LSA Large Area Silicon Sheet Task Continuous Liquid Feed Czochralski Growth

A process for the continuous growth of crystals by the Czochralski method, suitable for producing single silicon crystals for use in solar cells was studied. Continuous growth is the growth of 100 Kg of single silicon crystals, 10 cm in diameter, from one container. A furnace with continuous liquid replenishment of the growth crucible, accomplished by a melt-down system and a liquid transfer mechanism, with associated automatic feedback controls was developed. Elements of the transfer system were further developed and tested during actual transfer runs. Considerable simplification of the heating element of the transfer tube was achieved. Accuracy and reliability of the temperature sensor, which is part of the power input control system for the transfer tube, was improved. Electrical and thermal effectiveness were increased while assembly of the transfer tube system was further simplified.

Antenna feed for linear and circular polarization

Antenna system ransmits linearly-polarized microwave radio signal, yet circularly-polarized incoming signal is received without polarization-mismatch losses. Network uses only hybrid junctions, diplexer, and four-probe antenna; no waveguide switches are required. Other circuit arrangements are possible, using additional transmitters and receivers.

Remote manipulator with force feed-back

Controller for remote manipulators gives user "feel" for forces required to lift, slide, turn, and otherwise handle objects. Because operator experiences sensations similar to those he would perceive if he handled objects directly, he needs much less skill and training for manipulator than for one with force feedback. It was developed to handle hazardous materials, such as radioactive substances, explosives, or corrosive chemicals. Other possible uses include tracking moving objects, vehicle control, and human interaction with computers (for example, via three dimensional display of computer model).

Kilovolt vacuum feed through is less noisy

Electrical feedthrough connects both low-voltage and high-voltage signals between cryogenic environment and "outside world." Developed for cooled germanium gamma-ray detector, feedthrough has especially low capacitance and low sensitivity to microphonic noise. Its high-voltage lead is free of corona discharge and electrical breakdown to at least 5 kV.

Gravity-Feed Growth of Silicon Ribbon

In inverted Stepanov apparatus, silicon is melted in vee-shaped crucible that has long narrow slot at bottom of vee. Molten silicon flows from slot at a rate controlled by fluid pressure. As it emerges, it cools and solidifies to form a continuous ribbon. To eliminate surface-tension effects, crucible walls are made of a material that liquid silicon does not wet.

Care, feeding, and use of charge-coupled device /CCD/ imagers at Palomar observatory

The paper describes the optical, mechanical, and electronic properties of the TI and RCA CCDs which have been applied to two-dimensional photometry and spectroscopy at Palomar. The drive, processing, and recording techniques are also discussed, and consideration is given to a focal conversion optical system, the Prime Focus Universal Extragalactic Instrument (PFUEI), which is used to more optimally match the Hale 5 meter plate scale. Calibration and data analysis are also examined.

Feed system design and experimental results in the uhf model study for the proposed Urbana phased array

The effects of atmospheric turbulence and the basis for the coherent scatter radar techniques are discussed. The reasons are given for upgrading the Radar system to a larger steerable array. Phase array theory pertinent to the system design is reviewed, along with approximations for maximum directive gain and blind angles due to mutual coupling. The methods and construction techniques employed in the UHF model study are explained. The antenna range is described, with a block diagram for the mode of operation used.

Preliminary design of 19-element feed cluster for a large F/D reflector antenna

The design of a low sidelobe 19 element microstrip cluster and its distribution network is described. The problem of spillover illumination of an adjacent reflector in a multiple aperture reflector system is addressed. A practical implementation of the array is presented which requires only one printed circuit board for the distribution network with the potential for being easily tailored to a wide range of excitation distributions.

Nutritional Criteria for Military Rations and Effects of Prolonged Feeding on Acceptability

Broad nutritional policies for operational rations are designed to insure that the nutritional content of the rations served will sustain combat effectiveness. Concern exists that these rations, although nutritionally complete, would become monotonous because of limited variety causing nutrient intake to decrease and body weight losses to occur with adverse effects on morale and combat effectiveness. Whenever possible, troops are now fed one or two hot meals per day containing fresh foods and a much greater variety of foods than are available in packaged rations. A laboratory test was conducted with student volunteers and the results are discussed.

Supersonic flow with feeding of energy

The present work discusses the results of some experimental studies on the possibility of attenuating shock waves in a supersonic flow. The shock waves were formed by an external source of electrical energy. An electromechanical method is described that permits partial recovery of the expended energy.

Analysis of an infinite array of rectangular microstrip patches with idealized probe feeds

A solution is presented to the problem of an infinite array of microstrip patches fed by idealized current probes. The input reflection coefficient is calculated versus scan angle in an arbitrary scan plane, and the effects of substrate parameters and grid spacing are considered. It is pointed out that even when a Galerkin method is used the impedance matrix is not symmetric due to phasing through a unit cell, as required for scanning. The mechanism by which scan blindness can occur is discussed. Measurement results are presented for the reflection coefficient magnitude variation with angle for E-plane, H-plane, and D-plane scans, for various substrate parameters. Measured results from waveguide simulators are also presented, and the scan blindness phenomenon is observed and discussed in terms of forced surface waves and a modified grating lobe diagram.

A prototype DSN X/S-band feed: Model 3 development

The development of a prototype X/S-band common aperture Cassegrain feedhorn for Deep Space Network (DSN) use is discussed. A Model 3 combiner has been developed to increase S-band bandwidth to include the Highly Elliptical Earth Orbiter band from 2025 to 2110 MHz, and to provide a 400-kW CW S-band uplink and a possible planetary radar band near 2320 MHz. The combiner uses eight S-band waveguide injection slots arranged in four pairs. The problems of this design geometry associated with rejection filtering and X/S-band matching are discussed.

Fragmented molecular complexes: The role of the magnetic field in feeding internal supersonic motions

A hierarchical structure for molecular complexes in their cold phase i.e., preceeding the formation of massive stars, was derived from extensive large scale CO(13)(J=1=0) observations: the mass is found to be distributed into virialized clouds which fill only a very low fraction approx. 01 of the volume of the complex and are supported against gravity by internal supersonic motions. An efficient mechanism was found to transfer kinetic energy from the orbital motions of the clouds to their internal random motions. The large perturbations of the magnetic field induced at the cloud boundaries by their interactions with their neighbors generate systems of hydromagnetic waves trapped inside the clouds. The magnetic field lines being closely coupled to the gas at the densities which prevail in the bulk of the clouds volume, internal velocity dispersion is thus generated. Some conclusions derived from this data are given.

Potential propellant storage and feed systems for space station resistojet propulsion options

The resistojet system has been defined as part of the baseline propulsion system for the initial Operating Capability Space Station. The resistojet propulsion module will perform a reboost function using a wide variety of fluids as propellants. There are many optional propellants and propellant combinations for use in the resistojet including (but not limited to): hydrazine, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, and methane. Many different types of propulsion systems have flown or have been conceptualized that may have application for use with resistojets. This paper describes and compares representative examples of these systems that may provide a basis for space station resistojet system design.

How to feed a spacecraft

The uplink process between ground computers and the spacecraft computer is examined. Data is uplinked to a spacecraft by a load (a sequence of preplanned commands) or by real-time commands; the differences between these two types of uplinks are discussed. The sequencing of a load involves: (1) request generation, (2) request integration, (3) reference generation, and (4) transmitting the load. The functions of each of the sequencing steps are described. The development of new sequencing methods using expert systems and AI is being studied. A symbolic processing software which has the ability to transmit data typed into a computer in English was developed. Consideration is given to the composition, capabilities of the parser, and application of the symbolic processing software to the Comet Renedezvous Asteroid Flyby spacecraft.
