Interannual variability of Indian monsoon rainfall

The interannual variability of the Indian summer monsoon and its relationships with other atmospheric fluctuations were studied in hopes of gaining some insight into the predicability of the rainfall. Rainfall data for 31 meteorological subdivisions over India were provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Fifty-three years of seasonal mean anomaly sea-level pressure (SLP) fields were used to determine if any relationships could be detected between fluctuations in Northern Hemisphere surface pressure and Indian monsoon rainfall. Three month running mean sea-level pressure anomalies at Darwin (close to one of the centers of the Southern Oscillation) were compiled for months preceding and following extreme years for rainfall averaged over all of India. Anomalies are small before the monsoon, but are quite large in months following the summer season. However, there is a large decrease in Darwin pressure for months preceding a heavy monsoon, while a deficient monsoon is preceded by a sharp increase in Darwin pressure. If a time series is constructed of the tendency of Darwin SLP between the Northern Hemisphere winter (DJF) and spring (MAM) and a correlation coefficient is computed between it and 81 years of rainfall average over all of India, one gets a C. C. of -.46, which is higher than any other previously computed predictor of the monsoon rainfall. This relationship can also be used to make a qualitative forecast for rainfall over the whole of India by considering the sign of the tendency in extreme monsoon years.

The use of a formal simulator to verify a simple real time control program

The authors present an initial and elementary investigation of the formal specification and mechanical verification of programs that interact with environments. They describe a mechanical proof that a simple, real time control program keeps a vehicle on a straightline course in a variable crosswind. To formalize the specification they define a mathematical function which models the interaction of the program and its environment. They then state and proved two theorems about this function: the simulated vehicle never gets farther than three units away from the intended course, and it comes to the course if the wind ever remains steady for at least four sampling units.

An experiment proposed and set up by the readers will be flying on board the Shuttle; these are the rules of the game; the experiments of others

The 400th round trip ticket to space via the space shuttle is booked in the name of an Italian journal. Students from that country are offered an opportunity to propose an experiment for NASA's Get Away Special program. The dimensional characteristics of the container, as specified by NASA, are given as well as limitations of weight, volume, diameter, and height for the experiment. The types of experiments in the OSS-1 payload and their operation are described.

Lageos orbit and solar eclipses

The objective was to assess the importance of solar eclipses on Lageos' orbit. Solar radiation pressure perturbs the orbit of the Lageos satellite. The GEODYN orbit determination computer program includes solar radiation pressure as one of the forces operating on the satellite as it integrates the orbit. GEODYN also takes into account the extinction of sunlight when Lageos moves into the Earth's shadow. The effect of solar eclipses on the semimajor axis of Lageos' orbit was computed analytically by assuming Lageos to be in a circular orbit, the Sun and the Moon to be in the plane of the orbit, and the Moon to be stationary in the sky in front of the Sun. Also, the magnitude of the radiation pressure is assumed to be linearly related to the angular separation of the Sun and Moon, and that Lageos is a perfect absorber of radiation. The computation indicates that an eclipse of the Sun by the Moon as seen by Lageos can affect the semimajor axis at the 1 centimeter (1 cm) level. Such a change is significant enough to include in GEODYN, in order to get an accurate orbit for Lageos.

Residual strength of five boron/aluminum laminates with crack-like notches after fatigue loading

Boron/aluminum specimens were made with crack-like slits in the center and with various proportions of 0 and + or - 45 deg plies. They were fatigue loaded and then fractured to determine their residual strengths. The fatigue loads were generally in the range of 60 to 80 percent of the static tensile strength of the specimen as determined from a previous study, and the stress ratio was .05. For virtually all of the specimens the fatigue loading was continued for 100,000 cycles. The specimens were radiographed after the fatigue loading to determine the nature of the fatigue damage. A few specimens were sectioned and examined in a scanning electron microscope after being radiographed in order to verify the interpretation of the radiographs and also to get a better insight into the nature of the fatigue damage. The results indicate that the fatiguing does not significantly affect the strength of the specimens tested. The results of the radiography and of the scanning electron microscopy indicate that the 45 deg plies suffer extensive damage in the form of split and broken fibers and matrix cracking in the vicinity of the ends of the split. By contrast, the only significant damage to the 0 deg plies was a single 0 deg matric crack growing from the ends of the slit and between the 0 deg fibers.

Design Spectrum Analysis in NASTRAN

The utility of Design Spectrum Analysis is to give a mode by mode characterization of the behavior of a design under a given loading. The theory of design spectrum is discussed after operations are explained. User instructions are taken up here in three parts: Transient Preface, Maximum Envelope Spectrum, and RMS Average Spectrum followed by a Summary Table. A single DMAP ALTER packet will provide for all parts of the design spectrum operations. The starting point for getting a modal break-down of the response to acceleration loading is the Modal Transient rigid format. After eigenvalue extraction, modal vectors need to be isolated in the full set of physical coordinates (P-sized as opposed to the D-sized vectors in RF 12). After integration for transient response the results are scanned over the solution time interval for the peak values and for the times that they occur. A module called SCAN was written to do this job, that organizes these maxima into a diagonal output matrix. The maximum amplifier in each mode is applied to the eigenvector of each mode which then reveals the maximum displacements, stresses, forces and boundary reactions that the structure will experience for a load history, mode by mode. The standard NASTRAN output processors have been modified for this task. It is required that modes be normalized to mass.

Effects of shuttle bay environment on UV sensitive photographic film results of measurements aboard STS-7 and STS-8

Schumann emulsions, having low gelatin content and no protective gelatin overcoating, are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions and handling. Experiments using this emulsion are to be flown on the space shuttle within the cargo-bay. Because the environment of the cargo-bay is unknown, a Get-Away-Special payload was designed to expose Kodak-type SO 652 Schumann emulsion to the residual atmosphere of the cargo-bay. The experiment was programmed to make exposures for various time periods to determine the maximum length of time the film could be exposed in making a measurement and what precautions would be required to preserve the film during ascent into orbit and reentry. The results of the STS-7 and STS-8 flights indicated that long exposures in the shuttle bay do not produce high fog levels in orbit. Observations of severe bleaching of the latent image makes protection of the emulsion during reentry manditory and increase of fog levels with time set a limit of four weeks (preferably less than three) between installation and recovery of the emulsion for processing.

Towards an organic photobattery - Photovoltaic properties of some thermal copolyamino acids

Thermal copolymers of amino acids have been examined as a novel material for photovoltaic devices. Due to the steric effects of amino acids during polymerization, these polymers are highly ordered, and pigments such as flavins and pterins are formed as part of the polymer. The controllably varied composition of the amino acids in the polymer makes it possible to get either electron-donor or electron-acceptor, or both kinds of groups in varying degrees. The constituent photosensitive element has been made either of photosensitive polymer film or spherule.

Reinitialization issues in fault tolerant systems

This paper is concerned with the reinitialization of fault tolerant systems in which detection and isolation (FDI) techniques are used, on-line, to identify and compensate for system failures. Specifically, it will focus on FDI techniques which utilize analytic redundancy, arising from a knowledge of the plant dynamics, by analyzing the residuals of a no-fail filter designed on the assumption of no failures. In these types of fault tolerant systems, system failures have to propagate through the no-fail filter dynamics in order to get detected. Therefore, the no-fail filter must be reinitialized after the isolation of a failure so that the accumulated effects of the failure are removed. In this paper, various approaches to this reinitialization problem will be discussed.

An investigation into the probabilistic combination of quasi-static and random accelerations

The development of design load factors for aerospace and aircraft components and experiment support structures, which are subject to a simultaneous vehicle dynamic vibration (quasi-static) and acoustically generated random vibration, require the selection of a combination methodology. Typically, the procedure is to define the quasi-static and the random generated response separately, and arithmetically add or root sum square to get combined accelerations. Since the combination of a probabilistic and a deterministic function yield a probabilistic function, a viable alternate approach would be to determine the characteristics of the combined acceleration probability density function and select an appropriate percentile level for the combined acceleration. The following paper develops this mechanism and provides graphical data to select combined accelerations for most popular percentile levels.

Relativistic jet meets target - The gamma-rays from 3C 273

Gamma-rays dominate the emission from quasar 3C 273, although they cannot arise in its active center. Their origin is ascribed to a relativistic beam which entrains and clumps ambient cluster gas. Secondary electrons from nuclear collisions lead to bremsstrahlung gamma-rays and ultimately to a double radio source. This model requires a great deal of clumping of jet and target matter to get sufficient reactions to occur. The clumping required is consistent with the Liouville theorem, given the high collimation of the beam, which suggests that the process, however unexpected, is at least thermodynamically permitted. The present model is experimentally distinguishable from other models through its location of the X-ray source in the extended optical jet region, and through a number of detailed spectral features.

Complete flowfields over low and wide angle AOTV conceptual configurations

Flowfields over two conceptual aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicles, a moderate lift-to-drag ratio biconic, and an axisymmetric zero lift aerobrake are investigated. The solution procedures employ a compressible Navier-Stokes time-asymptotic technique for blunt body flow and a Parabolized Navier-Stokes spatial marching technique for the primarily supersonic shock layer flow over low-angle bodies. Emphasis is placed on the laminar convective heating predictions and comparisons to experimental data where available. Code robustness and solution times are discussed and guidelines are given for the specification of various numerical parameters. The Parabolized Navier-Stokes technique has a high probability of solution success for the range of applications considered herein, and very good comparisons with experimental heat-transfer data have been obtained. The blunt body Navier-Stokes code is more sensitive to parameter specification for the aerobrake calculations. Still, coarse grid solutions can be obtained quickly to get a good first cut at flowfield definition. Fair to good comparisons have been obtained between experimental heating and pressure data and coarse and fine grid solutions.

Project Explorer

PROJECT EXPLORER is a program that will fly student-developed experiments onboard the Space Shuttle in NASA's Get-Away Special (GAS) containers. The program is co-sponsored by the Alabama Space and Rocket Center, the Alabama-Mississippi Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Alabama A&M University and requires extensive support by the University of Alabama in Huntsville. A unique feature of this project will demonstrate transmissions to ground stations on amateur radio frequencies in English language. Experiments Nos. 1, 2, and 3 use the microgravity of space flight to study the solidification of lead-antimony and aluminum-copper alloys, the growth of potassium-tetracyanoplatinate hydrate crystals in an aqueous solution, and the germination of radish seeds. Flight results will be compared with Earth-based data. Experiment No. 4 features radio transmission and will also provide timing for the start of all other experiments. A microprocessor will obtain real-time data from all experiments as well as temperature and pressure measurements taken inside the canister. These data will be transmitted on previously announced amateur radio frequencies after they have been converted into the English language by a digitalker for general reception.
