A study of space shuttle structural integrity test and assessment. Part 1

The ultrasonics technique for assessing the structural integrity of the primary surface of the space shuttle vehicles is discussed and evaluated. Analysis was made of transducers, transducer coupling test structure fabrication, flaws, and ultrasonic testing. Graphs of microphone response curves from the initial noise tests, accelerometer response curves from the final noise tests, and microphone curves from the final noise tests are included along with a glossary, bibliography, and results.

Design of propellant acquisition systems for advanced cryogenic space propulsion systems

This paper presents results of work conducted to expand the technology base and evolve practical propellant surface tension acquisition system designs for future cryogenic space vehicles. Surface tension screen device channel flow analysis and supporting tests showed that reasonable mesh sizes could provide the required retention performance. Integrated subsystem studies and development showed that practical and effective screen surface tension acquisition devices could be designed for typical applications, but that other interfacing feed subsystems are often constrained by the design of the particular acquisition device. These constraints may dominate the total feed system performance.

Perturbed nonlinear differential equations

For perturbed nonlinear systems, a norm, other than the supremum norm, is introduced on some spaces of continuous functions. This makes possible the study of new types of behavior. A study is presented on a perturbed nonlinear differential equation defined on a half line, and the existence of a family of solutions with special boundedness properties is established. The ideas developed are applied to the study of integral manifolds, and examples are given.

Integrated orbital servicing and payloads study. Volume 1: Executive summary

A study is summarized in which a comparison was made of the following modes of maintaining a satellite system: (1) expendable mode in which failed satellites are replaced, (2) on-orbit servicing where a satellite can be fixed by unmanned module exchange in space, and (3) ground refurbishment in which the satellite is brought back to ground for repairs. It was concluded that on-orbit maintenance is the most cost-effective mode and that it is technically feasible. It can be used to repair failed satellites, to improve reliability of operating satellites, and to update equipment. On-orbit servicing can increase program flexibility and satellite reliability, lifetime, and availability. The significant conclusions and results of two studies are summarized.

Remote Sensing: A valuable tool in the Forest Service decision making process

Forest Service studies for integrating remotely sensed data into existing information systems highlight a need to: (1) re-examine present methods of collecting and organizing data, (2) develop an integrated information system for rapidly processing and interpreting data, (3) apply existing technological tools in new ways, and (4) provide accurate and timely information for making right management decisions. The Forest Service developed an integrated information system using remote sensors, microdensitometers, computer hardware and software, and interactive accessories. Their efforts substantially reduce the time it takes for collecting and processing data.

Thermal-structural design study of an airframe-integrated Scramjet

Design concepts are developed and evaluated for a cooled structures assembly for the Scramjet engine, for engine subsystems mass, volume, and operating requirements, and for the aircraft/engine interface. A thermal protection system was defined that makes it possible to attain a life of 100 hours and 1000 cycles. The coolant equivalence ratio at the Mach 10 maximum thermal loading condition is 0.6, indicating a capacity for airframe cooling. The mechanical design is feasible for manufacture using conventional materials. For the cooled structures in a six-module engine, the mass per unit capture area is 12.4 KN/sq m. The total weight of a six-module engine assembly including the fuel system is 14.73 KN.

High angle of incidence implications upon air intake design and location for supersonic cruise aircraft and highly maneuverable transonic aircraft

The effects of angle of attack on supersonic mixed compression inlet performance at four different locations about a hypothetical forebody are given. A computational method to predict optimum inlet location, orientation, and centerbody control schedule for design and off-design performance is described. The effects of inlet location and a forward canard on the angle-of-attack performance of a normal shock inlet at transonic speeds were studied. Proper integration of inlet location and a forward canard can enhance the angle-of-attack performance of a normal shock inlet. Two lower lip treatments for improving the angle-of-attack performance of rectangular inlets at transonic speeds are discussed.

Gas-turbine critical research and advanced technology support project

The technical progress made during the first 15 months of a planned 40-month project to provide a critical-technology data base for utility gas-turbine systems capable of burning coal-derived fuels is summarized. Tasks were included in the following areas: (1) combustion, to study the combustion of coal-derived fuels and conversion of fuel-bound nitrogen to NOx; (2) materials, to understand and prevent hot corrosion; and (3) system studies, to integrate and guide the other technologies. Significant progress was made.

Thermal-structural Design Study of an Airframe-integrated Scramjet

Design concepts for the cooled structures assembly for the Langley Scramjet engine, for engine subsystems, and for the aircraft/engine interface were developed and evaluated. Results show that the objectives for the Scramjet engine can be met. A thermal protection system was defined that makes it possible to attain a life of 100 hours and 1000 cycles, which is the specified goal. With stoichiometric combustion, the fuel provides an adequate heat sink for cooling the engine at Mach numbers up to 9 at the minimum fuel flow condition. The mechanical design is feasible for manufacture using conventional materials. For the cooled structures in a six-module engine, the mass per unit capture area is 1328 kg/sq m (259 lb/sq ft). The total mass of a six-module engine assembly including the fuel system is 1577 kg (3477 lb).
