Pairwise‐Parallel Entangling Gates on Orthogonal Modes in a Trapped‐Ion Chain

Abstract Parallel operations are important for both near‐term quantum computers and larger‐scale fault‐tolerant machines because they reduce execution time and qubit idling. This study proposes and implements a pairwise‐parallel gate scheme on a trapped‐ion quantum computer. The gates are driven simultaneously on different sets of orthogonal motional modes of a trapped‐ion chain. This work demonstrates the utility of this scheme by creating a Greenberger‐Horne‐Zeilinger (GHZ) state in one step using parallel gates with one overlapping qubit. It also shows its advantage for circuits by implementing a digital quantum simulation of the dynamics of an interacting spin system, the transverse‐field Ising model. This method effectively extends the available gate depth by up to two times with no overhead when no overlapping qubit is involved, apart from additional initial cooling. This scheme can be easily applied to different trapped‐ion qubits and gate schemes, broadly enhancing the capabilities of trapped‐ion quantum computers.

Generalized entanglement entropies in two-dimensional conformal field theory

We introduce and study generalized Rényi entropies defined through the traces of products of Tr B (| Ψ i $\rangle$$\langle$Ψ j | ) where |Ψ i $\rangle$ are eigenstates of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). When |Ψ i $\rangle$ = |Ψ j $\rangle$ these objects reduce to the standard Rényi entropies of the eigenstates of the CFT. Exploiting the path integral formalism, we show that the second generalized Rényi entropies are equivalent to four point correlators. We then focus on a free bosonic theory for which the mode expansion of the fields allows us to develop an efficient strategy to compute the second generalized Rényi entropy for all eigenstates. As a byproduct, our approach also leads to new results for the standard Rényi and relative entropies involving arbitrary descendent states of the bosonic CFT.

Entanglement in De Sitter space

This paper expands on two recent proposals and, for generalizing the Ryu-Takayanagi and Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formulas to de Sitter space. The proposals (called the monolayer and bilayer proposals) are similar; both replace the boundary of AdS by the boundaries of static-patches — in other words event horizons. After stating the rules for each, we apply them to a number of cases and show that they yield results expected on other grounds. The monolayer and bilayer proposals often give the same results, but in one particular situation they disagree. To definitively decide between them we need to understand more about the nature of the thermodynamic limit of holographic systems.

Holographic entropy inequalities and multipartite entanglement

Abstract We study holographic entropy inequalities and their structural properties by making use of a judicious grouping of terms into certain multipartite information quantities. This allows us to recast cumbersome entropic expressions into much simpler ones which share interestingly rigid structures. By performing a systematic search over some of these structures, we are able to discover more than 1800 novel entropy inequalities for six parties, thereby demonstrating that these recastings provide a fruitful generating technique for uncovering new holographic entropy inequalities. In attempting to interpret the corresponding sign-definite quantities as correlation measures, we also obtain a no-go result: the superbalance property of holographic entropy inequalities turns out to preclude them from being monotonic under partial tracing. In the process, we also comment on the geometrical significance of multipartite information quantities and present various structural relations amongst them.

Mediated electrochemistry for redox-based biological targeting: entangling sensing and actuation for maximizing information transfer

Biology and electronics are both expert at receiving, analyzing, and responding to information, yet they use entirely different information processing paradigms. Biology processes information using networks that are intrinsically molecular while electronics process information through circuits that control the flow of electrons. There is great interest in coupling the molecular logic of biology with the electronic logic of technology, and we suggest that redox (reduction-oxidation) is a uniquely-suited modality for interfacing biology with electronics. Specifically, redox is a native biological modality and is accessible to electronics through electrodes. Here, we summarize recent advances in mediated electrochemistry to direct information transfer into biological systems intentionally altering function, exposing it for more advanced interpretation, which can dramatically expand the biotechnological toolbox.

A slip-spring framework to study relaxation dynamics of entangled wormlike micelles with kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm

Hypothesis: Wormlike micelles (WLMs) formed due to the self-assembly of amphiphiles in aqueous solution have similar viscoelastic properties as polymers. Owing to this similarity, in this work, it is postulated that kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) sampling of slip-springs dynamics, which is able to model the rheology of polymers, can also be extended to capture the relaxation dynamics of WLMs. Theory: The proposed modeling framework considers the following relaxation mechanisms: reptation, union-scission, and constraint release. Specifically, each of these relaxation mechanisms is simulated as separate kMC events that capture the relaxation dynamics while considering the living nature of WLMs within the slip-spring framework. As a case study, the model is implemented to a system of sodium oleate and sodium chloride to predict the linear rheology and the characteristic relaxation times associated with the individual relaxation mechanisms at different pH and salt concentrations. Findings: Linear rheology predictions were found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the calculated relaxation times highlighted that reptation contributed to a continuous increase in viscosity while union-scission contributed to the decrease in viscosity of WLM solutions at a higher salinity and pH. Finally, this manifests the proposed model’s capability to provide insights into the key processes governing WLM’s rheology.
