missions is reviewed. The production of thin flexible arrays using wrapped-around junction and wrapped-around contact cells is considered. Attention is also given to the formation of cells with very low solar absorptance (alpha-s less than 0.66) through changes in the AR coating, changes in front contact area, and maximizing cell efficiency.

Solitons in superfluid (He-3)-A - Bound states on domain walls

The effects of solitons on the spectrum of fermion excitations in superfluid (He-3)-A are investigated. It is found that there is a two-dimensional manifold of bound states with energies within the gap of the bulk superfluid. The bound-state spectrum lacks inversion symmetry parallel to the wall.

An aperture synthesis map of HCN emission close to W3 IRS 4

W3 has been observed in the J = 1-0 transition of HCN with the millimeter-wave interferometer at the Hat Creek Observatory with a resolution of 11.5 by 11.1 arcsec. The HCN emission is detected in an isolated cloud with a diameter of 40 arcsec. The cloud is located to the south of IRS 4 and the compact H II region C and coincides with the western far-IR cloud mapped at 400 microns by Jaffe (1983). The total mass of the cloud is estimated to be in the range 250-2500 solar masses. No HCN emission was detected around IRS 5, the location of the other 400 micron peak. Also, no evidence for a new (heretofore undetected at other wavelengths), young main-sequence star earlier than B0 was found in the new continuum map at 3 mm.

Oscillator strengths and collision strengths for S III

The present calculation, in a close-coupled approximation for the energy range up to 1,000,000 K, yields collision strengths for the electron impact excitation of S III from the ground 3p2 3P state to the excited states 3s3p3 3D0, 3P0, 3S0, 3d 3D0, 3P0, and 4s 3P0. Also obtained are those transitions' oscillator strengths, and strengths for others involving 3p2 1D and 1S. Configuration-interaction target wave functions yielding oscillator strengths that are accurate to 20 percent are used in collision strength calculations.

Substrate orientation dependence of enhanced epitaxial regrowth of silicon

This work extends the study of dopant-enhanced epitaxial regrowth rate of amorphized Si from the 100 to the 110 and 111 line orientations of Si. Boron and phosphorus dopants are considered. The annealing temperatures are 500 and 550 C. Phosphorus enhances the growth rates in all three orientations by a constant factor of 8.1 + or - 0.9. Boron produces a higher enhancement factor of 12.2 + or - 1.2, except in the case of 100. Implications of the results on various growth models are considered. The crystalline quality of regrown 111 layers is improved in the doped samples.

High-speed wide band 20 x 20 microwave switch matrix

The use of a dynamic switching matrix for future communication satellites will significantly increase the communication channel capacity and improve the system capability and flexibility. This paper describes the design and development of a unique coupler crossbar 20 x 20 microwave switch matrix. This paper also presents the test results of the proof-of-concept model that meets the requirements for a high-speed satellite switched, time division multiple access (SS-TDMA) system.

Oscillator strengths for OII ions

Oscillator strengths between various doublet states of OII ions are calculated in which extensive multi-configuration wave functions are used. The lower levels for the transitions are of the 2p(3) D(2)o and 2p(3) 2po states, and the upper levels are 2p(4), 3s, and 3d states. The results, which are estimated to have errors of less than 10% for individual transitions, agree quite well with the beam foil experiments, as well as with the calculations by use of the non-closed shell many electron theory (NCMET). The agreement with the rocket measurements is also good except for the 538/581 A pair, in which the 538 A line is believed to be blend with the other stronger quartet line. However, a comparison with the recent branching ratio measurement indicates that discrepances between the present calculation and th experiment do exist for certain transistions.

High efficiency solar cell processing

At the time of writing, cells made by several groups are approaching 19% efficiency. General aspects of the processing required for such cells are discussed. Most processing used for high efficiency cells is derived from space-cell or concentrator cell technology, and recent advances have been obtained from improved techniques rather than from better understanding of the limiting mechanisms. Theory and modeling are fairly well developed, and adequate to guide further asymptotic increases in performance of near conventional cells. There are several competitive cell designs with promise of higher performance ( 20%) but for these designs further improvements are required. The available cell processing technology to fabricate high efficiency cells is examined.

Collision strengths for 1199 and 1729 of S III

Collision strengths are calculated for the S III ground state from electron impact excitation in the Io torus. The study is based on data taken at 119.9 nm and 172.9 nm by the IUE spacecraft and with the rocket-borne Faint Object Telescope. The collision strengths of the 3p(2)3P3s3p(3)(5)S(4) and (3)P-3s3p(3)(3)D(0) UV lines are derived from a three-state close coupling aproximation. A Gailitis averaging scheme accounts for resonance effects in the forbidden transition. The calculated intensities of the two transitions at an electron temperature of 80,000 K are in agreement with observed intensities.

Comparison of scaled model data to full size energy efficient engine test results

Acoustic tests of a subscale fan and a subscale mixer nozzle were conducted in anechoic chambers over a variety of operating conditions. The subscale fan test was an investigation into the effects of vane/blade ratio and spacing on fan generated noise. A turbulence control structure (TCS) was used to simulate the 'turbulence-free' condition in flight. The subscale mixer nozzle test investigated the acoustic properties of several different forced mixer designs. A tertiary flow was utilized on the mixer model to simulate the forward velocity effects on the jet. The results were scaled up to full size conditions and compared with measured engine data. The comparisons showed good agreement between the component scaled model results and the full scale engine data.

Measurement and prediction of Energy Efficient Engine noise

The NASA/GE Energy Efficient Engine (E3) static noise levels were measured in an acoustic arena on the Integrated Core and Low Spool Test System. These measured levels were scaled to the appropriate size to power four study aircraft and were projected to flight for evaluation of noise levels relative to FAR36, Stage III limits. As a result of these evaluations, it is predicted that the NASA/GE E3 engine with a wide spacing cut-on blade/vane ratio fan and a forced mixer nozzle can meet FAR36 Stage III limits with sufficient design margin.

An inert marker study for palladium silicide formation - Si moves in polycrystalline Pd2Si

A novel use of Ti marker is introduced to investigate the moving species during Pd2Si formation on 111 and 100 line-type Si substrates. Silicide formed from amorphous Si is also studied using a W marker. Although these markers are observed to alter the silicide formation in the initial stage, the moving species can be identified once a normal growth rate is resumed. It is found that Si is the dominant moving species for all three types of Si crystallinity. However, Pd will participate in mass transport when Si motion becomes obstructed.
