Real-Time KMC Simulation of Vacancy-Mediated Intermixing in Au@Ag Octahedral Core–Cubic Shell Nanocrystals with Ab Initio-Guided Kinetics

Utilization of core–shell rather than monometallic nanocrystals (NCs) facilitates fine-tuning of NC properties for applications. However, compositional evolution via intermixing can degrade these properties prompting recent experimental studies. We develop an atomistic-level stochastic model for vacancy-mediated intermixing exploiting a formalism which allows incorporation at an ab initio density functional theory level of not just the thermodynamics of vacancy formation, but also relevant diffusion barriers for a vast number of possible local environments (in the core and in the shell, at the interface, and in the intermixed phase). This facilitates a predictive treatment and comprehensive understanding of intermixing on the relevant time scale (e.g., 10 1 –10 3 s). In contrast, previous modeling at the atomistic level utilized only unrealistic generic prescriptions of barriers or employed simplified continuum treatments. For Au@Ag octahedral core–cubic shell NCs, our modeling not only captures the experimentally observed rate or time scale for intermixing of ~100 s at 450 °C for 60 nm NCs, but also elucidates the underlying rate controlling processes and the effective intermixing barrier.

Abundance of 17 trace elements in carbonaceous chondrites.

Seventeen trace elements (Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, U, and Zn) were measured by neutron activation analysis in eight C1 samples (1 Alais, 3 Ivuna, 4 Orgueil and in three C2 samples (one each of Mighei, Murchison, Murray). The results show far less scatter than earlier literature data. The standard deviation of a single measurement from the mean of eight C1 samples lies between 2 and 14%, except for the following four elements: Au, Ag, Rb, and Br. The first two probably reflect contamination and sample heterogeneity, the last two, analytical error. Apparently C1 chondrites have a far more uniform composition than some authors have claimed.

Uncovering the Effects of Metal Contacts on Monolayer MoS 2

Metal contacts are a key limiter to the electronic performance of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor devices. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of contact interfaces between seven metals (Y, Sc, Ag, Al, Ti, Au, Ni, with work functions from 3.1 to 5.2 eV) and monolayer MoS 2 grown by chemical vapor deposition. We evaporate thin metal films onto MoS 2 and study the interfaces by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical characterization. We uncover that (1) ultrathin oxidized Al dopes MoS 2 n-type (>2 × 1012 cm –2 ) without degrading its mobility, (2) Ag, Au, and Ni deposition causes varying levels of damage to MoS 2 (e.g. broadening Raman E' peak from <3 to >6 cm –1 ), and (3) Ti, Sc, and Y react with MoS 2 . Reactive metals must be avoided in contacts to monolayer MoS 2 , but control studies reveal the reaction is mostly limited to the top layer of multilayer films. Finally, we find that (4) thin metals do not significantly strain MoS 2 , as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. These are important findings for metal contacts to MoS 2 and broadly applicable to many other 2D semiconductors.

Structural and physical properties of 99 complex bulk chalcogenides crystals using first-principles calculations

Chalcogenide semiconductors and glasses have many applications in the civil and military fields, especially in relation to their electronic, optical and mechanical properties for energy conversion and in enviormental materials. However, they are much less systemically studied and their fundamental physical properties for a large class chalcogenide semiconductors are rather scattered and incomplete. Here, we present a detailed study using well defined first-principles calculations on the electronic structure, interatomic bonding, optical, and mechanical properties for 99 bulk chalcogenides including thirteen of these crytals which have never been calculated. Due to their unique composition and structures, these 99 bulk chalcogenides are divided into two main groups. The first group contains 54 quaternary crystals with the structure composition (A2BCQ4) (A = Ag, Cu; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Mg, Sr, Ba; C = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se, Te), while the second group contains scattered ternary and quaternary chalcogenide crystals with a more diverse composition (AxByCzQn) (A = Ag, Cu, Ba, Cs, Li, Tl, K, Lu, Sr; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Ga, In, P, As, La, Lu, Pb, Cu, Ag; C = Si, Ge, Sn, As, Sb, Bi, Zr, Hf, Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te; x=1, 2, 3; y=0, 1, 2, 5; z=0, 1, 2 and n=3, 4, 5, 6, 9). Moreover, the total bond order density (TBOD) is used as a single quantum mechanical metric to characterize the internal cohesion of these crystals enabling us to correlate them with the calculated properties, especially their mechanical properties. This work provides a very large database for bulk chalcogenides crucial for the future theoretical and experimental studies, opening opportunities for study the properties and potential application of a wide variety of chalcogenides.

Structure of Odd-A Ag Isotopes Studied via Algebraic Approaches

The structure of the odd-A silver isotopes Ag 103–115 is discussed within the frame of the interacting boson–fermion model (IBFM). An overview of their key properties is presented, with a particular attention paid to the “ J -1 anomaly”, represented by an abnormal ordering of the lowest 7/2 + and 9/2 + states. By examining previously published data and newly performed calculations, it is demonstrated that the experimentally known level schemes and electromagnetic properties of Ag 103–115 can be reproduced well within IBFM-1 by using a consistent set of model parameters. The contribution of different single-particle orbitals to the structure of the lowest-lying excited nuclear states in Ag 103–115 is discussed. Given that the J-1 anomaly brings down the 7/2 + level from the j −3 multiplet to energies, which can be thermally populated in hot stellar environments, the importance of low-lying excited states in odd-A silver isotopes for astrophysical processes is outlined.

Time-Temperature-Precipitation Behavior in Al-Li Alloy 2195

Transmission electron microscopy was used to study time-temperature-precipitation (TTP) behavior in aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) 2195 alloy. Al-Li 2195 (nominally Al + 4 percent Cu + 1 percent Li + 0.3 percent Ag + 0.3 percent Mg + 0.1 percent Zr) was initially solutionized for 1 hr at 950 F and then stretched 3 percent. Heat treatments were conducted for up to 100 hr at temperatures ranging from 200 to 1,000 F. TTP diagrams were determined for both matrix and subgrain boundaries. Depending upon heat treatment conditions, precipitate phases (such as GP zone, theta'', theta', theta, delta', T1, TB, and T2) were found in the alloy. The TTP diagrams were applied as a guide to avoid T1 precipitation at subgrain boundaries, as part of an effort to improve the alloy's cryogenic fracture toughness (CFT). New understanding of TTP behavior was instrumental in the development of a two-step artificial aging treatment that significantly enhanced CFT in Al-Li 2195.

Human Health Countermeasures - Partial-Gravity Analogs Workshop

The experimental conditions that were deemed the most interesting by the HHC Element lead scientists are those permitting studies of the long-term effects of exposure to (a) chronic rotation when supine or in head down tilt (ground-based); and (b) long-radius centrifugation (space based). It is interesting to note that chronic ground based slow rotation room studies have not been performed since the 1960's, when the USA and USSR were investigating the potential use of AG for long-duration space missions. On the other hand, the other partial gravity analogs, i.e., parabolic flight, HUT, suspension, and short-radius centrifugation, have been regularly used in the last three decades (see review in Clément et al. 2015). Based on the workshop evaluations and the scores by the HHC scientific disciplines indicated in tables 3 and 4, simulation of partial G between 0 and 1 should be prioritized as follows: Priority 1. Chronic space-based partial-G analogs: a. Chronic space-based long-radius centrifugation. The ideal scenario would be chronic long-radius centrifugation of cells, animals and humans in a translational research approach - ideally beyond low earth orbit under deep space environmental effects and at various rotations - to obtain different G-effects. In this scenario, all physiological systems could be evaluated and the relationship between physiological response and G level established. This would be the most integrative way of defining, for the first time ever, G-thresholds for each physiological system. b. Chronic space-based centrifugation of animals. Chronic centrifugation of rodents at various G levels in space would allow for determination of AG thresholds of protection for each physiological system. In this case, all physiological systems will be of interest. Intermittent centrifugation will be of secondary interest. c. Chronic space-based centrifugation of cell cultures (RWV). Bioreactor studies of cells and cell cultures of various tissues at various G levels would allow for intracellular investigations of the effects of partial-G. Priority 2. Acute, intermittent space based partial-G analogs: a. Acute, intermittent space-based short radius human centrifugation. Intermittent centrifugation of humans would allow determination of thresholds of AG for protection of astronaut health in space. Priority 3. Chronic ground-based partial-G analogs: a. Chronic centrifugation of supine or head-down tilted humans. b. Chronic head-up tilt in humans. c. Chronic head-out graded dry immersion in humans. d. Chronic partial suspension of rodents e. Chronic rotating bioreactor cell culture studies (RWV) Priority 4. Acute ground based partial-G analogs. a. Parabolic flights. Very acute and short term effects of G levels between 0 and 1 in humans for fast responding systems like cardiovascular and sensorimotor as well as for acute responses in cell cultures and animals. b. Other acute models as indicated in table 3.
