Transforming Cyber Education thru Open to All Accessible Pathways

Boise State University’s (BSU) Cyber Operations and Resilience CORe program was intentionally designed so that any student, especially non-traditional and non-technical students, with an interest in cybersecurity could have an education and training pathway to enter the cyber workforce. The CORe curriculum focuses on teaching students how to design, apply, and improve cybersecurity through the interaction of people, processes, and technology. CORe is a stackable curriculum with elective credit hours and options for various academic and industry certificates and certifications that enable students to customize their unique career pathway. The CORe program guides students to think about the system being managed, the risks presented, and the dynamic intersection of system elements when considering how to incorporate resilience frameworks in achieving a resilient system. By developing systems thinking, the students gain an understanding of the interdependencies interacting with the operational system. Further, the CORe program encourages students to integrate cybersecurity knowledge with models and frameworks found in other academic disciplines through a unifying systems approach. CORe is designed around the realities of today’s broad cyber landscape: that breaches will occur in any system over time and proactive design of resilience into systems to detect, respond, and recover in a timely and orderly manner is critical. Students are taught to think holistically about cybersecurity focusing on all system elements. CORe is not a traditional cybersecurity degree. CORe is distinguished by the non-traditional engineering, computer science approach to cybersecurity education with the singular focus on infusing resilience operations and transdisciplinary systems thinking principles throughout the curriculum.

Concurrent conditions access across validity intervals in CMSSW

The CMS software system, known as CMSSW, has a generalized conditions, calibration, and geometry data products system called the EventSetup. The EventSetup caches results of reading or calculating data products based on the 'interval of validity', IOV, which is based on the time period for which that data product is appropriate. With the original single threaded CMSSW framework, updating only on an IOV boundary meant we only required memory for a single data product of a given type at any time during the program execution. In 2016 CMS transitioned to using a multi-threaded framework as away to save on memory during processing. This was accomplished by amortizing the memory cost of EventSetup data products across multiple concurrent events. To initially accomplish that goal required synchronizing event processing across IOV boundaries, thereby decreasing the scalability of the system. In this presentation we will explain how we used 'limited concurrent task queues' to allow concurrent IOVs while still being able to limit the memory utilized.

Thermal protection barrier for delaying access

A thermal protection barrier including a base layer having a plurality of baffles with perforated walls and a high melting temperature granular media disposed within the plurality of baffles. When the base layer is breached by a thermal threat, the granular media is operable to flow through the perforated walls of the plurality of baffles to provide a controlled flow of granular media to an area proximate the breach for thwarting the thermal threat.

Hydrogen Storage System Modeling: Public Access, Maintenance, and Enhancements

This presentation summarizes the Fiscal Year 2020 status and accomplishments for the Hydrogen Storage System Modeling project, a collaborative effort to manage, update, and enhance hydrogen storage system models developed under the Hydrogen Storage Engineering Center of Excellence (HSECoE). The project goal is to provide validated modeling tools that will be used by researchers to evaluate the performance of their new materials in engineered systems relative to the DOE technical targets.

Computational processor-in-memory with enhanced strided memory access

A computational memory for a computer. The memory includes a memory bank having a selected-row buffer and being configured to store records up to a number, K. The memory also includes an accumulator connected to the memory bank, the accumulator configured to store up to K records. The memory also includes an arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) connected to the accumulator and to the selected row buffer of the memory bank, the ALU having an indirect network of 2K ports for reading and writing records in the memory bank and the accumulator, and the ALU further physically configured to operate as a sorting network. The memory also includes a controller connected to the memory bank, the ALU, and the accumulator, the controller being hardware configured to direct operation of the ALU.

Reliability processing of remote direct memory access

Methods and systems for monitoring remote transmissions of messages among a plurality of nodes are described. A processing element in a first node may allocate a sequence number to a request to read and/or update data in a second node. The processing element may be different from main processors of the first node. The processing element may send the message and the sequence number to the second node. The processing element may modify a status of the sequence number to an active state, indicating a transmission of the message is pending. The processing element may, in response to a response from the second node, modify the status of the sequence number to an inactive state, indicating a completed transmission of the message. The processing element may, in response to no response from the second node within a time period, resend the message and the sequence number to the second node.

The Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS): An Open-Access Model for the North American Electricity System

The Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS) model is NREL’s flagship capacity expansion planning tool for the electric power sector in North America. Originally developed in 2001, ReEDS has been used primarily by NREL researchers to conduct high-profile analysis of the potential evolution of the electricity system. In September 2019, the core model is being released for public use. In this presentation, we provide an overview of the model architecture, key model features, data sources, lessons learned, and sample model results for the North American electric power system.

Neuromorphic computing architecture with dynamically accessible contexts

Various technologies pertaining to allocating computing resources of a neuromorphic computing system are described herein. Subgraphs of a neural algorithm graph to be executed by the neuromorphic computing system are identified. The subgraphs are each executed by a group of neuron circuits serially. Output data generated by execution of the subgraphs are provided to the same or a second group of neuron circuits at a same time or with associated timing data indicative of a time at which the output data was generated. The same or second group of neuron circuits performs one or more processing operations based upon the output data.
