Application of passive vortex generators to enhance vertical mixing in an open raceway pond

A novel use of vortex generators in a raceway pond is described here, with the flow field quantitatively simulated using computational fluid dynamics using the large eddy simulation turbulence model. Persistence lengths of the swirling motion generated by the vortex generators indicate that significant vertical mixing can be achieved by placing vortex generators in the straight section opposite the paddle wheel, downstream of the first hairpin bend. Relatively simple vortex generators are capable of creating stronger swirling motions that persist for a longer distance than those created by the paddle wheel. For optimal performance, vortex generators are positioned side by side but in opposite directions, and their diameters should be equal to or slightly less than the desired liquid depth. The optimal length of a 0.18 m diameter vortex generator in a 0.2 m deep pond was determined to be 0.3 m. As a result, it has been demonstrated that a longer persistence length is achieved by inducing a swirling motion with its rotational axis parallel to the primary flow direction.

Effect of framework Al pairing on NO storage properties of Pd-CHA passive NOx adsorbers

For this study, three Pd/H-CHA samples were prepared containing 53.0%, 10.8% and 6.5% paired Al sites at near fixed Si/Al ratio and similar Pd loading. According to H 2 temperature-programmed reduction, Pd was present almost exclusively as isolated cations in the two samples containing the higher concentrations of paired Al sites, whereas in the other sample PdO was also present. Simulated lean cold start tests on the fresh samples conducted in a microflow reactor showed that the sample containing PdO stored the lowest amount of NOx. When tested with CO/H 2 , the sample containing 53.0% paired Al sites showed significantly better storage capacity than the other samples and deactivated less rapidly upon sequential tests. Experiments using lean gasoline engine exhaust revealed similar trends. This study showed that a high concentration of paired Al sites in Pd/H-CHA is beneficial for NOx storage capacity, thermal durability, and minimizing deactivation in the presence of CO/H 2 .

The origin of passivity in aluminum-manganese solid solutions

In this work, the effects of manganese on the aqueous corrosion of aluminum-manganese alloys were investigated by experiments and atomistic simulations. Electrochemical measurements, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atom probe tomography analysis indicate that manganese addition enhanced the corrosion resistance of aluminum without participating in the surface oxidation. Furthermore, the selective dissolution of manganese was believed to increase the free volume at the metal/oxide interface to facilitate the formation of a denser, thinner oxide layer with closer to stoichiometry composition. Atomistic simulations showed that the oxide layer compactness increased, and defect density decreased with increasing free volume content in Al, resulting in enhanced barrier characteristics.

Localized corrosion: Passive film breakdown vs. Pit growth stability, Part VI: Pit dissolution kinetics of different alloys and a model for pitting and repassivation potentials

Here, the pitting resistance of SS316L, SS304, SS430, and pure Fe was studied in chloride-containing solution. Among these alloys, SS316L exhibits the highest pit initiation rate, but also the highest pitting potential. To explain this phenomenon, the maximum pit dissolution current density (i diss, max ) of the alloys in saturated pit solution was measured using one-dimensional artificial pit electrodes. A lower i diss, max was found to correlate with higher pitting and repassivation potentials. Based on a recently proposed pitting framework, a conceptual model for pitting and repassivation potentials was established, based on which the effect of i diss, max on pitting resistance was discussed.
