A study to analyze six band multispectral images and fabricate a Fourier transform detector

An automatic Fourier transform diffraction pattern sampling system, used to investigate techniques for forestry classification of six band multispectral aerial photography is presented. Photographs and diagrams of the design, development and fabrication of a hybrid optical-digital Fourier transform detector are shown. The detector was designed around a concentric ring fiber optic array. This array was formed from many optical fibers which were sorted into concentric rings about a single fiber. All the fibers in each ring were collected into a bundle and terminated into a single photodetector. An optical/digital interface unit consisting of a high level multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital amplifier was also constructed and is described.

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.

A low-cost multiple-channel 12-GHz receiver for satellite television broadcasting

The design of a low-cost FM-microwave satellite-ground-station receiver is described. It is capable of accepting 12 contiguous color-television equivalent-bandwidth channels in the 11.72-12.2-GHz band using a wide-band FM format and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) of the channels. Each channel has 36 MHz of usable bandwidth with a 4-MHz guard band and provides a CATV compatible output. The overall system specifications are first discussed. Then consideration is given to the design, fabrication, and evaluation of the different subsystems in the receiver.

Self-scanned Digicon - A digital image tube for astronomical spectroscopy

We have successfully fabricated, tested, and operated a digital image tube consisting of a magnetically focused image intensifier tube in which a self-scanned linear array of 1024 silicon photodiodes operating in the EBS mode serves as the photoelectron image detector, amplifier, and intermediate image storage device. Integral on-chip MOS shift registers driven by an external clock sequentially interrogate the photodiodes through MOS FET multiplex switch arrays. Each output frame is a sequence of 256 analog pulses on each of four video lines. Laboratory and observing tests show that the output signal is photoelectron shot noise limited over at least a range of 1-100,000 detected photoelectrons per picture element, indicating that single photon detection is achieved. High-resolution astronomical spectroscopy has been carried out in the coude spectrograph of the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory. Examples are shown.

High efficiency conical scanner for earth resources applications

A description is given of a six-arm conical scanner which was selected to provide a continuous line-of-sight scan. Two versions of the instrument are considered. The two versions differ in their weight. The weight of the heavy version is 600 lbs. A light weight design which employs beryllium and aluminum optical components weighs only 350 lbs. A multiplexer and analog-to-digital converter are to be incorporated into the design. Questions of instrument performance are also discussed.

Propeller modulation effects on a scanning-beam microwave landing system

The results of a systems study and ground test of the effects of propeller modulation on a time-multiplexed, scanning-beam microwave landing system (MLS) are presented. Propeller modulation effects are analyzed in terms of spacing between receiving antenna and propeller, propeller blade width, and propeller speed. Principal study conclusions: (1) scanning beam MLS is susceptible to errors due to synchronous propeller modulation; (2) the number of synchronous interference multiples increases as the number of propeller blades increases and as the data rate decreases; (3) the probability of synchronous interference decreases at higher data rates; and (4) MLS receiver susceptibility to propeller modulation depends upon the dynamic response of the receiver automatic gain control and the respective tracking loops.

A multichannel implantable telemetry system for flow, pressure, and ECG measurements

The design, principles of operation, and performance of an implantable miniaturized (48 cu cm in volume) multiplex telemetry system for simultaneous measurement of up to eight physiological parameters (including cardiovascular data) are described. Integrated circuits are used to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of fabrication. Power consumption is reduced using recently developed complementary MOS devices. PWM technique is selected as it is relatively easy to implement, lends itself to ICs, and provides an accurate means of transmitting data. The system is totally implantable within the chest of a test animal, with no wire penetrating through the skin. It is shown that the described system permits repeated measurement of the physiological effects of a variety of interventions in awake unanesthetized animals.

Possible methods for USSR-VLF navigation receivers

The U.S.S.R. has a VLF navigation system similar to OMEGA. Beukers has reported some information on the signal format, frequencies used, and the probable radiated power levels. From this data it appears possible to derive receiver operation modes and some implied reasons for the unique choice of the time-multiplexed frequency time base used. Of interest are receiver methods requiring processor gate complexity similar to a digital wristwatch including the use of mass-produced low frequency quartz crystal reference oscillators. The stability required of the local reference oscillator is probably much less critical than for other VLF receivers because of the signal format. One conclusion is that U.S.S.R.-VLF receivers might be fabricated at quite low cost making it possible for all persons in remote areas each to have his own private positioning aid. Further study of the actual transmitted signal format is warranted. While the nature of this memorandum is speculative because of the lack of confirming data, the receiver method proposed has evolved from related principles which have been applied to the operating OMEGA-VLF navigation system.

Apollo experience report: Real-time display system

The real time display system used in the Apollo Program is described; the systematic organization of the system, which resulted from hardware/software trade-offs and the establishment of system criteria, is emphasized. Each basic requirement of the real time display system was met by a separate subsystem. The computer input multiplexer subsystem, the plotting display subsystem, the digital display subsystem, and the digital television subsystem are described. Also described are the automated display design and the generation of precision photographic reference slides required for the three display subsystems.

Evaluation of several navigation algorithms for application to general aviation

Using data obtained in flight, three position determining algorithms for use by general aviation aircraft were evaluated representing increasing software requirements. These were a DME only, DME/air data and blended DME/air data. Although each step represented additional software with resultant increase in position accuracy, all could be performed on a programmable electronic desk calculator. Results from the computation of aircraft position using the three algorithms are presented. The algorithms employed can be extended to accept VOR, TACAN bearing, ADF, or other NAVAID Data. To obtain the flight data an experimental system was configured and flown on a general aviation aircraft. Principal hardware elements (all with low-cost potential) were a programmable calculator, a single DME receiver (multiplexed for multiple DME use) and a low-cost air speed sensor (shed-vortex principle). The flight test demonstrated satisfactory performance of these principal elements.

Hadamard transform imager and imaging spectrometer

An imager and a spectrometric imager, which achieve multiplexing by the use of binary optical encoding masks, have been built and tested. The masks are based on orthogonal, pseudorandom digital codes derived from Hadamard matrices. The spatial (and/or spectral) data are therefore obtained in the form of a Hadamard transform of the spatial (and/or spectral) scene. Computer algorithms are used to decode the data and reconstruct images of the original scene. The hardware, algorithms processing and display facility are described. A number of spatial and spatial/spectral images, obtained in the laboratory, are presented.

The geostationary operational environmental satellite /GOES/ imaging communication system

The SMS/GOES Satellite obtains day and night weather information from synchronous geostationary orbit by means of (1) earth imaging, (2) collection of environmental data from ground based sensors, platforms, and (3) monitoring of the space environment. SMS-1 and SMS-2 have been in orbit for 17 months and 8 months, respectively, and are presently taking full earth disk images in the visible and infrared every 30 minutes. SMS-1 is positioned to cover the eastern portion of the U.S. while SMS-2 is positioned to cover the western portion. This paper provides a general overview of the imaging communication portions of the SMS/GOES, related to the image data encoding and transmission as well as the method of the data time multiplexing and the manner in which the scan line to line synchronization is achieved.

Multichannel implantable telemetry system

Multiplexed biotelemetry system for animal research combines several power-saving features. Implantable sensor measures up to eight parameters simultaneously, including blood flow. Microamp transistors, switching circuits, and CMOS technology are used to lower power requirements. However, when blood flow is monitored, these measures are insufficient to reduce power enough for long-term operation from implantable primary battery.
