Welding technique produces more reliable joints than soldering. Investigation used different sizes of copper conductors and component lead ribbons, corrosion protection platings, and melting points of metals being joined. Size and thickness of field adjusting plate can be varied. Memory chip specification is relaxed, since chips in structure need not be matched in bias margin.
The recording of particle tracks in the form of sparks or streamers running at different angles toward the electric field of the chamber was studied. The investigations were performed with two discharge spark chambers consisting of boxes filled with neon at 1 atm. The spark chambers were powered by a pulse with an amplitude of 300 kV applied from a pulse generator. The recording of particle tracks in the form of sparks took place at track angles smaller than 30 deg with respect to the electrical field. At angle larger than 40 deg the tracks are recorded in the form of streamers. Particle traces with respect to the angle are given.

The theory of heterojunction and graded bandgap solar cells was studied to help determine the material compositions and device dimensions needed for high efficiency solar cells. Because of the involved analysis of the fundamental equations describing solar cell operation, a general numerical device analysis program was used. A major part of the initial work was involved in modifying an existing silicon solar cell analysis program to account for the unique features of graded bandgap and heterojunction solar cells. The most successful III-V solar cells have so far been constructed in the GaAs and Gal-xAlxAs material systems; this project was concerned with such solar cells. The most efficient solar cell so far evaluated is an abrupt heterojunction cell with a pure AlAs layer at the surface with a GaAs substrate. The predicted efficiency for this cell is slightly larger than that of a graded bandgap Gal-xAlxAs solar cell.
The results of an experimental program to develop the epitaxial growth techniques and analytical characterization techniques to fabricate graded bandgap solar cells are reported.
A computer program was designed for the analysis of variable composition solar cells and applied to several proposed solar cell structures using appropriate semiconductor materials. The program simulates solar cells made of a ternary alloy of two binary semiconductors with an arbitrary composition profile, and an abrupt or Gaussian doping profile of polarity n-on-p or p-on-n with arbitrary doping levels. Once the device structure is specified, the program numerically solves a complete set of differential equations and calculates electrostatic potential, quasi-Fermi levels, carrier concentrations and current densities, total current density and efficiency as functions of terminal voltage and position within the cell. These results are then recorded by computer in tabulated or plotted form for interpretation by the user.
Self-contained spark generator that simulates electrical noise caused by discharge of static charge is useful tool when checking sensitive component and equipment. In test set-up, device introduces repeatable noise pulses as behavior of components is monitored. Generator uses only standard commercial parts and weighs only 4 pounds; portable dc power supply is used. Two configurations of generator have been developed: one is free-running arc source, and one delivers spark in response to triggering pulse.

An algorithm for obtaining sufficiently accurate estimates of a system parameter Y, given a data record of the parameter in which at arbitrary times no direct observations of Y exist, and describing the variance of these estimates, is proposed. The method provides estimates at all requested times, and the variance of the estimates is maintained as close to the variance of directly measured data as the quality of input information will allow. Three classes of information are used: (1) the measured data record of Y and the statistical extension of this record into time intervals of no direct measurement, obtained by a modification of standard autocorrelation techniques; (2) an a priori indicator of the behavior of Y; and (3) one or more indirect indicators of Y based on observation of other system parameters. The application of the algorithm to the SEASAT-A attitude determination under conditions of sensor field-of-view limitations and sun occultations is presented.
