Significance Biomolecules, such as proteins or nucleic acids, can condense into liquid droplets whose biological or technological function depends on interactions with other solutes. We explore such interactions using a system of self-assembled DNA particles that forms liquid droplets which are degraded by an active solute, a restriction enzyme. We find that enzymes are able to penetrate the droplets when the liquid is poised near the phase boundary, enhancing the degradation rate and, in certain cases, causing internal bubbling. These results point to a complex interplay of phase stability and solute transport in liquid–liquid phase-separating macromolecular systems.

The feasibility of using charge coupled devices in an IPM for processing synthetic aperture radar signals onboard the NASA Convair 990 (CV990) aircraft was demonstrated. Radar data onboard the aircraft was recorded and processed using a CCD sampler and digital tape recorder. A description of equipment and testing was provided. The derivation of the digital presum filter was documented. Photographs of the sampler/tape recorder, real time display and circuit boards in the IPM were also included.
A solid-state transformer (SST) comprises a transformer core, a primary winding, a secondary winding, a primary-side switch bank, and a secondary-side switch bank. Each of the switch banks includes six 4-quadrant switches. The twelve 4-quadrant switches are toggled on and off over six clock cycles in a repetitive sequence with a period that is a function of a desired operating frequency of the transformer. The sequence is configured such that at any given time, 2 of 3 input and output phases are connected to the primary and secondary windings. The SST further includes L-C filter circuits that are configured to filter high-frequency components of current and voltage waveforms such that these components are not back-fed to the electrical mains or delivered to a load. The SST includes a primary-side filter circuit and a secondary-side filter circuit that can each include respective L-C filters for three input or output phases.
Signal detection techniques for discrete- frequency, phase-coherent pulse frequency modulation telemetry system, using analog and digital circuits
This paper reviews the data rate, error rate, and signal-to-noise ratio relationship for various uncoded M-ary digital amplitude modulation (AM), phase modulation (PM), and combined AM-PM systems. These signal systems have the common virtue that expanding the number of possible signals to be transmitted increases the data rate but not the bandwidth. A general treatment of the error rate of M-ary digital AM-PM permits development of a simple yet accurate expression which approximates the increase in average signal-to-noise ratio (over that of binary phase shift keying) required for constant error performance. This equation provides insight into why arrays differ in their signal-to-noise ratio requirements.
A waveguide Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator and an interdigitated photoconductive detector designed to operate at 820 nm, fabricated on different GaAlAs/GaAs heterostructure materials, are being investigated for use in optical interconnects in phased array antenna systems. Measured optical attenuation effects in the modulator are discussed and the observed modulation performance up to 1 GHz is presented. Measurements of detector frequency response are described and results presented.

A CMOS-compatible actuator platform for implementing phase, amplitude, and frequency modulation in silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits via piezo-optomechanical coupling using tightly mechanically coupled aluminum nitride actuators is disclosed. The platform, which may be fabricated in a CMOS foundry, enables scalable active photonic integrated circuits for visible wavelengths, and the piezoelectric actuation functions without performance degradation down to cryogenic operating temperatures. A number of devices are possible, including ring modulator devices, phase shifter devices, Mach-Zehnder interferometer devices, directional coupler devices (including tunable directional coupler devices), and acousto-optic modulator and frequency shifter devices, each of which can employ the same AlN actuator platform. As all of these devices can be built on the same AlN actuator platform, numerous optical functions can be implemented on a single die.

During April, May, and July of 1978, HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of Cygnus X-1, was repeatedly observed in the ultraviolet with the IUE satellite. Some X-ray and infrared observations have been made during the same period. The general shape of the spectrum is that expected from a late O supergiant. Strong absorption features are apparent in the ultraviolet, some of which have been identified. The equivalent widths of the most prominent lines appear to be modulated with the orbital phase. This modulation is discussed in terms of the ionization contours calculated by Hatchett and McCray, for a binary X-ray source in the stellar wind of the companion.
The error signal which is used to control the frequency of the quartz crystal oscillator of a passive rubidium cell frequency standard is considered. The value of the slope of this signal, for an interrogation frequency close to the atomic transition frequency is calculated and measured for various phase (or frequency) modulation waveforms, and for several values of the modulation frequency. A theoretical analysis is made using a model which applies to a system in which the optical pumping rate, the relaxation rates and the RF field are homogeneous. Results are given for sine-wave phase modulation, square-wave frequency modulation and square-wave phase modulation. The influence of the modulation frequency on the slope of the error signal is specified. It is shown that the modulation frequency can be chosen as large as twice the non-saturated full-width at half-maximum without a drastic loss of the sensitivity to an offset of the interrogation frequency from center line, provided that the power saturation factor and the amplitude of modulation are properly adjusted.

The phase of the 11-yr galactic cosmic ray variation, due to a varying rate of emission of long-lived, propagating regions of enhanced scattering, travels faster than the scattering regions themselves. The radial speed of the 11-yr phase in the quasi-steady force field approximation is exactly twice the speed of the individual episodic decreases. A time-dependent numerical solution for 1-GeV protons at 1 and 30 AU gives a phase speed which is 1.85 times the propagation speed of the individual decreases.
Report presents theoretical study of behavior of Costas loop in reception of radio carrier signal modulated in phase by sinusoidal or square-wave subcarrier, further modulated in phase by nonreturn-to-zero binary data signal. Phase and frequency of received signal affected by Doppler shift, and instantaneous amplitude of received signal corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise. Signals of this type ordinarily used in spacecraft telemetry, sine-wave subcarrier being preferred for shorter signal paths and square-wave subcarrier for longer signal paths.
High-luminosity particle collider experiments such as theones planned at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider requireever-greater vertexing precision of the tracking detectors, necessitating reductions in the material budget of the detectors.Traditionally, the fractional radiation length (x/X$_{0}$) ofdetectors is either estimated using known properties of theconstituent materials, or measured in dedicated runs of the finaldetector. In this paper, we present a method of direct measurementof the material budget of a CMS prototype module designed for thePhase-2 upgrade of the CMS detector using a 40–65 MeV positronbeam. A total of 630 million events were collected at the PaulScherrer Institut PiE1 experimental area using a three-planetelescope consisting of the prototype module as the central plane, surrounded by two MALTA monolithic pixel detectors. Fractionalradiation lengths were extracted from scattering angle distributionsusing the Highland approximation for multiple scattering. Astatistical technique recovered runs suffering from triggerdesynchronisation, and several corrections were introduced tocompensate for local inefficiencies related to geometric and beamshape constraints. Two regions of the module were surveyed andyielded average x/X$_{0}$ values of (0.72 ± 0.05)% and(0.95 ± 0.09)%, which are compatible with empirical estimatesfor these regions computed from known material properties of 0.753%and 0.892%, respectively. Two types of higher-granularity maps ofthe fractional radiation length were produced, subdivided eitherinto rectangular regions of uniform size, or polygonal-shapedregions of uniform material composition. The results bode well forthe CMS Phase-2 upgrade modules, which will play a key role in theminimisation of the material of the upgraded detector.
