Staking Tool for Hard Metals

Simple tool stakes hard-steel parts--that is, forces one part into recess on another, deforming receiving part so that it restrains inserted one. Tool allows small machine shops to stake hard steel without massive presses. Can be used, for example, to insert ball and spring into hard steel snap-tool body such as that used to turn socket wrenches. Use is not limited to hard steel; can be used as well to assemble parts made of softer materials.

Staked Bearing Removal Tool

Tool with assembled components expedites bearing replacement in aircraft, ground vehicles, and other applications. New tool cuts lip on one side to facilitate bearing replacement. After bearing retaining lip is cut away, bearing pressed out. Tool makes it possible to replace bearings without disassembling structure.

Tool Enlarges Hard-to-Reach Holes

Tool centers itself and cuts precise depth. Tool consists of crosscut carbide bur; sleeve that serves as depth stop and pilot; length of flexible, strong piano wire; and standard drive socket. Parts brazed together. Piano wire transmits torque and axial force to cutting tool.

Tool Support Ring

Tool support ring requires only single repositioning to give broaching tool access to series of 66 holes located on circle. Permits use of tools designed for hand-held use (such as electric drill) where less portable setup (such as milling machine) otherwise required.

Installation/Removal Tool for Screw-Mounted Components

Tweezerlike tool simplifies installation of screws in places reached only through narrow openings. With changes in size and shape, basic tool concept applicable to mounting and dismounting of transformers, sockets, terminal strips and mechanical parts. Inexpensive tool fabricated as needed by bending two pieces of steel wire. Exact size and shape selected to suit part manipulated and nature of inaccessible mounting space.

EMU battery/SMM power tool characterization study

The power tool which will be used to replace the attitude control system in the SMM spacecraft was modified to operate from a self contained battery. The extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) battery was tested for the power tool application. The results are that the EMU battery is capable of operating the power tool within the pulse current range of 2.0 to 15.0 amperes and battery temperature range of -10 to 40 degrees Celsius.

Lightweight solar array blanket tooling, laser welding and cover process technology

A two phase technology investigation was performed to demonstrate effective methods for integrating 50 micrometer thin solar cells into ultralightweight module designs. During the first phase, innovative tooling was developed which allows lightweight blankets to be fabricated in a manufacturing environment with acceptable yields. During the second phase, the tooling was improved and the feasibility of laser processing of lightweight arrays was confirmed. The development of the cell/interconnect registration tool and interconnect bonding by laser welding is described.

User interface design of software tool system as a technology transfer vehicle

Design considerations of an on going research project for developing an effective and easy to use tool system that supports entire maintenance phases are introduced. The primary focus is the design of an intelligent user interface mechanism. By analyzing why existing tools and tool systems are not used very effectively, we can define user requirements for the user interface mechanisms, specify design criteria of user interface functions, and introduce some features of the implementation. Because this project is still in process, intermediate evaluation and expected effectiveness are discussed.

The database management system: A topic and a tool

Data structures and data base management systems are common tools employed to deal with the administrative information of a university. An understanding of these topics is needed by a much wider audience, ranging from those interested in computer aided design and manufacturing to those using microcomputers. These tools are becoming increasingly valuable to academic programs as they develop comprehensive computer support systems. The wide use of these tools relies upon the relational data model as a foundation. Experience with the use of the IPAD RIM5.0 program is described.

Tubing and cable cutting tool

A hand held hydraulic cutting tool was developed which is particularly useful in deactivating ejection seats in military aircraft rescue operations. The tool consists primarily of a hydraulic system composed of a fluid reservoir, a pumping piston, and an actuator piston. Mechanical cutting jaws are attached to the actuator piston rod. The hydraulic system is controlled by a pump handle. As the pump handle is operated the actuator piston rod is forced outward and thus the cutting jaws are forced together. The frame of the device is a flexible metal tubing which permits easy positioning of the tool cutting jaws in remote and normally inaccessible locations. Bifurcated cutting edges ensure removal of a section of the tubing or cable to thereby reduce the possibility of accidental reactivation of the tubing or cable being severed.

EMU Battery/module Service Tool Characterization Study

The power tool which will be used to replace the attitude control system in the SMM spacecraft is being modified to operate from a self contained battery. The extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) battery, a silver zinc battery, was tested for the power tool application. The results obtained during show the EMU battery is capable of operating the power tool within the pulse current range of 2.0 to 15.0 amperes and battery temperature range of -10 to 40 degrees Celsius.

Concepts and Tools for the Software Life Cycle

The tools, techniques, and aids needed to engineer, manage, and administer a large software-intensive task are themselves parts of a large softwaare base, and are incurred only at great expense. The needs of the software life cycle in terms of such supporting tools and methodologies are highlighted. The concept of a distributed network for engineering, management, and administrative functions is outlined, and the key characteristics of localized subnets in high-communications-traffic areas of software activity are discussed. A formal, deliberate, structured, systems-engineering approach for the construction of a uniform, coordinated tool set is proposed as a means to reduce development and maintenance costs, foster adaptability, enhance reliability, and promote standardization.

A computer modeling methodology and tool for assessing design concepts for the Space Station Data Management System

A computer modeling tool is being developed to assess candidate designs for the Space Station Data Management System (DMS). The DMS is to be a complex distributed computer system including the processor, storage devices, local area networks, and software that will support all processing functions onboard the Space Station. The modeling tool will allow a candidate design for the DMS, or for other subsystems that use the DMS, to be evaluated in terms of parameters. The tool and its associated modeling methodology are intended for use by DMS and subsystem designers to perform tradeoff analyses between design concepts using varied architectures and technologies.
