Extensive ground and air data were collected on 3 May 1979. These data are being processed. We are awaiting quick look imagery for this date. If spacecraft data looks good, we will order CCT's and proceed with the analysis. There are no author-identified significant results in this report.
Investigations were carried out on a horizontal tail assembly made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the Alpha Jet. The possibility of obtaining a leading edge nose design lighter but not more expensive than a metal version was studied. An important consideration was sufficient resistance of the leading edge against impact of stones and hailstones combined with high degree of stiffness. The improvement of energy reception characteristics of the materials through suitable laminate design was considered. Since certain defects occur in structural components, the effects of such defects on the characteristics of the parts were also studied.
The author has identified the following significant results. HCMM data analysis shows some mesoscale features which were previously expected to occur: summer coastal upwellings in the Gulf of Lions, tidal fronts bordering the English Channel, and cooler surface waters at the continental shelf break. The analysis of the spectral variance density spectra show that the interpretation of the data usually is limited by the HCMM radiometric performance (noise levels) at wavenumbers below 5 km in the oceanic areas; from this analysis it may also be concluded that a decrease of the radiometric noise level down to 0.1 k against an increase of the ground resolution up to 2 km would give a better optimum of the radiometric performances in the oceanic areas. HCMM data appear to be useful for analysis of the sea surface temperature field, particularly in the very coastal area by profiting from the ground resolution of 500 m.

The author has identified the following significant results. Fine orogenic sediments, not detectable on the images recorded within the visible wavelength region, can be clearly recognized on all night IR-images. The area of glaciation in the northern foreland of the Alps can be partially identified on the basis of night-IR data. The terminal moraine of various glacierization phases can be mapped and the relative dry and unsorted moraine material consisting of crystalline components can be located through the vegetation cover. The eastern part of the glaciation area can be traced because of reverse temperature effect. In addition to the upper Bavarian lakes, the night-IR images clearly indicate the distribution of high soil moisture areas such as swamps and bogs. The geological border of the upper fresh water molasse in the northern part of the basin north of Munich is identifiable on night IR-imagery. Drift peat areas can be located on day-IR images of the dry season of the year.
The effects of different regimens of treatment following prolonged hypokinesia were studied in order to determine the most effective program. The types of programs considered were passive means, consisting of physical therapy; active means, consisting of athletic training; and a combined program. In the first stage of the experiment, the effects of a 10 day period of hypokinesia were studied. It was determined that the restoration programs must address the problems of: (1) increasing defense function and general tone of the body; (2) restore orthostatic stability; and (3) increase general endurance. In later stages, groups of athletes and nonathletes underwent 30 day periods of hypokinesia. Restoration was carefully monitored for groups treated with the various regimens. It was determined that the most effective treatment was a comprehensive program of passive and active therapy.
Since 1970 DTNSRDC has been modifying NASTRAN to suite various Navy requirements. These modifications include capabilities as well as user conveniences and error corrections. The new features added to NASTRAN Level 17.5 are described. The subject areas of the additions include magnetostatics, piezoelectricity, fluid structure interactions, isoparametric finite elements, and shock design for shipboard equipment.
Results of trade studies comparing optimum pumped fluid and hybrid heat pipe/pumped fluid radiator designs are presented. Design variables considered in the system optimization analyses include transport fluid properties and Reynolds number, pump loop component reliabilities, micrometeoroid protection, heat pipe spacing, manifolding and flow routing in pumped fluid designs, transport tubing spacing and diameters, and radiator fin parameters. Criteria for evaluating candidate radiator system designs include mass, radiator area, and overall system reliability. The studies show advantages in constructing large systems from small independent subsystems with oversizing to account for subsystem failures. The optimum size and survivability of the subsystems are identified as a function of the radiator construction, the system heat rejection requirements, the mission duration, and the system reliability requirements.
Further digital processing of HCMM digital data was performed to extract the temperature from the day/night passes to calculate the apparent delta T in the Yerington, Nevada mine area. Further processing is needed to observe the atmospheric effect.
Tapes for day and night passes on May 16 and May 20, 1978 and a day pass on May 3, 1980 were processed. Results indicate that it is extremely difficult to locate a field of 9 pixel size and temperature data from the HCMM are consistently lower than temperatures measured with a scanner flown at low altitudes. The temperature differences between the satellite and aircraft data appear to be temperature dependent, being smaller at lower temperatures. Three data points are in the format (airc, HCMM) (12,9), (30,23), and (39,30). The linear equation for these three points is T sub HCMM = 0.778 T sub airc -0.33.
Progress in the processing of CCT's for both day and night passes for May 16 and 20, 1978 and a day pass on May 3, 1980 is reported.
The possibility of identifying ground surface material by measuring the surface temperature at two different and significant times of the day was investigated for the case of hypothetical island whose rocky surface contained no vegetation and consisted of dolomite, clay, and granite. The thermal dynamics of the soil surface during a day in which atmospheric conditions were average for a latitude of about 40 deg to 50 deg were numerically simulated. The line of separation between zones of different materials was delineated by the range of temperature variation. Results show that the difference between maximum and minimum value of the temperature of ground surface during the day is linked to the thermal inertia value of the material of which the rock is formed.
The experimental verification system for the production of silicon via the arc heater-sodium reduction of SiCl4 was designed, fabricated, installed, and operated. Each of the attendant subsystems was checked out and operated to insure performance requirements. These subsystems included: the arc heaters/reactor, cooling water system, gas system, power system, Control & Instrumentation system, Na injection system, SiCl4 injection system, effluent disposal system and gas burnoff system. Prior to introducing the reactants (Na and SiCl4) to the arc heater/reactor, a series of gas only-power tests was conducted to establish the operating parameters of the three arc heaters of the system. Following the successful completion of the gas only-power tests and the readiness tests of the sodium and SiCl4 injection systems, a shakedown test of the complete experimental verification system was conducted.
The integrated system was tested to determine the performance characteristics and limitations of the dual catalyst concept. The primary objective of the dual catalyst concept is to remove ammonia and other noxious substances in the gas phase and thereby eliminate the need for and current practice of chemically or electrochemically pretreating urine prior to distillation.
