Nonlinear light-output calibration of the oxygenated xylene scintillators used in OMEGA neutron time-of-flight spectrometers

Neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) spectrometers are essential instruments for measuring and evaluating the performance of inertial confinement fusion implosions. The neutron spectrometers utilized for the OMEGA laser include two liquid-based scintillators, each consisting of a large volume filled with xylene that is coupled to four photomultiplier tubes. Analysis of the signal from these detectors requires detailed knowledge of the scintillator’s light output, which is needed to fit the nTOF spectrum, from which the neutron energy spectrum is informed. The light output is nonlinearly proportional to the neutron energy, which, in turn, affects the interpretation of the neutron energy spectrum from a TOF signal. A recent campaign on OMEGA was performed to calibrate the xylene detectors and infer the shape of the light-output curve. The campaign utilized materials with increasing Z placed in the OMEGA target chamber to initiate scattering events with the 14 MeV fusion neutrons. This process leads to the production of backscatter neutrons of varying energies that appear as peaks in the nTOF data. Simulations using a neutron transport code were combined with the measured deuterium–tritium neutron yields to calculate the expected backscattered neutron yields from the well-known scattering cross sections of each material. Furthermore, the neutron-energy dependent light output of the scintillator inferred from the experiment is compared to the light-output curve simulated with a neutron transport code for the following neutron energies: 1.5, 2.5, 6, and 14 MeV.

A Forward Analytic Model of Neutron Time-of-Flight Signals for Inferring Ion Temperatures from MagLIF Experiments

A forward analytic model is required to rapidly simulate the neutron time-of-flight (nToF) signals that result from magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) experiments at Sandia’s Z Pulsed Power Facility. Various experimental parameters, such as the burn-weighted fuel-ion temperature and liner areal density, determine the shape of the nToF signal and are important for characterizing any given MagLIF experiment. Extracting these parameters from measured nToF signals requires an appropriate analytic model that includes the primary deuterium-deuterium neutron peak, once-scattered neutrons in the beryllium liner of the MagLIF target, and direct beamline attenuation. Here, mathematical expressions for this model were derived from the general-geometry time- and energy-dependent neutron transport equation with anisotropic scattering. Assumptions consistent with the time-of-flight technique were used to simplify this linear Boltzmann transport equation into a more tractable form. Models of the uncollided and once-collided neutron scalar fluxes were developed for one of the five nToF detector locations at the Z-Machine. Numerical results from these models were produced for a representative MagLIF problem and found to be in good agreement with similar neutron transport simulations. Twenty experimental MagLIF data sets were analyzed using the forward models, which were determined to only be significantly sensitive to the ion temperature. The results of this work were also found to agree with values obtained separately using a zero scatter analytic model and a high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, inherent difficulties in this and similar techniques are identified, and a new approach forward is suggested.

Deciphering the R Ψ m correlator in search for the chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is extensively studied in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). An azimuthal correlator called R Ψ m was proposed to measure the CME. By observing the same R Ψ 2 and R Ψ 3 (convex) distributions from A Multi-Phase Transport (ampt) model, by contrasting data and model as well as large and small systems and by event shape engineering (ESE), a recent preprint (arXiv:2006.04251v1) from STAR suggests that the R Ψ m observable is sensitive to the CME signal and relatively insensitive to backgrounds, and their Au + Au data are inconsistent with known background contributions. Our ampt results contradict those from a recent preprint by STAR. Our toy model simulations demonstrate that R Ψ 2 is sensitive to both the CME signal and physics backgrounds. Toy model simulations of isobar collisions show similar centrality dependence and magnitudes for the relative R Ψ 2 strengths as well as the relative Δ γ strengths. We conclude that R Ψ 2 and the inclusive Δ γ are essentially the same.

Future Industrial Demand: Large, Elastic, and Concentrated [Guest Editorial]

Here, the future industrial demand on the grid is expected to be large, price sensitive, and concentrated. Grid industrial demand increasingly encompasses a new customer type defined as a large flexible load (LFL). This LFL type defines customers with consumption that responds quickly to price or other incentives without interrupting their core business process, such cryptocurrency mining. This customer type can often ramp up and down quickly, which across an entire industry can mean gigawatts of power within a few minutes. In addition to these price-sensitive loads, significant growth is also anticipated in sectors like manufacturing, data centers, and electrification of transportation and buildings.

ExaCA grain structure predictions for laser powder bed fusion processing

This dataset contains simulated cross-sections of laser powder bed fusion grain structures produced using the microstructure model ExaCA, in turn using time-temperature history data produced using the heat transport model AdditiveFOAM. These predictions show the grain structure using various permutations of hatch spacing and nucleation density. Also contained in the dataset are the input files necessary to reproduce the results. AdditiveFOAM (https://github.com/ORNL/AdditiveFOAM) and ExaCA (https://github.com/LLNL/ExaCA), both open source software, are required to reproduce the results in this dataset using the given input files. 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey

# 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey The 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey was designed to improve understanding of the transportation preferences of residents and visitors of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. For residents of Kauai, the survey focused on mode-choice decisions for commute, leisure, and shopping activities and whether they would consider using alternative modes instead of driving if such options were available. For visitors, the survey focused on whether they would consider alternatives to rental cars if such options were available. Ultimately, survey results will inform the development of sustainable transportation strategies for the island. ## Data Collection Agency NREL and the Kauai Office of Economic Development conducted the study as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project. ## Survey Methodology The survey was conducted July—October 2022. Respondents were recruited via direct email invitation, a press release on the Kauai County website and Facebook page, and posters at community outreach events. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 1,437 participants.

Analysis of SCALE Criticality and Sensitivity Calculations for Reflected HEU Cylinders [Slides]

The SCALE code package offers multiple nuclear data libraries supporting Monte Carlo transport, with sensitivity and uncertainty methods derived from MC transport solutions. Several libraries are multigroup, which introduce bias differing by system. Previous work has shown poor S/U results in several reflector materials: ICSBEP benchmark HMF-084 was selected to analyze biases and S/U method applicability to a variety of reflectors. Prior and ongoing work found inaccuracies in CSAS and TSUNAMI results, which were further investigated utilizing the HEU-MET-FAST-084 ICSBEP critical benchmark, chosen for its geometrical simplicity and variety of reflector materials. Perturbation of reflector thickness across various reflector materials allowed for an assortment of materials is to be tested swiftly for each sequence and method. Observation was an increasing bias of MG $k_{eff}$ relative to CE, in both direction and magnitude. IFP produced extremely reliable results. >85% of CLUTCH cases were found satisfactory.
