Natural variations in the geomagnetically trapped electron population

Temporal variations in the trapped natural electron flux intensities and energy spectra are discussed and demonstrated using recent satellite data. These data are intended to acquaint the space systems engineer with the types of natural variations that may be encountered during a mission and to augment the models of the electron environment currently being used in space system design and orbit selection. An understanding of the temporal variations which may be encountered should prove helpful. Some of the variations demonstrated here which are not widely known include: (1) addition of very energetic electrons to the outer zone during moderate magnetic storms: (2) addition of energetic electrons to the inner zone during major magnetic storms; (3) inversions in the outer zone electron energy spectrum during the decay phase of a storm injection event and (4) occasional formation of multiple maxima in the flux vs altitude profile of moderately energetic electrons.

Populating excited states of incoherent atoms using coherent light.

Study of the influence of various experimental parameters on the interaction between a multimode high-intensity laser light and the absorbing atoms of an atomic gas. Using a simplified treatment of line broadening which does not include correlations between momentum-changing collisions and pressure-broadening collisions, expressions are obtained that show the effect of pressure, laser-pulse length, and intensity on the excitation. It is found that, as long as the dephasing time of the atomic system is sufficiently short, the interaction reduces to a two-body collision between the atoms and photons, where coherence effects do not occur.

Dynamics of plankton populations in upwelling areas

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. Repeated coverage over the test site along the northwest coast of Africa showed that the structure of chlorophyll distribution is much more complicated than expected from continuous recordings. ERTS-1 data showed a very fast change in the chlorophyll distribution and it seems that also the concentration changes quickly. ERTS-1 showed on some frames offshore transportation of dust from the Sahara. All frames from Channel 7 will be arranged as a montage to derive the transportation pattern of dust. This step is important in biological aspects of interpreting ERTS-1 data, because the dissolution kinetics of eolian dust particles may influence significantly the chemistry of the surface water. Since visibility and the biochemistry of the test site off Africa are influenced by the dust transport, dust collection will be included in the ground truth program. Besides chlorophyll and other hydrographical parameters, the dust load in the test area will be measured. The collection plan is discussed along with a description of the high volume air sampler and the Anderson particle sizing head sampler to be used for the dust measurements.

An Expression for the Transformed Covariance Matrix of Multivariate Normal Populations

The problem is considered of classifying into one of m distinct n-variate classes an arbitrary n-channel multispectral measurement vector x. The classification procedure used is the maximum likelihood procedure. Information loss in compressing the n-channel data to k channels is taken to be the difference in the average interclass divergences (or probability of misclassification) in n-space and in k-space. Data compression is accomplished by kxn linear transformation i.e., multiplication of the spectral n-vector by a kxn matrix of rank k.
