Analysis and testing of high entrainment single nozzle jet pumps with variable mixing tubes

An analytical model was developed to predict the performance characteristics of axisymmetric single-nozzle jet pumps with variable area mixing tubes. The primary flow may be subsonic or supersonic. The computer program uses integral techniques to calculate the velocity profiles and the wall static pressures that result from the mixing of the supersonic primary jet and the subsonic secondary flow. An experimental program was conducted to measure mixing tube wall static pressure variations, velocity profiles, and temperature profiles in a variable area mixing tube with a supersonic primary jet. Static pressure variations were measured at four different secondary flow rates. These test results were used to evaluate the analytical model. The analytical results compared well to the experimental data. Therefore, the analysis is believed to be ready for use to relate jet pump performance characteristics to mixing tube design.

Experimental findings from zero-tank net positive suction head operation of the J-2 hydrogen pump

The results of a series of liquid hydrogen turbopump tests to demonstrate the feasibility of zero-tank net positive suction head are presented. A J-2 engine hydrogen pump and S-IVB stage fuel feed system were used for this investigation. The pump was operated at flows and speeds equivalent to normal J-2 engine operating conditions and at hydrogen bulk temperatures between 39 and 45 R. These tests show zero-tank not positive suction head to be a realistic operating mode that should be considered for future applications.

Interstellar formaldehyde. I - The collisional pumping mechanism for anomalous 6-centimeter absorption.

Investigation of the quantum mechanics of the collisional pumping process which Townes and Cheung (1969) propose as the cause of 'anomalous' formaldehyde absorption in diffuse dark nebulae discussed by Palmer et al. (1969). Quantum effects are taken into account in an attempt to determine whether such nebulae are likely to provide the physical conditions required for the collisional pumping process.

Quadrupole ion pump performance characteristics.

A new nonmagnetic ion pump is described that resembles a quadrupole ionization gauge. The dimensions are larger, and hyperbolically shaped electrodes replace the four rods. Pumping speeds (4-100 liters per sec) for different gases at various peak voltages (1000-3000 V) at corresponding frequencies (57-100 MHz) and at different pressures (10 microtorr to 1 nanotorr) are reported.

Anisotropic ultrahigh gain emission observed in rotational transitions in optically pumped HF gas.

Gain and laser oscillations are obtained on rotational transitions of the first excited vibrational state of HF gas at room temperature, resonantly pumped by the 2.7-micron lines of a pulsed HF laser. Pumping the P-branch transitions connecting the ground and first excited vibrational states produces gain at the coupled rotational transitions at 36, 42, 51, 63, 84, and 126 microns. The gain exhibits directional properties characteristic of a unidirectional amplifier predicted by a recent theory. The incremental gains of these lines are very large, in excess of 1/cm, and the lines oscillate easily without mirrors (superradiance).

A laser head for simultaneous optical pumping of several dye lasers

Device accomplishes simultaneous optical pumping using single flashlamp and electrical driver. Dye lasers require relatively low energy to operate (low-threshold pumping requirement) and provide simple method for producing simultaneous independent laser output at number of different wavelengths.

LED pumped Nd:YAG laser development program

The results of a development program for light emitting diode (LED) pumped Nd:YAG lasers are described. An index matching method to increase the coupling efficiency of the laser is described. A solid glass half-cylinder of 5.0 by 5.6 centimeters was used for index matching and also as a pumping cavity reflector. The laser rods were 1.5 by 56 millimeters with dielectric coatings on both end surfaces. The interfaces between the diode array, glass cylinder, and laser rod were filled with viscous fluid of refractive index n = 1.55. Experiments performed with both the glass cylinder and a gold coated stainless steel reflector of the same dimensions under the same operating conditions indicate that the index matching cylinder gave 159 to 200 percent improvement of coupling efficiency over the metal reflector at various operating temperatures.

Extended ion pumped vacuum friction test

Boundary layer friction data under ion pumped vacuum was taken for sixteen material couples. The test series was an extension of a previous study of the effects of modified ion pumped environments. Sliding distances imposed in the present effort greatly exceeded any studied in the previous contiguous, flight or ground tests. Wear out of specific couples, in particular, thin film lubricants was noted. The behavior of the test hardware including wear out of the mechanisms was noted. As a result, the impact of test interruption was observed for several test couples. Recovery of the friction upon re-establishing sliding in vacuum was generally rapid. The results of the extended sliding study reinforce the previous conclusion that sliding distance (mechanical history) is the primary factor in establishing the force limiting boundary layer friction. General friction value under the extended sliding confirm those observed in previous orbital and the related ground test studies.

Some refinements of the theory of the viscous screw pump.

Recently performed analysis for herringbone thrust bearings has been incorporated into the theory of the viscous screw pump for Newtonian fluids. In addition, certain earlier corrections for sidewall and channel curvature effects have been simplified. The result is a single, refined formula for the prediction of the pressure-flow relation for these pumps.

The optical pumping of alkali atoms using coherent radiation from semi-conductor injection lasers and incoherent radiation from resonance lamps

An experimental study for creating population differences in the ground states of alkali atoms (Cesium 133) is presented. Studies made on GaAs-junction lasers and the achievement of population inversions among the hyperfine levels in the ground state of Cs 133 by optically pumping it with radiation from a GaAs diode laser. Laser output was used to monitor the populations in the ground state hyperfine levels as well as to perform the hyperfine pumping. A GaAs laser operated at about 77 K was used to scan the 8521 A line of Cs 133. Experiments were performed both with neon-filled and with paraflint-coated cells containing the cesium vapor. Investigations were also made for the development of the triple resonance coherent pulse technique and for the detection of microwave induced hyperfine trasistions by destroying the phase relationships produced by a radio frequency pulse. A pulsed cesium resonance lamp developed, and the lamp showed clean and reproducible switching characteristics.

Evidence of charge exchange pumping in calcium-xenon system

Charge exchange between xenon ions and calcium atoms may produce an inversion between the 5s or 4d and 4p energy levels of the calcium ions. A low power flowing xenon plasma seeded with calcium was utilized to determine if charge exchange or electron collisions populate the 5s and 4d levels Ca(+). Line intensity ratios proportional to the density ratios n5s/n4p and n4d/n4p were measured. From the dependence of these intensity ratios on power input to the xenon plasma it was concluded that charge exchange pumping of the 5s and 4d levels predominates over electron collisional pumping of these levels. Also, by comparing intensity ratios obtained using argon and krypton in place of xenon with those obtained in xenon the same conclusion was made.

Evidence of charge exchange pumping in calcium-xenon system

Presented evidence shows that charge exchanges between xenon ions and calcium atoms may produce an inversion between 5s or 4d and 4p energy levels of calcium ions. The dependence of measured intensity ratios on power input to the xenon plasma indicates that charge exchange pumping of the 5s and 4d levels predominates over electron collisional pumping of these levels.

Diffusion pump modification promotes self-cleansing and high efficiency

Modifications eliminate contaminant substances from pump fluid during operation, which are principal causes of torpidity on evaporative surface. Diffusion pump is also acting as still. Resulting 100 percent vigorous working surface provides much greater molecular throughput and greatly improved efficiency.
