La Jerarquia de Mitigacion (Spanish)

The mitigation hierarchy is a widely used framework to inform conservation decisions. The hierarchy offers a structured set of steps for how projects can lessen negative impacts or lead to an increase in biodiversity. In its simplest form, the mitigation hierarchy includes three stages: (1) avoid creating impacts from the outset, (2) minimize the impacts that cannot be avoided, and (3) compensate for or offset the impacts that cannot be minimized. Proper application of the hierarchy should decrease impacts of the project over time, such that most of the impact is alleviated through avoidance, leaving a modest amount remaining to minimize, and only a residual to compensate. In practice, avoidance should be prioritized and can be a cost-effective means of mitigation. Whereas compensation should be considered the lowest priority and should only be applied in situations in which the previous mitigation steps were unable to fully alleviate undesirable impacts. This is the Spanish translation of NREL/FS-5000-85363, "The Mitigation Hierarchy."

De-Risking Large-Scale PV Systems Through Data Analytics

Large-scale photovoltaic system performance analysis is being conducted within the US Department of Energy's-sponsored PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative. This collaboration with commercial PV system owners collects and evaluates PV field performance data, and provides reports on aggregated results. Drawing on over 2200 sites across the US and over 24,000 separate PV inverters we have collected in excess of 8.3 gigawatts (GW) of performance data, representing 6-7% of the entire US installed PV capacity. A mixture of utility-scale and large commercial systems are represented, averaging 4.1 megawatts (MW) in size and 5 years in age. Initial results show average system degradation rates at -0.75% / year, which is slightly higher than historically reported module-level values of -0.5%/year. We also found that the availability of systems averaged 97.7%, which is lower than the typical 99% uptime assumed by many project economic forecasts. Given these results, we compared monthly performance with expected production values, based on satellite weather data and a simple PVWatts performance model. We found that systems were performing within 10% of monthly expectation over 90% of the time, with a fleet average vs expected monthly value of 0.994. We also evaluated the impact of extreme weather events on system performance, and found a range of short-term and longer-term performance effects ranging from grid outage, system downtime, module damage and accelerated long-term degradation rate.

TelemeTrak Final Technical Report – Award DE-SC0022722

We developed a browser-based simulation tool to evaluate whether buffering can be advantageous in various climate zones. This tool leverages the Amazon cloud services to process hundreds of simulations in a parametric sweep. This tool, still under development, will ultimately be usable by installers to determine exactly how much storage of what type to include.

Guide de base pour l'energie solaire hors reseau en Haiti

This training lends insight into key information and concepts for off-grid solar in Haiti, building foundational knowledge and an ability to catalyze interest in off-grid solar for rural electrification in Haiti. This self-paced course is offered in both English and French and covers a variety of topics related to energy access in Haiti including off-grid solar products, market potential in Haiti, supply and demand side considerations, system design, installation and maintenance, off-grid solar business models, financial modeling, gender and energy access, productive use of energy, and climate adaptation. The training is intended for university students, government partners, NGOs, funders, development partners, professionals, and more. No prior knowledge of off-grid solar or Haiti is required to benefit from this training. See NREL/PR-7A40-88999 for the English translation of this document.

Demonstrate and De-Risk an Internally Lined Tank Design for Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage Benefitting CSP and Nuclear-Energy Sectors

The LIMOSA project extends the Gen3 CSP "Liquid Pathway" project to evaluate 720 degrees C thermal energy storage based on molten chloride salts. While SETO selected the Particle Pathway for Gen3 demonstration, LIMOSA was created to resolve a major risk factor with molten chloride salts - the design of the salt storage tank. The project team designed and assembled a test system leveraging experience from Oak Ridge National Lab and the Liquid Pathway Phases 1 and 2. The key innovation in the project is development of a graphite-foil barrier to protect insulation from salt intrusion and wetting.

Avancando na Transicao Energetica: Desafios e Estrategias para a Implantacao Sustentavel de FV

As the world embarks on an ambitious journey towards global decarbonization, the spotlight turns to photovoltaic (PV) technology as a cornerstone for sustainable energy solutions. This talk delves into the current status and projections of PV for the World, US and Brasil, and the necessary considerations to do this increase in manufacturing and deployment sustainably. With the projected scale of deployment, the industry faces significant challenges related to material demand and the management of PV modules at their end of life. The principles of the Circular Economy (CE) and its associated R-Actions - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, among others - present a promising framework to address these challenges by mitigating end-of-life management and material sourcing concerns. However, traditional CE metrics, often focused solely on mass, fall short by excluding vital energy flow considerations. In this talk, we will highlight how various metrics are needed to understand sustainable PV solutions, how continuing the search for increased efficiency can significantly reduce material demands and enhance energy metrics, while strategies around material circularity and module lifetime and reliability improvements will offer substantial reductions in both material and energy demands.
