A study of high-altitude manned research aircraft employing strut-braced wings of high-aspect-ratio

The effect of increased wing aspect ratio of subsonic aircraft on configurations with and without strut bracing. Results indicate that an optimum cantilever configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 26, has a 19% improvement in cruise range when compared to a baseline concept with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 10. An optimum strut braced configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 28, has a 31% improvment in cruise range when compared to the same baseline concept. This improvement is mainly due to the estimated reduction in wing weight resulting from use of lifting struts. All configurations assume the same mission payload and fuel. The drag characteristics of the wings are enhanced with the use of laminar flow airfoils. A method for determining the extent of attainable natural laminar flow, and methods for preliminary structural design and for aerodynamic analysis of wings lifting struts are presented.

High temperature alkali corrosion in high velocity gases

The effects of potential impurities in coal derived liquids such as Na, K, Mg, Ca and Cl on the accelerated corrosion of IN-100, U-700, IN-792 and Mar-M509 were investigated using a Mach 0.3 burner rig for times to 1000 hours in one hour cycles. These impurities were injected in combination as aqueous solutions into the combustor of the burner rig. The experimental matrix utilized was designed statistically. The extent of corrosion was determined by metal recession. The metal recession data were fitted by linear regression to a polynomial expression which allows both interpolation and extrapolation of the data. As anticipated, corrosion increased rapidly with Na and K, and a marked maximum in the temperature response was noted for many conditions. In contrast, corrosion decreased somewhat as the Ca, Mg and Cl contents increased. Extensive corrosion was observed at concentrations of Na and K as low as 0.1 PPM at long times.

High voltage cabling for high power spacecraft

Studies by NASA have shown that many of the space missions proposed for the time period 1980 to 2000 will require large spacecraft structures to be assembled in orbit. Large antennas and power systems up to 2.5 MW size are predicted to supply the electrical/electronic subsystems, solar electric subsystems, solar electric propulsion, and space processing for the near-term programs. Platforms of 100 meters/length for stable foundations, utility stations, and supports for these multi-antenna and electronic powered mechanisms are also being considered. This paper includes the findings of an analytic and conceptual design study for large spacecraft power distribution, and electrical loads and their influence on the cable and connector requirements for these proposed large spacecraft.

Distortion measurement of antennas under space simulation conditions with high accuracy and high resolution by means of holography

The use of laser holography for measuring the distortion of antennas under space simulation conditions is described. The subject is the so-called double exposure procedure which allows to measure the distortion in the order of 1 to 30/micrometers + or - 0.5 per hologramme of an area of 4 m diameter max. The method of holography takes into account the constraints of the space simulation facility. The test method, the test set up and the constraints by the space simulation facility are described. The results of the performed tests are presented and compared with the theoretical predictions. The test on the K-Band Antenna e.g., showed a distortion of approximately 140/micrometers + or - 5/micrometers measured during the cool down from -10 C to -120 C.

High Sensitivity, High Angular Resolution Far-infrared Photometry from the KAO

Most of the luminosity of embedded sources is reemitted in the far-infrared continuum. Measurements in the far-infrared are essential to understand the energetics of the interstellar medium, and of star formation regions in particular. Measurements from the KAO, are made in diffraction limited beams that sample a spatial scale considerably smaller than that given by IRAS. The KAO instrument technology has matured to the point that the single scan limiting flux of IRAS at 100 micro can be reached in a diffraction limited beam in a single typical KAO observing leg. The far-infrared photometer system and selections of recent observations are presented.

High sensitivity high resolution double scatter 1-30 MeV gamma ray telescope

The design and performance of the double-scatter 1-30-MeV gamma-ray telescope developed at the University of California for balloon-borne observations are reported and illustrated with drawings, diagrams, and graphs. The telescope comprises an upper array of 16 6.03 x 6.03 x 100-cm plastic scintillator bars viewed by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) at both ends, a lower array (at 100-cm distance) of 16 4.83 x 4.83 x 100-cm NaI(Tl) bars viewed at both ends by PMTs, and four 122 x 122 x 0.64-cm plastic sheets viewed by four PMTs each as charged-particle anticoincidence shielding. The operating principle of the telescope, the tests conducted on the NaI(Tl) bars, the on-board data-processing electronics, and the overall performance are characterized. Performance parameters include area 1 sq m, field of view pi sr, 4-sigma sensitivity above 1 MeV 0.00004 gamma/sq cm sec over 25 h, angular resolution about 3.5 deg FWHM, and energy resolution 10 percent at 1 MeV and 6 percent at 6 MeV.

High-energy and ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

The nature of the source and history of Galactic cosmic rays is examined in the light of new measurements on cosmic rays and related astronomical measurements. The possibility of both a Galactic center source and sources of one type distributed throughout the Galaxy is addressed. The concept of escape first from a Galactic plane trapping region and then from the larger region of the Galaxy as a whole is addressed. Two types of sources are considered, along with the reasons that at least two types appear to be necessary. Among the combinations considered are two distributed Galactic sources, one distributed source type and a Galactic center source, and one distributed source type and an extragalactic source. The constraints are seen to be fairly restrictive, leading to the conclusion that there must be two Galactic source types with quite different characteristics.

Nonlinear lift control at high speed and high angle of attack using vortex flow technology

Nonlinear lift control at subsonic, transonic and low supersonic speeds owes its origin to the separated but organized vortical flows interacting with the wing upper surface. Since most of this flow originates near the wing or control-surface leading-edge, a variety of devices have been studied experimentally which interact with and/or control this flow in order to gain a beneficial effect. The benefits (effects) originally studied were only associated with lift enhancement. Whereas, now the studied benefits encompass performance increase, attention to changes in trimmed conditions and longitudinal stability, improvements in lateral stability, and the attendant variation with changing Mach number. For those devices that can be theoretically modeled, state-of-the-art computer codes have been used for device design and/or analysis. Comparisons at design and off-design conditions are presented for validation purposes.

Transitional Boundary Layers Under the Influence of High Free Stream Turbulence, Intensive Wall Cooling and High Pressure Gradients in Hot Gas Circulation

The requirements for fundamental experimental studies of the influence of free stream turbulence, pressure gradients and wall cooling are discussed. Under turbine-like free stream conditions, comprehensive tests of transitional boundary layers with laminar, reversing and turbulent flow increments were performed to decouple the effects of the parameters and to determine the effects during mutual interaction.

Off-line processing of ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar data with high precision and high throughput

The first European remote sensing satellite ERS-1 will be launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1989. The expected lifetime is two to three years. The spacecraft sensors will primarily support ocean investigations and to a limited extent also land applications. Prime sensor is the Active Microwave Instrumentation (AMI) operating in C-Band either as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) or as Wave-Scatterometer and simultaneously as Wind-Scatterometer. In Europe there will be two distinct types of processing for ERS-1 SAR data, Fast Delivery Processing and Precision Processing. Fast Delivery Proceessing will be carried out at the ground stations and up to three Fast Delivery products per pass will be delivered to end users via satellite within three hours after data acquisition. Precision Processing will be carried out in delayed time and products will not be generated until several days or weeks after data acquisition. However, a wide range of products will be generated by several Processing and Archiving Facilities (PAF) in a joint effort coordinated by ESA. The German Remote Sensing Data Center (Deutsches Fernerkundungsdatenzentrum DFD) will develop and operate one of these facilities. The related activities include the acquisition, processing and evaluation of such data for scientific, public and commercial users. Based on this experience the German Remote Sensing Data Center is presently performing a Phase-B study regarding the development of a SAR processor for ERS-1. The conceptual design of this processing facility is briefly outlined.

Wind velocity measurement accuracy with highly stable 12 mJ/pulse high repetition rate CO2 laser master oscillator power amplifier

A coherent CO2 lidar operating in a master oscillator power amplifier configuration (MOPA) is described for both ground-based and airborne operation. Representative data taken from measurements against stationary targets in both the ground-based and airborne configurations are shown for the evaluation of the frequency stability of the system. Examples of data are also given which show the results of anomalous system operation. Overall results demonstrate that velocity measurements can be performed consistently to an accuracy of + or - 0.5 m/s and in some cases + or - 0.1 m/s.

Validation of aerodynamic parameters at high angles of attack for RAE high incidence research models

Two series of free-flight tests have been conducted for combat aircraft configuration research models in order to investigate flight behavior near departure conditions as well as to obtain response data from which aerodynamic characteristics can be derived. The structure of the mathematical model and values for the mathematical derivatives have been obtained through an analysis of the first series, using stepwise regression. The results thus obtained are the bases of the design of active control laws. Flight test results for a novel configuration are compared with predicted responses.

Miniature high stability high temperature space rated blackbody radiance source

This paper presents the design and test performance of a conical cavity type blackbody radiance source that will meet the requirements of the Halogen Occultation Experiment on the NASA Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite program. The thrust of this design effort was to minimize the heat losses, in order to keep the power usage under 7.5 watts, and to minimize the amount of silica in the materials. Silica in the presence of the platinum heater winding used in this design would cause the platinum to erode, changing the operating temperature set-point. The design required the development of fabrication techniques which would provide very small, close tolerance parts from extremely difficult-to-machine materials. Also, a space rated ceramic core and unique, low thermal conductance, ceramic-to-metal joint was developed, tested and incorporated in this design. The completed flight qualification hardware has undergone performance, environmental and life testing. The design configuration and test results are discussed in detail.
