Robustness Analysis of Integrated LPV-FDI Filters and LTI-FTC System for a Transport Aircraft

This paper proposes an analysis framework for robustness analysis of a nonlinear dynamics system that can be represented by a polynomial linear parameter varying (PLPV) system with constant bounded uncertainty. The proposed analysis framework contains three key tools: 1) a function substitution method which can convert a nonlinear system in polynomial form into a PLPV system, 2) a matrix-based linear fractional transformation (LFT) modeling approach, which can convert a PLPV system into an LFT system with the delta block that includes key uncertainty and scheduling parameters, 3) micro-analysis, which is a well known robust analysis tool for linear systems. The proposed analysis framework is applied to evaluating the performance of the LPV-fault detection and isolation (FDI) filters of the closed-loop system of a transport aircraft in the presence of unmodeled actuator dynamics and sensor gain uncertainty. The robustness analysis results are compared with nonlinear time simulations.

Spacecraft attitude determination using a second-order nonlinear filter

The stringent attitude determination accuracy and faster slew maneuver requirements demanded by present-day spacecraft control systems motivate the development of recursive nonlinear filters for attitude estimation. This paper presents the second-order filter development for the estimation of attitude quaternion using three-axis gyro and star tracker measurement data. Performance comparisons have been made by computer simulation of system models and filter mechanization. It is shown that the second-order filter consistently performs better than the extended Kalman filter when the performance index of the root sum square estimation error of the quaternion vector is compared. The second-order filter identifies the gyro drift rates faster than the extended Kalman filter. The uniqueness of this algorithm is the online generation of the time-varying process and measurement noise covariance matrices, derived as a function or the process and measurement nonlinearity, respectively.

New Mathematical Functions for Vacuum System Analysis

A new bivariate function has been found that provides solutions of integrals having the form u (sup minus eta) e (sup u) du which arise when developing predictions for the behavior of pressure within a rigid volume under high vacuum conditions in the presence of venting as well as sources characterized by power law transient decay over the range [0,1] for eta and for u greater than or equal to 0. A few properties of the new function are explored in this work. For instance the eta equals 1/2 case reproduces the Dawson function. In addition, a slight variation of the solution technique reproduces the exponential integral for eta equals 1. The technique used to generate these functions leads to an approach for solving a more general class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, with the potential for identifying other new functions that solve other integrals.

A control problem for Burgers' equation with bounded input/output

A stabilization problem for Burgers' equation is considered. Using linearization, various controllers are constructed which minimize certain weighted energy functionals. These controllers produce the desired degree of stability for the closed-loop nonlinear system. A numerical scheme for computing the feedback gain functional is developed and several numerical experiments are performed to show the theoretical results.

Determining Spacecraft Reaction Wheel Friction Parameters

Software was developed to characterize the drag in each of the Cassini spacecraft's Reaction Wheel Assemblies (RWAs) to determine the RWA friction parameters. This tool measures the drag torque of RWAs for not only the high spin rates (greater than 250 RPM), but also the low spin rates (less than 250 RPM) where there is a lack of an elastohydrodynamic boundary layer in the bearings. RWA rate and drag torque profiles as functions of time are collected via telemetry once every 4 seconds and once every 8 seconds, respectively. Intermediate processing steps single-out the coast-down regions. A nonlinear model for the drag torque as a function of RWA spin rate is incorporated in order to characterize the low spin rate regime. The tool then uses a nonlinear parameter optimization algorithm based on the Nelder-Mead simplex method to determine the viscous coefficient, the Dahl friction, and the two parameters that account for the low spin-rate behavior.

Transient response of joint dominated space structures - A new linearization technique

The linearization method presented for calculating the transient responses of nonlinear systems due to initial disturbances is an extension of the 'describing function' approach, in which the system's steady-state response is calculated by representing such nonlinear elements as space structure joints with impedances that are functions of response amplitude. It is shown that, for the transient case, the steady-state impedances can be averaged over the range of responses in order to furnish equivalent values of stiffness and damping; these, for a given set of initial displacements, may be treated as constant during calculations of system response.

X-ray, optical, and IR luminosity correlations in quasars

For a sample of 88 radio-quiet quasars that includes 12 X-ray upper limits, it is found that the X-ray and IR luminosities follow a significantly nonlinear relation that is consistent with that found for the X-ray and optical luminosities. The redshift dependence is weak and may be nonexistent. Since the optical through IR continuum of quasars is much the same shape as a function of luminosity, this implies that the nonlinear relation between the X-ray luminosity and the optical and IR luminosities is due to a systematic change in the X-ray continuum of quasars with increasing luminosity. Either the X-ray continuum must flatten with increasing luminosity, or the overall normalization relative to the optical and IR must decrease. Simple continuum models which link the IR and X-ray portions of the continuum by a single power law arising from the same synchrotron mechanism can be ruled out.

The inverse problem of the optimal regulator.

The inverse problem of the optimal regulator is considered for a general class of multi-input systems with integral-type performance indices. A new phase variable canonical form is shown to be convenient for this analysis. The advantage of the canonical form is to separate the state variables into subvectors of directly controlled, indirectly controlled, and uncontrollable components. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimized performance indices are given. With the nonlinearities of the system restricted to functions of the directly controlled state variables, additional results are developed about the nonnegative property of optimized loss functions.

A strictly Markovian expansion for plasma turbulence theory

The collision operator that appears in the equation of motion for a particle distribution function that was averaged over an ensemble of random Hamiltonians is non-Markovian. It is non-Markovian in that it involves a propagated integral over the past history of the ensemble averaged distribution function. All formal expansions of this nonlinear collision operator to date preserve this non-Markovian character term by term yielding an integro-differential equation that must be converted to a diffusion equation by an additional approximation. An expansion is derived for the collision operator that is strictly Markovian to any finite order and yields a diffusion equation as the lowest nontrivial order. The validity of this expansion is seen to be the same as that of the standard quasilinear expansion.
