WORKSHOP ON URBAN SCALE PROCESSES AND THEIR REPRESENTATION IN HIGH SPATIAL RESOLUTION EARTH SYSTEM MODELS

It is essential that numerical models used to study physics, chemistry, and biology affecting the Earth system at regional and global scales represent the effects of urban areas on climate and the effects of changing the climate on urban areas. At the same time, it is essential to develop state of the art, simple and accurate urban models to better understand the relevant processes and also toaddress issues related to urban security against the spectra of chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) hazards. Towards bringing these communities together, a 2.5-day international workshop was held at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in the Chicago area on May 22-24, 2019. This workshop brought together national and international experts to develop a roadmap for a better understanding of the issues associated with urban areas and at enhancing the capabilities of regional and global Earth System models (ESMs) in representing the atmospheric dynamics and chemistry, unique aspects of the biosphere and land use, and human dimensions of the urban environment. This workshop was especially important to those developing very high-resolution versions of regional and global models. The workshop also discussed existing datasets, including in situ and satellite observations, and the emerging smart city sensing technologies and their possible use in model development (e.g., the NSF-funded Array of Things network currently operating in Chicago and expanding to other cities).

Nitinol Electroslag Remelting: Initial Slag Study

Nitinol’s unique shape memory and super-elastic properties make it attractive for many applications in biomedical, automotive, aerospace, industrial refrigeration, and waste heat reclamation industries. The fatigue performance is limited however, by non-metallic inclusions (NMI) formed during the traditional VIM/VAR or multi-VAR process. ESR is a potential alternative melt process and is commonly used to refine ingot chemistry and enhance the metallurgical structure of many superalloys and specialty steels, but no study on ESR of Nitinol has been reported to date. The key to establishing a successful ESR process is selecting a compatible slag. In this study, several different slag chemistries are evaluated for their compatibility with Nitinol. One slag chemistry is chosen, along with a control, to produce four Nitinol ESR ingots. Pursuit of a novel slag chemistry for adequate Nitinol refinement is discussed.

Fabrication of films and coatings used to activate shear thickening, impact resistant electrolytes

A method of making a passively impact resistant composite electrolyte and separator layer includes providing a suspension composition including electrically non-conducting particles that enable shear thickening. The particles can have a polydispersity index of no greater than 0.1, an average particle size in a range of from 50 nm to 1 um, and an absolute zeta potential of greater than ±40 mV. A particle suspension solvent is provided for suspending the particles. The suspension composition is applied to a porous separator material. A portion of the particles and suspension solvent penetrate the pores and the remainder of the particles in the suspension composition are distributed across the surface of the separator material. The suspension solvent is evaporated from the separator material to provide a shear thickening particle loaded separator. A separator assembly and a passivated battery are also disclosed.

Rapid pyrolysis to form super ionic conducting lithium garnets

A method of preparing a lithium-ion conducting garnet via low-temperature solid-state synthesis is disclosed. The lithium-ion conducting garnet comprises a substantially phase pure aluminum-doped cubic lithium lanthanum zirconate (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 14 ). The method includes preparing nanoparticles comprising lanthanum zirconate (La 2 Zr 2 O 7 -np) via pyrolysis-mediated reaction of lanthanum nitrate (La(NO 3 ) 3 ) and zirconium nitrate (Zr(NO 3 ) 4 ). The method also includes pyrolyzing a solid-state mixture comprising the La 2 Zr 2 O 7 -np, lithium nitrate (LiNO 3 ), and aluminum nitrate (Al(NO 3 ) 3 ) to give the Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 14 and thereby prepare the lithium-ion conducting garnet. A lithium-ion conducting garnet prepared via the method is also disclosed.

Battery with shear thickening, impact resistant electrolytes

A battery includes an anode, a cathode, and a porous separator having a surface and percolating pores providing a porosity of from 20% to 80%. A passively impact resistant composite electrolyte includes an electrolyte and electrically non-conducting particles that enable shear thickening. The particles can have a polydispersity index of no greater than 0.1, an average particle size in a range of from 50 nm to 1 um, and an absolute zeta potential of greater than ±40 mV. The shear thickening enabling particles can be from 10 wt. % to 40 wt. % of the total weight of the separator and shear thickening particles. Between 20-40 wt. % of the shear thickening enabling particles are located in the pores of the separator.

Method of making a passively impact resistant battery

A method of making a passively impact resistant battery includes the steps of providing a porous separator material having pores and a surface, and providing a suspension composition including shear thickening enabling particles and a particle suspension solvent for suspending the shear thickening enabling particles. The shear thickening particles have a polydispersity index of no greater than 0.1, an average particle size of in a range of 50 nm to 1 um, and an absolute zeta potential of greater than ±40 mV. The suspension composition is applied to the separator material, wherein a portion of the particles and suspension solvent penetrate the pores. The suspension solvent is evaporated from the separator material. An anode layer and a cathode layer are applied. An electrolyte composition is applied between the anode layer and the cathode layer. The electrolyte composition includes an electrolyte solvent and an electrolyte salt.

The Importance of Inventory for Informing Waste Strategy - 20280

A waste inventory aims to present the best available information about the nature, quantity and location of radioactive wastes and materials at a facility, site or in a country. Quality inventory data is necessary for developing appropriate strategies and plans for managing radioactive wastes and materials, with high standards of protection for people and the environment. The inventory of wastes will change over time due to a wide range of technical, commercial or policy reasons, for example, if reactor lifetimes are extended, if decommissioning strategies change or if new technologies are introduced for managing waste. Inventory information can also improve as better waste characterisation data becomes available. At a facility or site level, good quality inventory data are needed to underpin decision making about the waste management options and to demonstrate compliance with the chosen treatment or disposal route. At a site and country level, knowledge of the inventory can drive the improvement to waste strategy; waste management asset and service planning; and implementation. (authors)
