A study of the toxicology of pyrolysis gases from synthetic polymers

An apparatus and procedure for evaluating the toxicity of pyrolysis gases from synthetic polymers are described. In each test, four Swiss albino mice are exposed in a 5-liter chamber to the gases from materials pyrolyzed at 700 C. The apparatus is simple in design, easy to clean, inexpensive and gives reproducible results. Data on several fluorine-containing and polyamide polymers are presented.

Thermal performance of an integrated thermal protection system for long-term storage of cryogenic propellants in space

It was demonstrated that cryogenic propellants can be stored unvented in space long enough to accomplish a Saturn orbiter mission after 1,200-day coast. The thermal design of a hydrogen-fluorine rocket stage was carried out, and the hydrogen tank, its support structure, and thermal protection system were tested in a vacuum chamber. Heat transfer rates of approximately 23 W were measured in tests to simulate the near-Earth portion of the mission. Tests to simulate the majority of the time the vehicle would be in deep space and sun-oriented resulted in a heat transfer rate of 0.11 W.

Excimer lasers

A theoretical and experimental investigation into the possibility of achieving CW discharge pumped excimer laser oscillation is reported. Detailed theoretical modeling of capillary discharge pumping of the XeF and KXe and K2 excimer systems was carried out which predicted the required discharge parameters for reaching laser threshold on these systems. Capillary discharge pumping of the XeF excimer system was investigated experimentally. The experiments revealed a lower excimer level population density than predicted theoretically by about an order of magnitude. The experiments also revealed a fluorine consumption problem in the discharge in agreement with theory.

Some studies on a solid state sulfur probe for coal gasification systems

Measurements on the solid electrolyte cell (Ar + H(2) + H(2)S/CaS + CaF(2) + (Pt)//CaF(2)//(Pt) + CaF(2) + CaS/H(2) + H(2)+Ar) show that the emf of the cell is directly related to the difference in sulfur potentials established at the Ar + H(2) + H(2)S/electrode interfaces. The electrodes convert the sulfur potential gradient across the calcium fluoride electrolyte into an equivalent fluorine potential gradient. Response time of the probe varies from approximately 9 hr at 990 K to 2.5 hr at 1225 K. The conversion of calcium sulfide and/or calcium fluoride into calcium oxide is not a problem anticipated in commercial coal gasification systems. Suggestions are presented for improving the cell for such commercial applications.

Characterization of lunar nitrogen components

Rocks of known and disparate cosmic-ray ages are analyzed to find the spallation production rate of N-15. A soil breccia of known formation age was analyzed for its bearing on the antiquity of the isotopically light component. Further stepwise heating analysis of soils shed further light on occurrences of the components. Lunar soil samples were etched slightly by fluorine, revealing significant differences in isotopic ratios between carbon on grain surfaces and bulk carbon; the surface carbon is not retained during agglutinate formation. Etching revealed that about 25% of the total nitrogen resides on the surface of grains; the nitrogen is isotopically heavy. Etching also revealed about 50% of helium in soils residing below the readily etched outermost 1% of soil grain surfaces.

Forbidden lines of the solar corona and transition zone - 975-3000 A

Forbidden lines characteristic of plasmas at temperatures of 50,000 to 3 million K are observed in ATM UV spectra. Identifications, accurate wavelengths, ionization classes, intensities, and half-widths are presented. Coronal blends with He II at 1640 A are noted. Variations in nonthermal velocities with limb distance are observed. Doppler shifts in the coronal lines observed on the disk may be related to the solar wind. The coincidence of two lines with F IV(3P-5S) is evidence for atomic fluorine in the sun.

Optical and electrical properties of ion beam textured Kapton and Teflon

An electron bombardment argon ion source was used to ion etch polyimide (Kapton) and fluorinated ethylene, FEP (Teflon). Samples of polyimide and FEP were exposed to (0.5-1.0) keV Ar ions at ion current densities of (1.0-1/8) mA/sq cm for various exposure times. Changes in the optical and electrical properties of the samples were used to characterize the exposure. Spectral reflectance and transmittance measurements were made between 0.33 and 2.16 micron m using an integrating sphere after each exposure. From these measurements, values of solar absorptance were obtained. Total emittance measurements were also recorded for some samples. Surface resistivity was used to determine changes in the electrical conductivity of the etched samples. A scanning electron microscope recorded surface structure after exposure. Spectral optical data, resistivity measurements, calculated absorptance and emittance measurements are presented along with photomicrographs of the surface structure for the various exposures to Ar ions.

Study of the lubricant properties of carbon nonfluoride: (CF subx) subn

Friction and wear tests were performed with rubbed carbon monofluorides derived from different types of carbon. Best results were given by fluorated artificial graphite and coke. The coefficient of friction is practically independent of the fluorine-to-carbon ratio x where 0 x 1, but wear decreases by a factor of 6 as x tends toward 1. For a range of variation of the severity factor (PV) expressed in Newtons/cm. sec (where P is the average pressure and V the velocity) contained between 1,000 and 200,000, the wear measured with carbon monofluoride is significantly lower than that obtained with MoS2. A transfer film or third body which protects the surfaces is formed with carbon monofluoride, and beyond 400 C, thick and fragile oxide coatings are also formed.

Excimer lasers

The results of a two-year investigation into the possibility of developing continuous wave excimer lasers are reported. The program included the evaluation and selection of candidate molecular systems and discharge pumping techniques. The K Ar/K2 excimer dimer molecules and the xenon fluoride excimer molecule were selected for study; each used a transverse and capillary discharges pumping technique. Experimental and theoretical studies of each of the two discharge techniques applied to each of the two molecular systems are reported. Discharge stability and fluorine consumption were found to be the principle impediments to extending the XeF excimer laser into the continuous wave regime. Potassium vapor handling problems were the principal difficulty in achieving laser action on the K Ar/K2 system. Of the four molecular systems and pumping techniques explored, the capillary discharge pumped K Ar/K2 system appears to be the most likely candidate for demonstrating continuous wave excimer laser action primarily because of its predicted lower pumping threshold and a demonstrated discharge stability advantage.

Optical and electrical properties of ion beam textured Kapton and Teflon

Results are given for ion beam texturing of polyimide (Kapton) and fluorinated ethylene propylene (Teflon) by means of a 30-cm diam electron bombardment argon ion source. Ion beam-textured Kapton and Teflon surfaces are evaluated for various beam energies, current densities, and exposure times. The optical properties and sheet resistance are measured after each exposure. Provided in the paper are optical spectral data, resistivity measurements, calculated absorptance and emittance measurements, and surface structure SEM micrographs for various exposures to argon ions. It is found that Kapton becomes conducting and Teflon nonconducting when ion beam-textured. Textured Kapton exhibits large changes in the transmittance and solar absorptance, but only slight changes in reflectance. Surface texturing of Teflon may allow better adherence of subsequent sputtered metallic films for a high absorptance value. The results are valuable in spacecraft charging applications.

A multiple pulse zero crossing NMR technique, and its application to F-19 chemical shift measurements in solids

A simple multiple-pulse 'zero crossing technique' for accurately determining the first moment of a solid-state NMR spectrum is introduced. This technique was applied to obtain the F-19 chemical shift versus pressure curves up to 5 kbar for single crystals of CaF2 (0.29 + or - 0.02 ppm/kbar) and BaF2 (0.62 + or - 0.05 ppm/kbar). Results at ambient temperature and pressure are also reported for a number of other fluorine compounds. Because of its high data rate, this technique is potentially several orders of magnitude more sensitive than similar CW methods.

Real-time and accelerated outdoor endurance testing of solar cells

Materials for solar-cell module construction have been studied on the basis of limited real-time outdoor exposure evaluations. The materials tested included transmission samples, sub-modules, and actual solar cells. The results suggest that glass, fluorinated ethylene propylene, and perfluoroalkoxy are good materials for the covering or encapsulation of solar-cell modules. In all cases, dirt accumulation and cleanability are important factors.

Ion chromatographic determination of sulfur in fuels

The sulfur content of fuels was determined using an ion chromatograph to measure the sulfate produced by a modified Parr bomb oxidation. Standard Reference Materials from the National Bureau of Standards, of approximately 0.2 + or - 0.004% sulfur, were analyzed resulting in a standard deviation no greater than 0.008. The ion chromatographic method can be applied to conventional fuels as well as shale-oil derived fuels. Other acid forming elements, such as fluorine, chlorine and nitrogen could be determined at the same time, provided that these elements have reached a suitable ionic state during the oxidation of the fuel.

Method of making bearing materials

A method is described for making a composite material which provides low friction surfaces for materials in rolling or sliding contact. The composite material which is self-lubricating and oxidation resistant up to and in excess of about 930 C is comprised of a metal component which lends strength and elasticity to the structure and a fluorine salt component which provides oxidation protection to the metal but may also enhance the lubrication qualities of the composite.
