Phosphate-Based Approaches for Dechlorination and Treatment of Salt Waste from Electrochemical Processing of Used Nuclear Fuel: A Perspective on Recent Work

Phosphate-based reagents are being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy to process halide salt-based nuclear wastes for stabilization prior to disposal. As evidenced by the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) project, electrochemical processing (pyroprocessing) can be employed to recover uranium and other actinides for reintegration into the nuclear fuel cycle from metallic fuels. The resultant salt-based wastes generated from electrochemical processing of EBR-II fuel contains fission products within a LiCl–KCl eutectic salt that necessitate appropriate disposal. This paper provides an overview of recent efforts to support halide-based salt waste treatment for disposition, as well as a basis for comparison with other related efforts in salt waste treatment through salt partitioning initiatives. The U.S. DOE has selected a phosphate waste form reference material for further investigation and longer-term studies.

Improving Aerosol Radiative Forcing and Climate in E3SM: Impacts of New Cloud Microphysics and Improved Wet Removal Treatments

Abstract Numerous Earth system models exhibit excessive aerosol effective forcing at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), including the Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). Here, in the context of the E3SM version 3 effort, the predicted particle property (P3) stratiform cloud microphysics scheme and an enhanced deep convection parameterization suite (ZM_plus) are implemented into E3SM. The ZM_plus includes a convective cloud microphysics scheme, a multi‐scale coherent structure parameterization for mesoscale convective systems, and a revised cloud base mass flux formulation considering impacts of the large‐scale environment. The P3 scheme improved cloud and radiation particularly over the Northern Hemisphere and the frequency of heavy precipitation over the tropics, and the ZM_plus improved clouds in the tropics. P3 decreases aerosol effective forcing by 0.15 W m −2 , while the ZM_plus increases it by 0.27 W m −2 , resulting from excessive direct (0.31 W m −2 ) and indirect forcing (−1.79 W m −2 ). The excessive aerosol forcings are due to aerosol overestimation associated with insufficient aerosol wet removal. By improving the physical treatments in the aerosol wet removal, we effectively mitigate anthropogenic aerosol overestimation and thus attenuate direct (0.09 W m −2 ) and indirect aerosol forcing (−1.52 W m −2 ). Adjustment to primary organic matter hygroscopicity reduces direct and indirect forcing to more reasonable values: −0.13 W m −2 and −1.31 W m −2 , respectively. On climatology, improved aerosol treatments mitigate overestimation of aerosol optical depth.

Active predation, phylogenetic diversity, and global prevalence of myxobacteria in wastewater treatment plants

The operation of modern wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is driven by activated sludge microbiota, a complex assemblage of trophically interacting microorganisms. Microbial predation is crucial to fundamental understanding of how biological interactions drive microbiome structuring and functioning of WWTPs. However, predatory bacteria have received little attention regarding their diversity, activity, and ecological function in activated sludge, limiting the exploitation of food web interactions for wastewater microbiome engineering. Here, by using rRNA-stable isotope probing of activated sludge microbiota with 13 C-labeled prey bacteria, we uncovered diverse as-yet-uncultivated putative predatory bacteria that actively incorporated 13 C-biomass. Myxobacteria, especially Haliangium and the mle1-27 clade, were found as the dominant active predators, refreshing conventional views based on a few predatory isolates of Bdellovibrionota from WWTPs. The identified predatory bacteria showed more selective predation on prey compared with the protists dominated by ciliates, providing in situ evidence for inter-domain predation behavior divergence in activated sludge. Putative predatory bacteria were tracked over a two-year microbiome monitoring effort at a local WWTP, revealing the predominance of Myxococcota (6.5 ± 1.3%) over Bdellovibrionota (1.0 ± 0.2%) lineages. Phylogenetic analysis unveiled highly diverse myxobacteria inhabiting activated sludge and suggested a habitat filtering effect in global WWTPs. Further mining of a global activated sludge microbiome dataset revealed the prevalence of Myxococcota (5.4 ± 0.1%) species and potential impacts of myxobacterial predation on process performance. Collectively, our findings provided unique insights into the predating activity, diversity, and prevalence of Myxococcota species in activated sludge, highlighting their links with wastewater treatment processes via trophic regulation of enteric and functional bacteria.

Prokaryotic viruses impact functional microorganisms in nutrient removal and carbon cycle in wastewater treatment plants

As one of the largest biotechnological applications, activated sludge (AS) systems in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) harbor enormous viruses, with 10-1,000-fold higher concentrations than in natural environments. However, the compositional variation and host-connections of AS viruses remain poorly explored. Here, we report a catalogue of ~50,000 prokaryotic viruses from six WWTPs, increasing the number of described viral species of AS by 23-fold, and showing the very high viral diversity which is largely unknown (98.4-99.6% of total viral contigs). Most viral genera are represented in more than one AS system with 53 identified across all. Viral infection widely spans 8 archaeal and 58 bacterial phyla, linking viruses with aerobic/anaerobic heterotrophs, and other functional microorganisms controlling nitrogen/phosphorous removal. Notably, Mycobacterium, notorious for causing AS foaming, is associated with 402 viral genera. Our findings expand the current AS virus catalogue and provide reference for the phage treatment to control undesired microorganisms in WWTPs.

Improving the creation of SiV centers in diamond via sub-μs pulsed annealing treatment

Silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are emerging as promising quantum emitters in applications such as quantum communication and quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a sub-μs pulsed annealing treatment that dramatically increases the photoluminescence of SiV centers in diamond. Using a silane-functionalized adamantane precursor and a laser- heated diamond anvil cell, the temperature and energy conditions required to form SiV centers in diamond were mapped out via an optical thermometry system with an accuracy of ±50 K and a 1 μs temporal resolution. Annealing scheme studies reveal that pulsed annealing can obviously minimize the migration of SiV centers out of the diamond lattice, and a 2.5-fold increase in the number of emitting centers was achieved using a series of 200-ns pulses at a 50 kHz repetition rate via acousto-optic modulation. Our study provides a novel pulsed annealing treatment approach to improve the efficiency of the creation of SiV centers in diamond.

Informing selection of drugs for COVID-19 treatment through adverse events analysis

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing pandemic and there is an urgent need for safe and effective drugs for COVID-19 treatment. Since developing a new drug is time consuming, many approved or investigational drugs have been repurposed for COVID-19 treatment in clinical trials. Therefore, selection of safe drugs for COVID-19 patients is vital for combating this pandemic. Our goal was to evaluate the safety concerns of drugs by analyzing adverse events reported in post-market surveillance. We collected 296 drugs that have been evaluated in clinical trials for COVID-19 and identified 28,597,464 associated adverse events at the system organ classes (SOCs) level in the FDA adverse events report systems (FAERS). We calculated Z-scores of SOCs that statistically quantify the relative frequency of adverse events of drugs in FAERS to quantitatively measure safety concerns for the drugs. Analyzing the Z-scores revealed that these drugs are associated with different significantly frequent adverse events. Our results suggest that this safety concern metric may serve as a tool to inform selection of drugs with favorable safety profiles for COVID-19 patients in clinical practices. Caution is advised when administering drugs with high Z-scores to patients who are vulnerable to associated adverse events.

A simple model of COVID-19 explains disease severity and the effect of treatments

Abstract Considerable effort has been made to better understand why some people suffer from severe COVID-19 while others remain asymptomatic. This has led to important clinical findings; people with severe COVID-19 generally experience persistently high levels of inflammation, slower viral load decay, display a dysregulated type-I interferon response, have less active natural killer cells and increased levels of neutrophil extracellular traps. How these findings are connected to the pathogenesis of COVID-19 remains unclear. We propose a mathematical model that sheds light on this issue by focusing on cells that trigger inflammation through molecular patterns: infected cells carrying pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damaged cells producing damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). The former signals the presence of pathogens while the latter signals danger such as hypoxia or lack of nutrients. Analyses show that SARS-CoV-2 infections can lead to a self-perpetuating feedback loop between DAMP expressing cells and inflammation, identifying the inability to quickly clear PAMPs and DAMPs as the main contributor to hyperinflammation. The model explains clinical findings and reveal conditions that can increase the likelihood of desired clinical outcome from treatment administration. In particular, the analysis suggest that antivirals need to be administered early during infection to have an impact on disease severity. The simplicity of the model and its high level of consistency with clinical findings motivate its use for the formulation of new treatment strategies.

Organic wastewater treatment by a single-atom catalyst and electrolytically produced H2O2

The presence of organic contaminants in wastewater poses considerable risks to the health of both humans and ecosystems. Although advanced oxidation processes that rely on highly reactive radicals to destroy organic contaminants are appealing treatment options, substantial energy and chemical inputs limit their practical applications. Here we demonstrate that Cu single atoms incorporated in graphitic carbon nitride can catalytically activate H 2 O 2 to generate hydroxyl radicals at pH 7.0 without energy input, and show robust stability within a filtration device. We further design an electrolysis reactor for the on-site generation of H 2 O 2 from air, water and renewable energy. Coupling the single-atom catalytic filter and the H 2 O 2 electrolytic generator in tandem delivers a wastewater treatment system. These findings provide a promising path toward reducing the energy and chemical demands of advanced oxidation processes, as well as enabling their implementation in remote areas and isolated communities.

Polaron absorption in aligned conjugated polymer films: breakdown of adiabatic treatments and going beyond the conventional mid-gap state model

This study provides the first experimental polarized intermolecular and intramolecular optical absorption components of field-induced polarons in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl), rr-P3HT, a polymer semiconductor. Highly aligned rr-P3HT thin films were prepared by a high temperature shear-alignment process that orients polymer backbones along the shearing direction. rr-P3HT in-plane molecular orientation was measured by electron diffraction, and out-of-plane orientation was measured through series of synchrotron X-ray scattering techniques. Then, with molecular orientation quantified, polarized charge modulation spectroscopy was used to probe mid-IR polaron absorption in the ℏω = 0.075 — 0.75 eV range and unambiguously assign intermolecular and intramolecular optical absorption components of hole polarons in rr-P3HT. This data represents the first experimental quantification of these polarized components and allowed long-standing theoretical predictions to be compared to experimental results. The experimental data is discrepant with predictions of polaron absorption based on an adiabatic framework that works under the Born–Oppenheimer approximation, but the data is entirely consistent with a more recent nonadiabatic treatment of absorption based on a modified Holstein Hamiltonian. This nonadiabatic treatment was used to show that both intermolecular and intramolecular polaron coherence break down at length scales significantly smaller than estimated structural coherence in either direction. Importantly, this strongly suggests that polaron delocalization is fundamentally limited by energetic disorder in rr-P3HT.

A Year-Round Energy-Efficient Fresh Air Handling System with Two-Stage Heat Pumps and Lake Water Pre-Treatment

Supplying fresh air is important for indoor air quality, but the energy consumption to treat fresh air is significant. The main problems in existing fresh air system include: supplying single-temperature water to treat fresh air and not applying natural energy sufficiently restrict the efficiency improvement of cooling and heat sources; unused air handling devices under most operating conditions throughout the year increase the fan energy consumption. Thus, this study proposes an efficient fresh air system that uses lake water to pre-treat fresh air and two-stage heat pumps for further treatment, and the unused air handling devices in the system are bypassed. A fresh air system in northern China is selected as a case to show the annual energy performance of the proposed system, and a comparative analysis is conducted between the proposed system and a traditional system. The results show that the annual energy-savings of the proposed system compared to the traditional system come from fans, and compressors, which are 56.5%, and 31.1%, respectively, with an entire system energy saving of 32.2%. The proposed system can achieve an annual system coefficient of performance (COP) of 5.5. This study provides potential for further improving the energy efficiency in fresh air treatment.

Recovery from plasma etching-induced nitrogen vacancies in p-type gallium nitride using UV/O 3 treatments

Plasma etching of p-type GaN creates n-type nitrogen vacancy (V N ) defects at the etched surface, which can be detrimental to device performance. In mesa isolated diodes, etch damage on the sidewalls degrades the ideality factor and leakage current. Here a treatment was developed to recover both the ideality factor and leakage current, which uses UV/O 3 treatment to oxidize the damaged layers followed by HF etching to remove them. The temperature dependent I–V measurement shows that the reverse leakage transport mechanism is dominated by Poole–Frenkel emission at room temperature through the etch-induced V N defect. Depth resolved cathodoluminescence confirms that the damage is limited to first several nanometers and is consistent with the V N defect.

Ligand removal of Au 25 nanoclusters by thermal and electrochemical treatments for selective CO 2 electroreduction to CO

Undercoordinated metal nanoclusters have shown great promise for various catalytic applications. However, their activity is often limited by the covalently bonded ligands, which could block the active surface sites. Here, we investigate the ligand removal process for Au 25 nanoclusters using both thermal and electrochemical treatments, as well as its impact on the electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. The Au 25 nanoclusters are synthesized with 2-phenylethanethiol as the capping agent and anchored on sulfur-doped graphene. The thiolate ligands can be readily removed under either thermal annealing at ≥180°C or electrochemical biasing at ≤-0.5 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, as evidenced by the Cu underpotential deposition surface area measurement, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. However, these ligand-removing treatments also trigger the structural evolution of Au 25 nanoclusters concomitantly. The thermally and electrochemically treated Au 25 nanoclusters show enhanced activity and selectivity for the electrochemical CO 2 -to-CO conversion than their pristine counterpart, which is attributed to the exposure of undercoordinated Au sites on the surface after ligand removal. This work provides facile strategies to strip away the staple ligands from metal nanoclusters and highlights its importance in promoting the catalytic performances.

Elaborated thermochemical treatment of HF, CO, N 2 , and H 2 O: Insight into HEAT and its extensions

Here, empirical, highly accurate non-relativistic electronic total atomization energies (eTAEs) are established by combining experimental or computationally converged treatments of the nuclear motion and relativistic contributions with the total atomization energies of HF, CO, N 2 , and H 2 O obtained from the Active Thermochemical Tables. These eTAEs, which have estimated (2σ) uncertainties of less than 10 cm -1 (0.12 kJ mol -1 ), form the basis for an analysis of high-level ab initio quantum chemical calculations that aim at reproducing these eTAEs for the title molecules. The results are then employed to analyze the performance of the high-accuracy extrapolated ab initio thermochemistry, or High-Accuracy Extrapolated Ab Initio Thermochemistry (HEAT), family of theoretical methods. The method known as HEAT-345(Q), in particular, is found to benefit from fortuitous error cancellation between its treatment of the zero-point energy, extrapolation errors in the Hartree-Fock and coupled cluster contributions, neglect of post-(T) core-correlation, and the basis-set error involved in higher-level correlation corrections. In addition to shedding light on a longstanding curiosity of the HEAT protocol—where the cheapest HEAT-345(Q) performs comparably to the theoretically more complete HEAT-456QP procedure—this study lays the foundation for extended HEAT variants that offer substantial improvements in accuracy relative to the established approaches.

GaN-on-GaN p-i-n diodes with avalanche capability enabled by eliminating surface leakage with hydrogen plasma treatment

Traditional mesa terminations require precise angle design to reduce the electric field at the edge and surface treatment to reduce etch damage. Otherwise, the device usually suffers a premature breakdown. This work proposes the use of easy-to-implement hydrogen plasma treatment to solve the premature breakdown caused by mesa and demonstrates the avalanche capability in GaN-on-GaN p-i-n diodes. The breakdown electric field when the avalanche occurred was ∼2.3 MV/cm at room temperature for a GaN drift layer with a doping concentration of ∼7 × 1015 cm−3, which is consistent with the theoretical value. The temperature coefficient of the avalanche breakdown voltage of the devices was 4.64–4.85 × 10−4 K−1. This work shows a simple and effective approach to achieve avalanche capability in vertical GaN power devices, which can serve as an important reference for the future development of efficient and robust GaN power electronics.

Dynamic response of additively manufactured Ti–5Al–5V–5Mo–3Cr as a function of heat treatment

Both shock and shockless compression experiments were performed on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) Ti–5Al–5V–5Mo–3Cr (Ti-5553) to peak compressive stresses near 15 GPa. Experiments were performed on the as-built material, containing a purely β (body centered cubic) microstructure, and two differing heat treatments resulting in a dual phase α (hexagonal close packed) and β microstructure. The Hugoniot, Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL), and spallation strength were measured and compared to wrought Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64). The results indicate the LPBF Ti-5553 Hugoniot response is similar between heat treatments and to Ti-64. The HEL stress observed in the LPBF Ti-5553 was considerably higher than Ti-64, with the as-built, fully β alloy exhibiting the largest values. The spallation strength of the LPBF Ti-5553 was also similar to Ti-64. Clear evidence of initial porosity serving as initiation sites for spallation damage was observed when comparing computed tomography measurements before and after loading. Post-mortem scanning electron microscopy images of the recovered spallation samples showed no evidence of retained phase changes near the spall plane. The spall plane was found to have kinks aligned with the loading direction near areas with large concentrations of twin-like, crystallographic defects in the as-built condition. For the heat-treated samples, the concentrations of twin-like, crystallographic defects were absent, and no preference for failure at the interface between the α and β phases was observed.

Late-time post-merger modeling of a compact binary: effects of relativity, r-process heating, and treatment of transport

Detectable electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves from compact binary mergers can be produced by outflows from the black hole-accretion disk remnant during the first 10 s after the merger. Two-dimensional axisymmetric simulations with effective viscosity remain an efficient and informative way to model this late-time post-merger evolution. In addition to the inherent approximations of axisymmetry and modeling turbulent angular momentum transport by a viscosity, previous simulations often make other simplifications related to the treatment of the equation of state and turbulent transport effects. In this paper, we test the effect of these modeling choices. By evolving with the same viscosity the exact post-merger initial configuration previously evolved in Newtonian viscous hydrodynamics, we find that the Newtonian treatment provides a good estimate of the disk ejecta mass but underestimates the outflow velocity. We find that the inclusion of heavy nuclei causes a notable increase in ejecta mass. An approximate inclusion of r-process effects has a comparatively smaller effect, except for its designed effect on the composition. Diffusion of composition and entropy, modeling turbulent transport effects, has the overall effect of reducing ejecta mass and giving it a speed with lower average and more tightly-peaked distribution. Also, we find significant acceleration of outflow even at distances beyond 10 000 km, so that thermal wind velocities only asymptote beyond this radius and at higher values than often reported.

A superconfiguration calculation of opacity with consistent bound and continuum electron treatments using green’s functions

One of the challenges in calculating the opacity of dense plasmas is the difficulty in consistently modeling electrons bound to nuclei and those that exist within the continuum of free states in electronic structure models. We address this issue by adapting the green's function approach, originally developed for use in average atom calculations, to the determination of superconfiguration (SC) electronic structure. The spectra created using these SCs indicate that a consistent treatment of continuum electronic structure is important for phenomena involving electrons near ionization thresholds, such as the pressure ionization of bound states and the opacity due to transitions near bound-free edges. Though important for dense plasmas, the detailed incorporation of continuum electrons into structure calculations does not have significant impact on the recent discrepancies between the predicted and measured opacity of hot, dense iron (Bailey et al 2015 Nature517 56). Here we find that the inclusion of plasma effects through an ion-sphere model along with our treatment of continuum electronic states gives a description of pressure ionization in hot, dense aluminum that is in better agreement with experiment than methods that rely on perturbative descriptions of the plasma environment (Hoarty et al 2013 Phys. Rev. Lett.110 265003).

Abnormal grain growth of 68Cu–16Al–16Zn alloys for elastocaloric cooling via cyclical heat treatments

Abstract Cu-based superelastic shape memory alloys are promising for low-stress elastocaloric cooling. We have synthesized bulk alloys of 68Cu–16Al–16Zn under different conditions in order to promote its grain growth and enhance its elastocaloric properties. High-temperature x-ray diffraction of untreated 68Cu–16Al–16Zn alloy showed that the phase boundary between the α + β mixed phases and the high temperature phase ( β phase) was between 973 K and 1023 K. Based on this result, the 68Cu–16Al–16Zn alloy was heated and cooled in a furnace repeatedly between 773 K and 1173 K. The maximum grain size after heat treatment of the ingot rolled to 67% reached 11.1 mm. The latent heat of the martensitic transformation after grain growth was 6.3 J g −1 , which is higher than the previously reported value for the compound. The stress–strain curve of 68Cu–16Al–16Zn rolled to 67% rolling with cyclical heat treatments showed a maximum stress of 106 MPa at 4.5% strain, with adiabatic temperature change of 5.9 K in heating during stress loading and 5.6 K in cooling in stress removal. Furthermore, no fatigue in the stress–strain behavior was observed up to at least 60 000 mechanical cycles at 2% strain.
