Continued Validation Studies using the MOOSE Framework for Plasma Simulation with Electromagnetics

Resources and tools for the modeling and simulation of low-temperature plasma (LTP) discharges are increasingly vital to progress in the field in order to properly characterize and study complex source designs and plasma chemistries beyond the scope of traditional diagnostics. Open-source software provides powerful platforms for this work and can enable community-driven LTP R&D. Within the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) open-source framework [1], capabilities have been demonstrated in the areas of plasma fluids (Zapdos [2]), plasma chemistry (CRANE [3]), and general electromagnetic wave theory (Electromagnetic Library for Kinetics & fluids [ELK] [4]). ELK has since been coupled to Zapdos/CRANE to enable fully coupled electromagnetic plasma simulations. This talk will detail the continued validation efforts and discuss Zapdos-ELK-CRANE code coupling with various-low temperature plasma sources. The impact of fully coupled electromagnetics on process parameters (e.g., temperature and electron/ion energy) versus an electrostatic description will also be discussed. Digital Q-Meter for continuous-wave NMR

A method to perform continuous-wave NMR measurements of nuclear magnetization at high magnetic fields, above 2.5 T, without analog down-mixing is described. An FPGA controls a digital clock pulse which is used to stimulate a resonant circuit and provide a reference signal. An algorithm determines the real portion of a resonant circuit signal near the Larmor frequency of the species of interest using only two measurements of the waveform per cycle. The FPGA automatically alters a variable capacitance to tune the resonant circuit to the Larmor frequency.

Quantum computing based hybrid solution strategies for large-scale discrete-continuous optimization problems

Technologies for a quantum/classical hybrid approach to solving optimization problems is disclosed. In the illustrative embodiment, an optimization problem is decomposed into two sub-problems. The first sub-problem is solved on a classical computer, and a result from the first sub-problem is provided to a quantum computer. The quantum computer then solves the second sub-problem based on the result of the first sub-problem from the classical computer. The quantum computer can then provide a result to the classical computer to re-solve the first problem. The iterative calculation is continued until an end condition is met.

Cigeo Design Options, Risks and Opportunities Management: A Continuous Project Management Goal - 20015

Andra is currently completing the detailed engineering phase of the stepwise design development of Cigeo, the French HLW and IL-LLW Deep Geological Repository. If licensed in the coming years, Cigeo's progressive construction, industrial operation and closure will last over more than a century. Such a duration, associated with the requirements in terms of reversibility, lead to the choice of an incremental design that allows, for next operator generations, to integrate improvements derived from scientific and technical progress as well as from experience feedback from its operation. This incremental design approach, associated with a permanent risks and opportunities management process, will continue after licensing of Cigeo as a tool for the governance of the reversibility. Chromate Removal by Long Life IX Resins Without Continuous pH Adjustment - 20083

Long life resins are available for chromate removal from water but have traditionally had the disadvantage of requiring pH adjustment, first to reduce pH before treatment, and then to raise pH following treatment. The requirement for double pH adjustment leads to a significant increase in TDS, added complexity, risks associated with the use of strong acids and bases, and the ongoing costs of purchasing and using these chemicals. The mechanism of removal in long life resins used for chromate removal is ion exchange, followed by reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium, followed by immobilization of trivalent chromium within the IX resin polymer. The second step is rate limiting and pH dependent and is the reason why lowering pH before treatment has until now been necessary. However, there is a reasonably simple way to use these long life resins that does not require continuous pH adjustment. By taking a portion of the treatment vessels off line and soaking them in a low pH solution, the rate constant for the reduction step is increased sufficiently to catch up, making the ion exchange step the limiting factor. The long life resin is effectively regenerated by the low pH soaks. Rejuvenated resin beds can then be put back on line and operated at the natural pH of the feedwater. This method of operation is protected by US Patent no. US20150136706A1. (author)

Uncertainty-aware Continuous Implicit Neural Representations for Remote Sensing Object Counting

Many existing object counting methods rely on density map estimation (DME) of the discrete grid representation by decoding extracted image semantic features from designed convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Relying on discrete density maps not only leads to information loss dependent on the original image resolution, but also has a scalability issue when analyzing high-resolution images with cubically increasing memory complexity. Furthermore, none of the existing methods can offer reliable uncertainty quantification (UQ) for the derived count estimates. To overcome these limitations, we design UNcertainty-aware, hypernetwork-based Implicit neural representations for Counting (UNIC) to assign probabilities and the corresponding counting confidence over continuous spatial coordinates. We derive a sampling-based Bayesian counting loss function and develop the corresponding model training algorithm. UNIC outperforms existing methods on the Remote Sensing Object Counting (RSOC) dataset with reliable UQ and improved interpretability of the derived count estimates. Our code is available at https://github.com/SiyuanXu-tamu/UNIC.

Passive continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme using a thermal source

A passive continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme, where Alice splits the output of a thermal source into two beams, measures one locally and transmits the other mode to Bob after applying attenuation. A secure key can be established based on measurements of the two beams without the use of a random number generator or an optical modulator.

Automatically adaptive stabilized finite elements and continuation analysis for compaction banding in geomaterials

Under compressive creep, viscoplastic solids experiencing internal mass transfer processes can accommodate singular cnoidal wave solutions as material instabilities at the stationary wave limit. These instabilities appear when the loading rate is significantly faster than the material's capacity to diffusive internal perturbations, leading to localized failure features (e.g., cracks and compaction bands). These cnoidal waves, generally found in fluids, have strong nonlinearities that produce periodic patterns. Due to the singular nature of the solutions, the applicability of the theory is currently limited. Additionally, practical simulation tools require proper regularization to overcome the challenges that singularity induces. We focus on the numerical treatment of the governing equation using a nonlinear approach building on a recent adaptive stabilized finite element method. This automatic refinement method provides an error estimate that drives mesh adaptivity, a crucial feature for the problem at hand. We compare the performance of this adaptive strategy against analytical and standard finite element solutions. We then investigate the sensitivity of the diffusivity ratio, the parameter controlling the process, and identify multiple possible solutions with several stress peaks. We also show the evolution of the spacing between peaks for all solutions as a function of that parameter.

Efficient continuous Energy-Multigroup hybrid depletion scheme using the Shift Monte Carlo code. Part I: Energy condensation sensitivity analysis

Monte Carlo (MC) codes coupled to depletion solvers are increasingly used to provide high fidelity fuel cycle modeling capabilities. Here, these coupled depletion-MC tools produce accurate results in general but can experience nonphysical spatial oscillations when time steps are large or when a system’s dominance ratio approaches unity. Two substepping techniques have been developed previously to remedy and dampen these spatial oscillations without needing to reduce step sizes. The first approach relied on higher-order techniques to account for spectral changes within steps (extrapolation and interpolation techniques). The second approach used the first order perturbation (FOP) theory to account for the change in the one-group spatial flux distribution within steps. This paper develops a hybrid depletion methodology which, in a way, combines how the flux is handled in both substepping techniques. Specifically, the multigroup (MG) MC Shift code is used to update the flux distribution within steps rather than a one-group FOP solver. A fully reflected pincell is investigated, which is not spatially dependent in the MG representation. Thus, the analysis in this paper is an initial demonstration of hybrid depletion. An upcoming companion paper will focus on how the hybrid depletion dampens spatial oscillations. The hybrid depletion approach is verified to be consistent with previous constant extrapolation depletion (CED) methods. This paper finds that the hybrid CED exhibits some error in the eigenvalue and one group constants within macro steps. To address this discrepancy, a simple interpolation scheme (CELI) is investigated. This work found that CELI sufficiently addresses the discrepancy in spectrum for macro steps up to 100 days. Overall, this work demonstrates that the hybrid depletion method can significantly reduce the number of high fidelity MC executions in a MC-coupled depletion with an acceptable eigenvalue error.
