Further evidence is presented to show that the interpretation of some Ogo 6 retarding potential analyzer (RPA) results in terms of ambient Fe+ ions is correct. The Fe+ ions are observed only within dip latitudes of plus or minus 30 deg, and the reason for this latitudinal specificity is discussed in terms of a low-altitude source region and F region diffusion and electrodynamic drift. It is shown that the polarization field associated with the equatorial electrojet will raise ions to 160 km out of a chemical source region below 100 km but it will do so only in a narrow region centered on the dip equator. Subsequent vertical ExB drift, coupled with motions along the magnetic fields, can move the ions to greater heights and greater latitudes. There should be a resultant fountain of metallic ions rising near the equator that subsequently descends back to the E and D layers at tropical latitudes.
An investigation pertaining to the development of life prediction methods for materials subjected to high temperature creep/fatigue conditions is presented. High frequency (13.4 kHz) fatigue data were measured at 1400 F on specimens of the nickel-based alloy Udimet 700. Tests were conducted on the virgin material, as well as on specimens which had received prior exposures to high temperature, fatigue, and creep.
Description of the system design of an RFI measurement experiment regarding optimal sharing of the 5.925- to 6.425-GHz frequency band between the ATS-F synchronous satellite and terrestrial telecommunication systems. The parametric measurements made will include transmitted and received power levels, propagation-path loss and variations as a function of range, elevation angle, RF polarization, and geographical location of interference sources. The technical objectives of the C-band RFI experiment are outlined, a functional diagram of the total system for the RFI measurement experiment is presented, and the design features of the receiver RF and IF circuits, the filters and detectors, and the computer control are summarized. A basic RFI measurement plan is presented which defines and briefly states the measurement procedure, which involves a number of different measurement modes, each of which is described in detail.
The inner coronal continuum has been observed and measured below 2220 A on the slitless spectra obtained by Speer et al. (1970) at the March 7, 1970 eclipse. These observations set some constraints on the brightness of the inner F corona and hence on the scattering efficiency of the inner interplanetary dust cloud particles in the far ultraviolet. They neither confirm nor reject the possibility that the inner dust cloud has the same sharp upturn in scattering efficiency below 2220 A observed in the zodiacal light and in the interstellar medium.
The technical objectives of the uplink interference tests and measurements to be performed during this experiment are set forth as the determination of the integrated interference power from all 6-GHz terrestrial sources sharing the common carrier band with the RF field of view of the ATS-F satellite; the establishment of practical limits of receiver antenna gain-to-noise temperature ratios for satellites sharing the common 6-GHz carrier band; and the determination of the geographical and frequency distribution of 6-GHz terrestrial sources sharing the common carrier band. A brief description of the RF interference measurement system with some details on its hardware and subsystems is included. The performance characteristics of the mission and a measurement program are discussed.
