SQUID Readout of a High-$Q$ Superconducting $LC$ Resonator

We demonstrate the readout of a superconducting $LC$ resonator, with $Q \approx 2 \times 10^{6}$ at approximately 250 kHz, using a dc SQUID followed by a SQUID series-array amplifier readout chain. We find that $Q$ depends on the SQUID flux-bias point, increasing near the shallow-slope point of the SQUID modulation curve and decreasing near the steep-slope point, consistent with the previously observed SQUID damping effects. From this variation, we infer the SQUID effective input impedance. We further infer the effective temperature of the resonator circuit from the resonance peak in the noise spectrum and show that it also depends on the SQUID flux-bias point, suggesting a possible contribution from SQUID back-action noise. This system provides a working prototype for future experiments based on lumped-element resonators with SQUID readout, in particular low-mass axion searches within the DMRadio program.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set recorded with the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques are employed to improve the precision of the results compared to earlier measurements. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.15 GeV = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.12 (syst) GeV. In addition, a combination with the mass measurement at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV in the diphoton final state is performed resulting in $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.14 GeV = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat) $\pm$ 0.11 (syst) GeV.

Anti-Ultralocality and Plateau Models of Inflation

Anti-ultralocality refers to the growth of spatial gradient terms relative to velocity terms in the coupled Einstein--scalar field equations. It is a characteristic feature of decelerated expansion before the onset of inflation. Previous numerical relativity studies have shown that anti-ultralocality prevents the onset of inflation in models with power-law inflaton potentials. In this paper, we show that models with plateau-shaped inflaton potentials, which are considered to be the simplest way to generate a tensor-to-scalar ratio below current observational upper limits, are especially vulnerable to anti-ultralocality effects. The reasons are the flatness of the plateau and the energy density gap of $\sim 10$ orders of magnitude between the Planck density and the plateau potential energy. To study the problem, we develop a protocol for assessing the viability of inflationary models in general, and we apply it to a plateau potential using a previously validated numerical relativity code. We find that, starting from generic initial conditions, the growth of gradient terms in the Einstein equations relative to non-gradient terms either prevents inflation from lasting for enough $e$-folds or triggers a phase of quantum runaway. We show that the fine-tuning of initial conditions necessary to avoid these issues becomes more severe as the energy scale of inflation is made smaller, disfavoring common approaches for reducing the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Laser Response in ECAL Crystals in CMS Detector

The dataset contains the Laser responses of the Lead-Tungstate crystals in the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) of the CMS Experiment recorded during the Run 2 (2016-2018) of LHC running. The datasets consists of two tar folders: one corresponding to the "plus" side of the detector and one corresponding to the "minus" side. Each folder contains files in csv format, each file corresponding to the histories of all crystals in each "ieta" ring. The detailed description of the columns can be found under the section names "dataset" on Github pages at https://fair-umn.github.io/fair_ecal_monitoring.

Electron Energy Regression in High-Granularity Calorimeter Prototype

The dataset consists of simulations of calibrated reconstructed hits produced by a positron passing through the HGCAL test beam prototype. For the simulations, Monte Carlo method is used to produce the positrons with energy ranging from 10 to 350 GeV. The dataset contains the coordinates of the calibrated reconstructed hits in the prototype along with the calibrated energy in units of MIP. The HDF5 files can be extracted from the gzip files.
