Grid Resilience Analysis on Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Implementation Alongside Four Existing Oil and Gas Wells in Tuttle, Oklahoma: Preprint

This study builds on the existing techno-economic and environmental life cycle assessments performed for a geothermal district heating and cooling system implementation in Tuttle Oklahoma with four existing oil and gas wells. Its resilience in meeting the peak annual heating and cooling loads of the district assuming a temporary disconnection from the electrical grid is assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Attributes of resilience and qualitative criteria established by Kolker et al. (2022) for geothermal district heating systems are applied to the proposed case to highlight its vulnerabilities. Results indicate that increasing the redundancy and diversity in the physical configuration of the distributional piping can considerably increase the system’s resilience. A quantitative assessment executed via the REopt tool predicts that the ancillary electricity required to power the geothermal system’s heating and cooling can be met by an onsite emergency diesel generator during times of grid outages for over 28 days.

Implementation of Surface Tension on a Reacting Flow Solver, PeleLM: Preprint

In liquid rocket engines, the fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber in the liquid state though injectors. Such fuel undergoes atomization, vaporization, and combustion processes. To design reliable and efficient injectors, it is required to understand the full processes. This research is part of an effort to develop a full atomization-vaporization-combustion solver from first principles. As an initial step to tackle the atomization process, a multiphase flow solver is under development. For the development, a library of the volume of fluid scheme for multiphase, IRL is coupled with a reacting Navier-Stokes equation solver, PeleLM. Furthermore, as the surface tension has considerable effects on spray breakup. surface tension is implemented in the momentum equation using the continuum surface force model and the improved height function technique.

The Tiny Median Filter: A Small Size, Flexible Arbitrary Percentile Finder Scheme Suitable for FPGA Implementation

This document reports the design, implementation and testing of a small silicon resource usage, very flexible arbitrary percentile finding scheme called the Tiny Median Filter. It can be used not only as a median filter in image processing with square filtering windows, but also for applications of any percentile filter or maximum or minimum finder with any size of data set as long as the number of bits of the data is finite. It opens possibilities for image processing tasks with non-square or irregular filter windows. In this scheme, data swapping or data bit manipulating are avoided and high functional efficiency of the logic components is applied to save silicon resources. Some logic functions are absorbed into other functions to further reduce the complexity. The combinational logic paths are designed to be sufficiently short so that the firmware can be compiled to the maximum operating frequency allowed by the block memories of the FPGA devices. The Tiny Median Filter receives, processes and output data in non-stop manner with no irregular timing which helps to simplify design of surrounding stages.

A Practical guide to Parsing MCNP Inputs: Lessons Learned from Implementing Context-Free Parsing in MontePy

Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) is a widely used Monte Carlo transport solver that began development in the 1960’s. Due to this MCNP input files uses a custom input syntax, for which there are no off-the-shelf parsing libraries available. For MontePy to create an effective Object-Oriented interface for MCNP input files, an context-free parser was implemented to be able to fully parse the files. MontePy uses a number of shortcuts and optimizations to avoid creating a single universal input file parser. . These lessons can be applied to working with the many other custom input syntax languages persistent throughout the nuclear industry.

Implementing an Objectives-Driven, Risk-Informed, and Case-Assured Approach to Safety and Mission Success at NASA

NASA is developing a “Standard for Assurance of Space Flight Safety and Mission Success” that implements an objectives-driven, risk-informed, and case-assured approach to safety and mission success (S&MS) for NASA space flight programs and projects. The standard aligns with the philosophy of risk leadership that has recently been established in NASA policy to assure acceptable levels of flight crew safety and mission success risk. It is consistent with existing NASA risk management requirements and is compatible with NASA program management and systems engineering requirements. The methodology described in the standard is presented in terms of an S&MS assurance framework that is designed to allow substantial flexibility in the specific means by which programs and projects achieve acceptable mission S&MS risk. Such flexibility is necessary to accommodate the increasingly broad range of acquisition strategies employed by NASA, including commercial transportation services, as well as to accommodate the increasingly rapid evolution of space flight-related technologies and practices. A key feature of the S&MS assurance framework is the specification of S&MS success criteria for each life-cycle review (LCR). The S&MS assurance case is structured around these criteria, the satisfaction of which indicates that the program/project is adhering to the S&MS risk posture. This enables the evolving S&MS assurance case to be used as a fundamental program/project submittal at each LCR, where its inherent structure of argument, supported by evidence, directly supports the evaluation of the program/project with respect to the S&MS success criteria, and by extension, the S&MS risk posture. As such, the S&MS assurance case is integral to program/project systems engineering, risk management, and S&MS oversight activities, and provides the principal basis for S&MS risk acceptance by the Decision Authority throughout the program/project life cycle.

An Arbitrary Time Interval Generator Base on Vernier Clocks with 0.67 ps Adjustable Steps Implemented in FPGA

In TDC testing and timing system implementations, it is often necessary to generate signal pulses with finely adjustable time intervals. In delay cell–based schemes, the adjustment resolution is constrained by the propagation delay of the cells—typically 15–20 ps per step—and is sensitive to temperature and supply voltage variations. This document presents a fully digital approach that uses two vernier clocks, generated by two stages of cascaded phase-locked loops (PLLs) with a slight frequency difference, to achieve adjustable timing intervals through accumulated phase differences. The scheme was validated on two families of low-cost FPGA devices, achieving adjustable step sizes of 0.67 ps and 0.97 ps.

Practical Implementation of GPU-based Computing at the Grid Edge for Resilience Scenarios

This paper presents a practical implementation of GPU-accelerated computing at the grid edge to enhance power system resilience through next-generation smart meters. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems rely predominantly on centralized processing architectures, which limit real-time response capabilities during grid disturbances. This work proposes the integration of GPU-enabled computational platforms directly within smart meter to enable local execution support for power system analytics, fault detection algorithms, and optimization routines. The proposed framework uses the Julia programming language to leverage highperformance parallel computing capabilities while maintaining code portability and development efficiency. We use two experimental scenarios to benchmark the computational feasibility of this approach: sparse linear system solutions representative of power flow analyses, and multi-stage production cost simulations incorporating unit commitment and economic dispatch operations. Results demonstrate that computationally intensive power system algorithms, such as those supporting resilience scenario calculations, can be effectively executed at the distribution edge using commercially available embedded GPU hardware. Keywords—GPU acceleration, edge computing, smart meters, grid resilience, AMI, resilience.

Categorizing Plug Load Solutions by Ease of Implementation

Plug loads account for a growing share of U.S. commercial building electricity use, projected to rise from 16% today to 21% by 2050. Managing these loads presents a substantial opportunity for reducing energy costs while providing additional operational benefits, such as improved asset management and occupant comfort. Despite their potential, plug loads are numerous, diverse, and highly occupant-dependent, making control challenging. This publication organizes plug load control strategies by level of effort, offering building owners and operators a staged approach to implement interventions ranging from smart outlets and automatic receptacle controls to behavioral strategies. By following these actionable steps, building stakeholders can reduce energy consumption, lower utility bills, and realize broader operational advantages.

Modular Accelerator Robotics Framework Implementation For Accelerator Inspection

Accelerator tunnels, such as the ones at Fermilab, remain highly radioactive after beam shutoff due to induced radiation from the beam. This residual radiation creates a hazardous environment for manual inspection and repair of beamline components. To minimize worker radiation dose and reduce beam downtime, the AD Robotics Initiative previously built a fleet of low-cost custom mobile robots. However, the custom Python sockets server-client architecture lacked standardization, causing development delays and complicating the integration of new sensors and actuators. Here, we developed a modular system using ROS2 and Docker to standardize the teleoperation and control interfaces. This system was validated by implementing a teleoperation controller with real-time, low-latency, and high-definition video feedback. The aim of this framework is for a new feature or even a robot to be integrated into the system simply by documenting the hardware configuration. Current integration of LiDAR, Odometry, and Depth Cameras provides the foundation for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) tasks. Finally, future work involves integration into the accelerator control system and the attachment of a 6 degree-of-freedom robotic arm for telemanipulation.

Dynamic process intensification: Fundamentals and implementation to ternary distillation

Distillation remains a key technology for separating liquid mixtures. Its versatility comes with the disadvantage of high energy consumption. We previously used empirical arguments to introduce dynamic process intensification (DPI) as a strategy for improving the energy efficiency of binary distillation. In this article, we focus on ternary distillation; we begin by providing a rigorous basis for DPI, then formulate the problem of identifying the operating states for DPI as a nonlinear optimization problem. Via an extensive case study considering a hydrocarbon mixture, we demonstrate that reboiler energy use can be reduced by more than 2.3% relative to an equivalent column operating at steady state. Here, we prove that this result is due to the fact that DPI aims to satisfy product flow and quality constraints on average in time, affording broader opportunities for optimizing column economics than steady-state operation, where constraints are met strictly at all times.
