Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals (vdW) cuprate crystals present a platform for engineering superconducting order parameters by adjusting stacking angles. Using a cryogenic assembly technique, we construct twisted vdW Josephson junctions (JJs) at atomically sharp interfaces between Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x crystals, with quality approaching the limit set by intrinsic JJs. Near 45° twist angle, we observe fractional Shapiro steps and Fraunhofer patterns, consistent with the existence of two degenerate Josephson ground states related by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). By programming the JJ current bias sequence, we controllably break TRS to place the JJ into either of the two ground states, realizing reversible Josephson diodes without external magnetic fields. Furthermore, our results open a path to engineering topological devices at higher temperatures.
Understanding mesoscale heterogeneity is important for evaluating fatigue and failure of structural materials and for manufacturing processes. Data-driven tools can facilitate in guiding effort investment (measurements and computations) at various stages of the materials development. Our 3D reconstruction approach is to find a set of coefficients which define a bounding surface of the electron density. Data for training the 3D CNN was generated by sampling coefficients from uniform distributions. Test vs. prediction values are shown for the 28 even-valued coefficients for 1000 test structures, with the best and worst performers highlighted. The adaptive part of this work utilized a model independent extremum seeking (ES). The predictions of the CNN were used as the starting point for the ES algorithm. The convergence of the ES algorithm for 3 different structures is illustrated, and the robustness of the adaptive ML approach was demonstrated on experimentally measured 3D crystal from high energy diffraction microscopy. Reconstruction of a non-uniform density volume with different levels of Poisson noise is also shown. Preliminary attempts at reconstructing measured La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 diffraction patterns have so far failed.
This project assesses the mechanical performance limits of two advanced superconducting technologies for HEP magnets, Bi-2212 round wire and REBCO tape. We specify the microstructural basis for critical current degradation in Bi-2212, and establish techniques for investigating the processing maturity of the powder-in-tube technology. For REBCO, we investigate a variety of defect mechanisms including delamination and damage from mechanical slitting of the wire.
The objective of the activities under this Annex is to address the extrinsic Jc limitations uncovered in pioneering work. In order to engineer the defects pinning landscape charged particle irradiations experiments on bulk samples, different doping and chemical additions will be performed at different National facilities (Test Beam Facility at Fermilab; Linac Isotope Producer at Brookhaven National Laboratory; Integrated Biology Laboratory at University of Wisconsin-Madison; Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University). The samples will be produced at ENEA by different techniques. Magnetization and advanced microscopy measures will be performed at Fermilab. After irradiation, depending on the level of radioactivity, the samples will be tested at Fermilab or where it is possible to measure radioactive materials as University of Wisconsin-Madison.
