Mott insulators in moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at fractional fillings: Slave-rotor mean-field theory

In this study, we study a slave-rotor mean-field theory of an extended Hubbard model, applicable to transition metal dichalcogenide moiré systems, that captures both the formation of Wigner crystals as well as exotic spin states on top of these charge backgrounds. Phase diagrams are mapped out for different choices of long-range Coulomb repulsion strength, reproducing several experimentally found Wigner crystal states. Assuming unbroken time-reversal symmetry, we find several spin-liquid states as well as dimer states at fractional fillings. While spin dimer states are always found to have the lowest mean-field energy, several spin-liquid states are energetically competitive and may be stabilized by including gauge fluctuations or further interaction terms. We further discuss possible experimental signatures of these states pertinent to two-dimensional moiré heterostructures.

Time-reversal invariant topological moiré flat band: A platform for the fractional quantum spin Hall effect

Motivated by recent observation of the quantum spin Hall effect in monolayer germanene and twisted bilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDs), we study the topological phases of moir twisted bilayers with time-reversal symmetry and spin sz conservation. By using a continuum model description which can be applied to both germanene and TMD bilayers, we show that at small twist angles the emergent moir flat bands can be topologically nontrivial due to inversion symmetry breaking. Each of these flat bands admits a lowest-Landau-level description for each spin projection in the chiral limit and at magic twist angle. Furthermore, this allows for the construction of a many-body Laughlin state with time-reversal symmetry which can be stabilized by a short-range pseudopotential, and therefore serves as an ideal platform for realizing the so-far elusive fractional quantum spin Hall effect with emergent spin-1/2 U(1) symmetry.

Fractionalized excitations probed by ultrasound

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in 𝛼−RuCl 3 —a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and ℤ 2 -flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the magnetically ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with the presence of thermally excited ℤ 2 visons. Here, we demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in 𝛼−RuCl 3 and provide new insights into the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material.

Moment method and continued fraction expansion in Floquet operator Krylov space

Recursion methods such as Krylov techniques map complex dynamics to an effective noninteracting problem in one dimension. For example, the operator Krylov space for Floquet dynamics can be mapped to the dynamics of an edge operator of the one-dimensional Floquet inhomogeneous transverse field Ising model (ITFIM), where the latter, after a Jordan-Wigner transformation, is a Floquet model of noninteracting Majorana fermions and the couplings correspond to Krylov angles. We present an application of this showing that a moment method exists where given an autocorrelation function, one can construct the corresponding Krylov angles and from that the corresponding Floquet ITFIM. Consequently, when no solutions for the Krylov angles are obtained, it indicates that the autocorrelation is not generated by unitary dynamics. We highlight this by studying certain special cases: stable m-period dynamics derived using the method of continued fractions, exponentially decaying, and power-law decaying stroboscopic dynamics. Remarkably, our examples of stable m-period dynamics correspond to m-period edge modes for the Floquet ITFIM where, deep in the chain, the couplings correspond to a critical phase. Furthermore our results pave the way to engineer Floquet systems with desired properties of edge modes and also provide examples of persistent edge modes in gapless Floquet systems.

Measurement of the fraction of jet longitudinal momentum carried by Λ c + baryons in p p collisions

Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by Λ c + baryons, z ∥ ch , in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton ( p p ) collisions at s = 13 TeV at the LHC, with Λ c + baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of 3 ≤ p T Λ c + < 15 GeV / c and 7 ≤ p T jet ch < 15 GeV / c , respectively. The z ∥ ch distribution is compared to a measurement of D 0 -tagged charged jets in p p collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include color correlations beyond leading-color in the string formation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Weyl Semimetals

Weyl semimetal may be thought of as a gapless topological phase protected by the chiral anomaly, where the symmetries involved in the anomaly are the U(1) charge conservation and the crystal translational symmetry. The absence of a band gap in a weakly interacting Weyl semimetal is mandated by the electronic structure topology and is guaranteed as long as the symmetries and the anomaly are intact. The nontrivial topology also manifests in the Fermi arc surface states and topological response, in particular taking the form of an anomalous Hall effect in magnetic Weyl semimetals, whose magnitude is only determined by the location of the Weyl nodes in the Brillouin zone. In this work, we consider the situation when the interactions are not weak and ask whether it is possible to open a gap in a magnetic Weyl semimetal while preserving its nontrivial electronic structure topology along with the translational and the charge conservation symmetries. Surprisingly, the answer turns out to be yes. The resulting topologically ordered state provides a nontrivial realization of the fractional quantum Hall effect in three spatial dimensions in the absence of an external magnetic field, which cannot be viewed as a stack of two dimensional states. Our state contains loop excitations with nontrivial braiding statistics when linked with lattice dislocations.

Extremely Weakly Interacting ΔS z = 0 and ΔS z = 1 Excitations and Evidence for Fractional Quantization in a Magnetization Plateau: CeSb

The plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization $M_s$ in the metamagnet CeSb is accompanied by a state of ferromagnetic layers of spins in an up-up-down sequence. We measured M and the specific heat C in the plateau, spin wave analyses of which reveal two distinct branches of excitations. Those with $ΔS_z = 1$ as measured by M, coexist with a much larger population of $ΔS_z = 0$ excitations measured by C but invisible to M. The large density of $ΔS_z = 0$ excitations, their energy gap, and their seeming lack of interaction with $ΔS_z = 1$ excitations suggest an analogy with astrophysical dark matter. Furthermore, in the middle of the plateau three sharp jumps in M(H) are seen, the size of which, $0.15 \% M_s$, is consistent with fractional quantization of magnetization per site in the down-spin layers.

Half-Integer Conductance Plateau at the ν = 2 / 3 Fractional Quantum Hall State in a Quantum Point Contact

The v = 2/3 fractional quantum Hall state is the hole-conjugate state to the primary Laughlin v = 1/3 state. Here, we investigate transmission of edge states through quantum point contacts fabricated on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure designed to have a sharp confining potential. When a small but finite bias is applied, we observe an intermediate conductance plateau with G = 0.5⁢(e 2 /ℎ). This plateau is observed in multiple QPCs, and persists over a significant range of magnetic field, gate voltage, and source-drain bias, making it a robust feature. Using a simple model that considers scattering and equilibration between counterflowing charged edge modes, we find this half-integer quantized plateau to be consistent with full reflection of an inner counterpropagating -1/3 edge mode while the outer integer mode is fully transmitted. In a QPC fabricated on a different heterostructure which has a softer confining potential, we instead observe an intermediate conductance plateau at G = (1/3)⁢(e 2 /ℎ). These results provide support for a model at v = 2/3 in which the edge transitions from a structure having an inner upstream -1/3 charge mode and outer downstream integer mode to a structure with two downstream 1/3 charge modes when the confining potential is tuned from sharp to soft and disorder prevails.

Valley-Tunable Even-Denominator Fractional Quantum Hall State in the Lowest Landau Level of an Anisotropic System

Fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) at even-denominator Landau level filling factors (v) are of prime interest as they are predicted to host exotic, topological states of matter. Here, we report here the observation of a FQHS at v = 1/2 in a two-dimensional electron system of exceptionally high quality, confined to a wide AlAs quantum well, where the electrons can occupy multiple conduction-band valleys with an anisotropic effective mass. The anisotropy and multivalley degree of freedom offer an unprecedented tunability of the v = 1/2 FQHS as we can control both the valley occupancy via the application of in-plane strain, and the ratio between the strengths of the short- and long-range Coulomb interaction by tilting the sample in the magnetic field to change the electron charge distribution. Thanks to this tunability, we observe phase transitions from a compressible Fermi liquid to an incompressible FQHS and then to an insulating phase as a function of tilt angle. We find that this evolution and the energy gap of the v = 1/2 FQHS depend strongly on valley occupancy.

Delocalization and Universality of the Fractional Quantum Hall Plateau-to-Plateau Transitions

Disorder and electron-electron interaction play essential roles in the physics of electron systems in condensed matter. In two-dimensional, quantum Hall systems, extensive studies of disorder-induced localization have led to the emergence of a scaling picture with a single extended state, characterized by a power-law divergence of the localization length in the zero-temperature limit. Experimentally, scaling has been investigated via measuring the temperature dependence of plateau-to-plateau transitions between the integer quantum Hall states (IQHSs), yielding a critical exponent κ ≃ 0.42. Here, in this study, we report scaling measurements in the fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) regime where interaction plays a dominant role. Our Letter is partly motivated by recent calculations, based on the composite fermion theory, that suggest identical critical exponents in both IQHS and FQHS cases to the extent that the interaction between composite fermions is negligible. The samples used in our experiments are two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells of exceptionally high quality. We find that κ varies for transitions between different FQHSs observed on the flanks of Landau level filling factor v = 1/2 and has a value close to that reported for the IQHS transitions only for a limited number of transitions between high-order FQHSs with intermediate strength. We discuss possible origins of the nonuniversal κ observed in our experiments.

Measurement of the Ratios of Branching Fractions R ( D * ) and R ( D 0 )

The ratios of branching fractions $R(D*)$ ≡ $B(\overline{B} → D*τ^-\overline{ν}_μ$)/$B$($\overline{B}$ → $D*μ^-\overline{ν}_μ$) and $R$($D$ 0 ) ≡ $B$($B$ - → $D^0τ^-\overline{v}_τ$)/$B$($B$ - → $D^0μ^-\overline{v}_μ$) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb -1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode $τ^-$ → $μ^-ν_τ\overline{ν}_μ$. The measured values are $R$($D$*) = 0.281 ± 0.018 ± 0.024 and $R$($D$ 0 ) = 0.441 ± 0.060 ± 0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is $ρ$ = -0.43. The results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the standard model.

Experimental Validation of a Kinetic Ballooning Mode in High-Performance High-Bootstrap Current Fraction Fusion Plasmas

We report the observation of a set of coherent high frequency electromagnetic fluctuations that leads to a turbulence induced self-regulating phenomenon in the DIII-D high bootstrap current fraction plasma. The fluctuations have frequency of 130~220kHz, the poloidal wave length and phase velocity are 16~30 m -1 and ~30 km/s, respectively in the outboard midplane with the estimated toroidal mode number n~5- 9. The fluctuations are located in the internal transport barrier (ITB) region at large radius and are experimentally validated to be kinetic ballooning modes (KBM). Furthermore, quasilinear estimation predicts the KBM to be able to drive experimental particle flux and non-negligible thermal flux, suggesting its significant role in regulating the ITB saturation.

Magic Angles and Fractional Chern Insulators in Twisted Homobilayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

We explain the appearance of magic angles and fractional Chern insulators in twisted K-valley homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides by mapping their continuum model to a Landau level problem. Here, our approach relies on an adiabatic approximation for the quantum mechanics of valence band holes in a layer-pseudospin field that is valid for sufficiently small twist angles and on a lowest Landau level approximation that is valid for sufficiently large twist angles. It provides a simple qualitative explanation for the nearly ideal quantum geometry of the lowest moir´e miniband at particular twist angles, predicts that topological flat bands occur only when the valley-dependent moir´e potential is sufficiently strong compared to the interlayer tunneling amplitude, and provides a convenient starting point for the study of interactions.
