Systems Analysis and Engineering of Biofuel Production in Chromochloris zofingiensis , an Emerging Model Green Alga

As a core component of a sustainable bioeconomy, microalgae have the potential to become a major source of biofuels and bioproducts. These photosynthetic microbes utilize solar energy, grow quickly, consume CO 2 , and can be cultivated on non-arable land. However, there are presently considerable practical limitations in the photosynthetic production of biofuels from microalgae, resulting in low productivity and high costs. Algae are a strikingly diverse group and understudied algae can reveal new opportunities for biofuels. Integrative systems biology and engineering of emerging model systems are needed to expand the possibilities of microbial production of biofuels and bioproducts. Our long-term goal is to design and engineer high-level production of biofuel precursors in microalgae.

Emergent Nucleosynthesis from a 1.2 s Long Simulation of a Black Hole Accretion Disk

We simulate a black hole accretion disk system with full-transport general relativistic neutrino radiation magnetohydrodynamics for 1.2 s. This system is likely to form after the merger of two compact objects and is thought to be a robust site of r-process nucleosynthesis. We consider the case of a black hole accretion disk arising from the merger of two neutron stars. Our simulation time coincides with the nucleosynthesis timescale of the r-process (~1 s). Because these simulations are time-consuming, it is common practice to run for a “short” duration of approximately 0.1–0.3 s. We analyze the nucleosynthetic outflow from this system and compare the results of stopping at 0.12 and 1.2 s. We find that the addition of mass ejected in the longer simulation as well as more favorable thermodynamic conditions from emergent viscous ejecta greatly impacts the nucleosynthetic outcome. We quantify the error in nucleosynthetic outcomes between short and long cuts.

Field Evaluation of the Caney Shale as an Emerging Unconventional Play, Southern Oklahoma

The Mississippian-age Caney Shale is an emerging unconventional oil and gas (UOG) resource play in the southern Midcontinent and is prospective in the Anadarko, Ardmore, Marietta and western Arkoma basins. This play is enigmatic in that time equivalent Fayetteville Shale in the eastern Arkoma basin and Barnett Shale in the Ft. Worth Basin are major unconventional plays, whereas Caney Shale production is sparse and unpredictable (Cardott, 2017). In the Anadarko, Ardmore and Marietta basins, the Caney Shale is in the oil window, but its resource potential has not been adequately assessed. The Caney reservoir is about 60-300 m thick, is rich in total organic carbon, contains a large oil resource base, and has a strong natural gas drive; however, development has been hampered by high clay content and reactivity of the formation with water. The main objective of this initial four-year research project was to address these issues by establishing a Caney Shale Field Laboratory in the Ardmore Basin of southern Oklahoma to (a) conduct a comprehensive field characterization (b) perform field experiments, and (c) validate cost-effective technologies that will lead to a comprehensive and efficient development strategy plan for Caney Shale.

Convergence of Emerging Technologies - EAGL Test Information

The Emergency Automatic Gunshot Detection and Lockdown (EAGL) system provides automatic, autonomous, and timely gunshot detection in both indoor and outdoor environments. This system uses both wired and wireless devices. Self-contained wireless EAGL sensors passively “listen” for gunshot events. These devices also perform a single, daily supervisory heartbeat (HB) function to include a device self-check with reporting capability. Transmissions are received by an assigned EAGL Gateway, which translates the RF sensor data to a PoE network format solely for use by the EAGL system server. The server then performs additional processes after data receipt, which include but are not limited to: event validation and logging, GUI presentation, notifications, and other independent operations.

Rapid T cell engineering to counter emerging threats

There is a critical need for new approaches to effectively counter emerging pathogens, especially those which do not respond to antibodies or antibiotics. T cells represent an essential element of native immune response in many of the deadliest pathogens: controlling T cell reactivity and behavior would allow for countermeasures for currently untreatable diseases from cancer to coronaviruses, especially if using a patient’s own T cells (autologous) where no host rejection will occur. However, current methods for modifying T cells, e.g., FDA-approved chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR) approaches, require genetic manipulation and expansion which can take weeks to generate.

NFPA Distributed Energy Resources Safety Training (DERST) For Emergency Responders

The National Fire Protection Association, with support from the Department of Energy, executed a multi-year initiative to develop, enhance, and disseminate Distributed Energy Resources Safety Training (DERST) tools for U.S. emergency responders. As Distributed Energy Resources (DER)—such as solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicles (EVs), and associated infrastructure—become increasingly prevalent, the NFPA identified a critical need for up-to-date standardized, accessible, and effective safety training tailored for the fire service and related public safety professionals. The project delivered a comprehensive suite of educational resources to improve responders’ abilities to safely manage DER-related incidents. This included: • Revised Modular Training Courses: Updated classroom-based DER safety courses, now modular and accessible nationwide through fire academies and the North American Fire Training Directors (NAFTD) network. • Live Burn Testing & Research: A full-scale controlled burn of a DER-equipped residential structure provided real-world data and insights, forming the basis for updated best practices. • A Gamified Simulation Tool – Firefighters Incident Response Simulation Tool (FIRST): A first-of-its-kind, multiplayer, scenario-based simulation using the Unreal Engine 5.0 to train responders in a realistic virtual, multi-DER incident environment. • Field Familiarization Software Tools & Prop Guide: Digital DER field familiarization evolutions software guide and a prop development manual to support field-based DER training exercises, enhancing responders' hands-on familiarity with DER infrastructure and collaboration on virtual incident responses. • National Dissemination Strategy: Strategic partnerships with NAFTD, Vector Solutions, and others enabled wide-scale distribution, with over 5,000 departments accessing resources and 1,100+ departments adopting the simulator in the first seven months. Also provided a web portal for easy access to all training and simulation programs developed under this grant for the U.S. responder community. Key findings from the project—particularly from the burn test—led to paradigm shifts in fire response tactics. For example, traditional approaches to garage fires may be hazardous if DERs are present, due to explosive off gassing and thermal runaway risks. The new training emphasizes scene assessment, stand-off approaches, thermal imaging verification, and careful post-incident cooling of DER components to prevent reignition. This initiative has had a significant national impact, raising awareness, enhancing preparedness, and supporting safer DER incident response practices. Significant engagement from the media, public safety organizations, and PBS coverage has further amplified the reach and adoption of NFPA’s DER safety training, tools, and simulations.

Emerging Technologies Review: Pumped Storage Hydropower

The Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) has tasked Pacific Northwest National Laboratory with investigating emerging technologies to inform the Air Force’s understanding of the technology and to guide key considerations for implementing technologies that are resilient and alternative sources to the traditional methods used in the Air Force today. This report explores pumped storage hydropower. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) currently provides 93% of grid-scale storage capacity (MW) and 99% of electrical energy storage (MWh) in the United States. PSH exploits the potential energy that can be stored by pumping water to higher elevations or pressures to be dispatched when needed. In its simplest form, PSH uses energy to pump water to an upper reservoir for storage, then releases this water through a turbine and generator into a lower reservoir when needed for energy generation. This report provides a thorough technology description, technical considerations, siting considerations, economic/funding considerations associated with the technology. A Regulatory overview and risks associated with the technology are also included in the report.

Radiological Data Assessment Guidance for Emergency Response

This document provides guidance on how to apply data quality practices to measurements and information collected during the response and recovery to a radiological release. The process of applying data quality practices to measurement data is called data assessment. All data quality practices applied during a radiological incident response must balance the rigorous and time-consuming process normally applied to, for example, site decommissioning and decontamination, with the time- and resource-constraints present during emergency response. The guidance in this document presents the application of data quality practices for data assessment in a graded approach, where the recommended rigor increases as the response continues through its phases and as time and resource constraints relax.

Simulation Study of Monoenergetic Photon Source LiDAR System Performance for Emergency Response Applications

The following report summarizes the results of a Monte Carlo simulation and modeling study of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBL) Monoenergetic Photon Source (MPS) as part of a high-energy LiDAR system for use in emergency response applications. A set of image quality indicators (IQI) and nonsensitive phantoms or generalized surrogates for search targets have been identified for use in the planned measurement campaign at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center toward the end FY2023. These items were modeled and the time-of-flight (TOF) spectral responses following irradiation were calculated for a set of varying operating conditions. The goal of this study was to both predict the LiDAR system performance as well as determine if minor modifications to the IQI and phantom designs were required before fabrication. It was found that the IQI and target designs both overlap and extend towards the limit of performance of the system and are thus suitable for the final project measurement campaign.

Next Generation Feedstocks for the Emerging Bioeconomy

The Next Generation Feedstocks for the Emerging Bioeconomy project, led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was designed to accelerate the development of sustainable, cost-competitive biomass feedstocks that can be grown on marginal lands, which are not suitable for row crop production. By focusing on advanced bioenergy-type switchgrass cultivars and related perennial grasses, the project directly supported the U.S. “Billion-Ton Vision,” which aims to expand biomass production to displace fossil fuels while providing environmental and economic benefits. The project improved understanding of perennial bioenergy crop performance at a large scale in marginal environments.

The emergent photophysics and photochemistry of molecular polaritons: a theoretical and computational investigation (Final Technical Report)

When molecules are placed between closely spaced mirrors, they interact strongly with the photons that are trapped between them, generating new quantum states which are no longer exclusively material nor photonic alone, but rather, coherent superpositions of both. These hybrid states are known as molecular polaritons, given that they arise from the strong interaction between the electric field of light and the electrical polarization of the molecules. Recently, experimental advances in nano‐ and microfabrication of molecular polariton architectures have successfully demonstrated their feasibility to control the rate and outcome of a certain class of chemical reactions in condensed phases. Importantly, these reactions proceed in strongly dissipative environments such as liquid solvents and lossy mirrors that allow for photons to escape from their confinement. The purpose of this research is to formulate quantum mechanical theories and computational tools that can elucidate the origin of these intriguing phenomena and simultaneously predict capabilities that this new generation of molecular materials affords. Attention is placed on harnessing polaritons to carry out photophysics and photochemistry that challenge currently existing paradigms, such as the optimization of energy conversion processes in organic solar cell or light‐emitting devices, or unconventional phenomena such as long‐range excitation energy transfer, remote control of chemical reactions, and a new quantum mechanical regime of chemical reactivity due to wavefunction overlaps amongst a large number of molecular polaritons (Bose condensation). This research explores a frontier of Chemistry and Physics where electrons, vibrations, and photons interact strongly with each other to generate emergent behavior that can be creatively exploited to address contemporary challenges in Basic Energy Sciences.
