Improving biomass and lipid yields of Desmodesmus armatus and Chlorella vulgaris through mutagenesis and high-throughput screening

Advancement of microalgae for use as biofuel feedstock depends on bioprospecting novel strains and then applying classical strain improvement techniques to enhance desirable traits. Here we successfully demonstrate this approach using two novel strains of green algae, identified as Desmodesmus armatus and Chlorella vulgaris, to improve biomass and lipid yields. UV irradiation was utilized to generate random mutations and the resulting populations were analyzed via flow cytometry to quantify lipid fluorescence while enriching for high lipid variants using fluorescence activated cell sorting. Secondary screening was performed via in situ fluorescence staining to identify the single highest lipid producing mutants from each strain. This approach produced a Desmodesmus armatus mutant that exhibited both increased biomass productivity and higher lipid content, which doubled lipid yield from the culture. The resulting Chlorella vulgaris mutant exhibited an increase in growth only, resulting in a 33% increase in lipid yield.

High-throughput and high-performance lithium-ion batteries via dry processing

A scalable powder-to-electrode dry processing strategy mainly based on powder dry mixing and rolling/calendering is rationally designed. The dry processed electrodes show lower tortuosity compared to that of conventional slurry-based electrodes. The dry-processed high-loading graphite anodes (6.6 mAh cm -2 ) and LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 cathodes (6.0 mAh cm -2 ) exhibit promising electrochemical performance in half-cells and full-cells. The full-cells with both electrodes from dry processing demonstrates superb rate performance to their counterpart with conventional slurry-based electrodes and delivers of capacity retentions of 74.1 % and 63.6 % over 400 and 800 cycles, respectively. Notably, the initial Coulombic efficiency of the dry processed graphite anodes is low ascribed to polytetrafluoroethylene binder. Finally, the results suggest that dry processing is promising for future lithium-ion battery manufacturing and also pinpoint the needs of modification for the polytetrafluoroethylene binder in the graphite anodes.

A machine learning approach for increased throughput of density functional theory substitutional alloy studies

In this study, a machine learning-based technique is developed to reduce the computational cost required to explore large design spaces of substitutional alloys. The first advancement is based on a neural network (NN) approach to predict the initial position of minority and majority ions prior to DFT relaxation. The second advancement is to allow the NN to predict the total energy for every possibility minority ion position and select the most stable configuration in the absence of relaxing each trial minority configuration. A bismuth oxide materials system, (Bi x La y Yb z ) 2 MoO 6 , was used as the model system to demonstrate the developed methods and quantify the resulting computational speedup. Compared to a brute force method that requires the calculation of every permutation of minority configuration and subsequent DFT relaxation, a 1.3× speedup was realized if the NN predicted the initial configuration of ions prior to relaxation. Implementation of the second advancement allowed the NN to predict the total energy for all possible trial configurations and downselect the most stable configurations prior to relaxation, resulting in a speedup of approximately 37×. Validation was done by comparing position and energy between the NN and DFT predictions. A maximum position vector mean squared error (MSE) of 1.6 × 10 -2 and a maximum energy MSE of 2.3 × 10 -7 was predicted for the worst case configuration. This method demonstrates a significant computational speedup, which has the potential for even greater computational savings for larger compositional design spaces.

Enhancing the activity of Fe-N-C oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts by high-throughput exploration of synthesis parameters

Here, the most active class of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in acidic electrolytes are those synthesized by heat treatment of iron, carbon, nitrogen precursors (Fe-N-C). Due to the large number of possible precursor compounds, a small fraction of the synthesis variable space has been explored. Correlation of synthesis variables with Fe speciation and ORR activity has been limited. In this work, an automation platform and a multi-port ball-milling were utilized to evaluate the effects of synthesis variables, such as identity of iron precursor, iron loading, and carbon and nitrogen sources on the ORR activity of iron -nitrogen-carbon catalysts in acidic electrolyte. The ORR activity is correlated with catalyst Fe speciation determined using Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAFS).

Ultrarapid crystallization of low-dimensional perovskite with excellent stability for future high-throughput fabrication

We report perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as an emerging photovoltaic technique have achieved exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 25.7% after fast development over the past decade. But currently some critical issues are still not well addressed in terms of realizing large-scale fabrication, for example, fast fabrication of high-quality perovskite film with good stability. Here, we demonstrate the use of stable and fast-crystallizing low-dimensional (LD) perovskite thin films as the light absorber with only a 10 s annealing time at 250 °C, delivering a PCE of 18.16%. The crystallization and photoelectric properties of LD perovskite are well illustrated. The reduction in the annealing time will dramatically increase the productivity of PSCs. The PSCs based on rapidly annealed LD perovskite thin films exhibit excellent stability, with only 12% loss of PCE after 1000 h storage at 85 °C and 40-70% relative humidity.
