Landsat 8 monitoring of multi-depth suspended sediment concentrations in Lake Erie’s Maumee River using machine learning

Satellite remote sensing has been widely used to map suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in waterbodies. However, due to the complexity of sediment-water interactions, it has been difficult to derive linear and non-linear regression equations to reliably predict SSC, especially when trying to estimate depth of integrated sediment. Herein, this study uses Landsat 8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) sensor to map SSC within the Maumee River in Ohio, USA, at multiple depth intervals (15, 61, 91, and 182 cm). Simple linear least squares regression (LLSR), and three common machine learning models: random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and model averaged neural network (MANN) were used to estimate SSC at the depth intervals. All machine learning models significantly outperformed LLSR while RF performed the best. In both RF and MANN, R2 (coefficient of determination) increases with depth with a maximum R2 of 0.89 and 0.83, respectively, at a depth of 0–182 cm. The results show that machine learning models can implement nonlinear relationships that produce better predictions than traditional linear regression methods in estimating depth integrated SSC, especially when samples are limited.

Observations of the Cabibbo-Suppressed decays $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ 0 , $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ - $π$ + and the Cabibbo-Favored decay $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$K$ - $π$ + $π$ + *

Using electron-positron annihilation data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb -1 , collected by the BESIII detector in the energy region between $4599.53$ $MeV$ and $4698.82$ $MeV$ we report the first observations of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ 0 , $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ - $π$ + , and the Cabibbo-favored decay $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$K$ - $π$ + $π$ + with statistical significances of $7.9σ$, $7.8σ$, and Misplaced &, respectively. The branching fractions of these decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}$($Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ 0 ) = ($0.64 ± 0.09 ± 0.02$)%, $\mathcal{B}$($Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ - $π$ + ) = ($0.45 ± 0.07 ± 0.03$)%, and $\mathcal{B}$ $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$K$ - $π$ + $π$ + ) = ($1.90 ± 0.08 ± 0.09$)% where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We find that the branching fraction of the decay $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$$π$ + $π$ 0 is about one order of magnitude higher than that of $Λ^{+}_{c}$ → $\mathcal{n}$ $π$ + .

Performance of missing transverse momentum reconstruction in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV using the CMS detector

The performance of missing transverse momentum (p → T miss ) reconstruction algorithms for the CMS experiment is presented, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected at the CERN LHC in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb -1 . The results include measurements of the scale and resolution of p → T miss , and detailed studies of events identified with anomalous p → T miss . The performance is presented of a p → T miss reconstruction algorithm that mitigates the effects of multiple proton-proton interactions, using the "pileup per particle identification" method. The performance is shown of an algorithm used to estimate the compatibility of the reconstructed p → T miss with the hypothesis that it originates from resolution effects.

Search for New Physics in Jet Multiplicity Patterns of Multilepton Events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A first search for beyond the standard model physics in jet multiplicity patterns of multilepton events is presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The search uses observed jet multiplicity distributions in one-, two-, and four-lepton events to explore possible enhancements in jet production rate in three-lepton events with and without bottom quarks. The data are found to be consistent with the standard model expectation. The results are interpreted in terms of supersymmetric production of electroweak chargino-neutralino superpartners with cascade decays terminating in prompt hadronic 𝑅-parity violating interactions.

General search for supersymmetric particles in scenarios with compressed mass spectra using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A general search is presented for supersymmetric particles (sparticles) in scenarios featuring compressed mass spectra using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . A wide range of potential sparticle signatures are targeted, including pair production of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks. The search focuses on events with a high transverse momentum system from initial-state-radiation jets recoiling against a potential sparticle system with significant missing transverse momentum. Events are categorized based on their lepton multiplicity, jet multiplicity, number of 𝑏-tagged jets, and kinematic variables sensitive to the sparticle masses and mass splittings. The sensitivity extends to higher parent sparticle masses than previously probed at the LHC for production of pairs of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks with mass spectra featuring small mass splittings (compressed mass spectra). The observed results demonstrate agreement with the predictions of the background-only model. Lower mass limits are set at 95% confidence level on production of pairs of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks that extend to 325, 275, and 780 GeV, respectively, for the most favorable compressed mass regime cases.

Study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state

A study of the lineshape of the χ c1 (3872) state is made using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb –1 collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. Candidate χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) mesons from b-hadron decays are selected in the J/ψπ + π – decay mode. Describing the lineshape with a Breit-Wigner function, the mass splitting between the χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) states, Δm, and the width of the χ c1 (3872) state, Γ BW , are determined to be Δm=185.598 ± 0.067 ± 0.068 MeV, Γ BW = 1.39 ± 0.24 ± 0.10 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using a Flatté-inspired model, the mode and full width at half maximum of the lineshape are determined to be mode = 3871.69+0.00+0.05 – 0.04–0.13 MeV, FWHM=0.22 +0.07+0.11–0.06–0.13 MeV. An investigation of the analytic structure of the Flatté amplitude reveals a pole structure, which is compatible with a quasibound D 0 D¯ *0 state but a quasivirtual state is still allowed at the level of 2 standard deviations.

Amplitude analysis of B 0 → D ¯ 0 D s + π - and B + → D - D s + π + decays

Resonant contributions in B 0 → D ¯ 0 D s + π - and B + → D - D s + π + decays are determined with an amplitude analysis, which is performed both separately and simultaneously, where in the latter case isospin symmetry between the decays is assumed. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . A doubly charged spin-0 open-charm tetraquark candidate together with a neutral partner, both with masses near 2.9 GeV, are observed in the $D_sπ$ decay channel.

We use the kinematic edge of the ${{\tau}}$ pseudomass distribution in the decay ${{\tau}}^-$ → $π^-π^+π^-ν_τ$ and measure the ${{\tau}}$ mass to be $1777.09±0.08±0.11$ $\mathrm{MeV}$ $/{c^2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is the most precise to date.

Search for high-mass resonances in final states with a τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a τ-lepton and a neutrino using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV is presented. The full run 2 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015–2018 is analyzed. The τ-lepton is reconstructed in its hadronic decay modes and the total transverse momentum carried out by neutrinos is inferred from the reconstructed missing transverse momentum. The search for new physics is performed on the transverse mass between the τ-lepton and the missing transverse momentum. No excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper exclusion limits are set on the W' →τ⁢v production cross section. Heavy W' vector bosons with masses up to 5.0 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming that they have the same couplings as the Standard Model W boson. For nonuniversal couplings, W' bosons are excluded for masses less than 3.5–5.0 TeV, depending on the model parameters. In addition, model-independent limits on the visible cross section times branching ratio are determined as a function of the lower threshold on the transverse mass of the τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum.

Search for the light hadron decay χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − η

With a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.5 fb − 1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, for the first time the light hadron decay χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − η is searched for. While no significant signal is observed, the upper limits at the 90% confidence level for σ [ e + e − → γ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) ] B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − η ] at center of mass energies from 4.13 GeV to 4.34 GeV are determined. By normalizing to the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ decay channel, a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching fraction ratio R = B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − η ] / B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ] < 0.12 is given. These measurements provide important inputs for understanding the internal structure of the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) resonance. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for Λ c + → φ p π 0 and branching fraction measurement of Λ c + → K - π + p π 0

We have investigated the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → φ p π 0 in e + e - collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 fb - 1 . The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e + e - asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the Υ ( 4 S ) and Υ ( 5 S ) resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B ( Λ c + → φ p π 0 ) < 15.3 × 10 - 5 at 90% confidence level. The contribution of nonresonant Λ c + → K + K - p π 0 decays is found to be consistent with zero, and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B ( Λ c + → K + K - p π 0 ) NR < 6.3 × 10 - 5 at 90% confidence level. We also search for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay P s + → φ p . We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of B ( Λ c + → P s + π 0 ) × B ( P s + → φ p ) < 8.3 × 10 - 5 at 90% confidence level. Finally, we measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ c + → K - π + p π 0 ; the result is B ( Λ c + → K - π + p π 0 ) = ( 4.42 ± 0.05 ( stat ) ± 0.12 ( syst ) ± 0.16 ( norm ) ) % , which is the most decisive measurement to date.
