Development of a continuous linear model of a d-c to d-c flyback converter.

The analytical design of the feedback circuit for a d-c flyback converter requires the formulation of a model defining the static and dynamic performance of the forward loop. This paper describes the steps which were taken to develop a linear continuous model of a typical flyback circuit. Although the method uses several approximations to simplify the work, the resulting model was found to duplicate the performance of the actual circuit very closely. The model makes it possible to design the feedback circuit using well known linear feedback techniques. The method is an extension of prior work in the modeling of pulse-width controlled circuits.

The Value of Continued Followup in a Preventive Medicine Program

Continued monitoring of hypertension and cholesterol levels in NASA employees by regularly scheduled medical examinations prevents an increase in employee disability and cardiovascular mortality rates. Adequate therapeutic control for younger hypertensive employees is demonstrated by records on mortality and heart diseases over a period of 28 months. It confirmed the importance of systolic blood pressure as diagnostic tool for the inherent risk factor. The prevalence of additional coronary risk factors among employees with hypercholesterolemia is considerably less than in employees with hypertension.

Continuous exposure of animals to methylisobutylketone

Continuous exposure of dogs, monkeys, mice, and rats to MIBK for two weeks and all animals except mice for 90 days resulted in measurable adverse effects only in the case of rats. Rat kidney weights and kidney to body weight ratios were significantly elevated after exposure to 410 mg/cu m for two weeks, and kidney and liver organ weights and organ to body weight ratios were elevated after exposure to 820 mg/cu m for two weeks and to 410 mg/cu m for 90 days.

Continuous dependence of fixed points of condensing maps

Many problems in analysis are concerned with the dependence upon parameters of fixed points of maps. For contraction mappings, criteria are relatively easy to obtain and have been known for some time. In the study of solutions of functional differential equations, more general results were needed. It is the purpose of this paper to give a rather general fixed-point theorem for condensing maps depending on a parameter, to prove continuous dependence and to indicate how many of the previous results are special cases.

Teleconferencing: Cost optimization of satellite and ground systems for continuing progressional education and medical services

A set of analytical capabilities that are needed to assess the role satellite communications technology will play in public and other services was developed. It is user oriented in that it starts from descriptions of user demand and develops the ability to estimate the cost of satisfying that demand with the lowest cost communications system. To ensure that the analysis could cope with the complexities of the real users, two services were chosen as examples, continuing professional education and medical services. Telecommunications costs are effected greatly by demographic factors, involving distribution of users in urban areas and distances between towns in rural regions. For this reason the analytical tools were exercised on sample locations. San Jose, California and Denver, Colorado were used to represent an urban area and the Rocky Mountain states were used to represent a rural region. In assessing the range of satellite system costs, two example coverage areas were considered, one appropriate to cover the contiguous forty-eight states, a second appropriate to cover about one-third that area.

Continuing development of the short-pulsed ablative space propulsion system.

Major advancements have been made in solid propellant pulsed plasma propulsion technology. A LES-6 microthruster has operated for 8900 hours in orbit. Millipound thrustors have been developed and tested at performance levels of as low as 112 watts/mlb. Efficiencies of up to 50% and specific impulse values up to 5000 sec have been measured. An improved microthrustor has operated at 207 watts/mlb continuously for 1440 hours. Correlations of design and performance data exist to allow thrustors to be built to meet a particular level of performance.

Buckling of continuously supported beams.

The buckling of infinite beams continuously supported by a semi-infinite elastic continuum is investigated. The buckling loads were determined when the beam rests on a two-dimensional elastic continuum and also when the foundation extends beyond the width of the beam. The effect of the outside foundation is shown by comparing the obtained buckling loads.

Using computers to analyze continuous data.

Dynamic field measurements often involve large quantities of continuous data, which must be analyzed and interpreted to obtain meaningful information. The processing can often be accomplished by tape-recording the data in analog form, performing off-line digitalization, and using the result as an input to statistical programs on a digital computer. A time series analysis was used to obtain power spectral density (PSD) curves to identify dominant frequencies. Representative PSD plots were obtained for STOL aircraft during cruise. Vibrational energy was clearly concentrated below 0.1 Hz, and was much higher in the vertical than in the lateral direction.

A guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles

A midcourse guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles is described. A set of orbit elements, known as the equinoctial elements, are selected as the state variables. The uncertainties are modelled statistically by random vector and stochastic processes. The motion of the vehicle and the measurements are described by nonlinear stochastic differential and difference equations respectively. A minimum time nominal trajectory is defined and the equation of motion and the measurement equation are linearized about this nominal trajectory. An exponential cost criterion is constructed and a linear feedback guidance law is derived to control the thrusting direction of the engine. Using this guidance law, the vehicle will fly in a trajectory neighboring the nominal trajectory. The extended Kalman filter is used for state estimation. Finally a short mission using this system is simulated. The results indicate that this system is very efficient for short missions.

A study of the biological effect of continuous inhalation exposure of 1, 1, 1-trichloroethene (methyl chloroform) on animals

The effects of continuous exposure to 1,1,1-trichloroethane on hepatic morphology and function are evaluated and compared with those produced by methylene chloride (dichloromethane) to determine environmental concentrations of each compound that would produce a similar biological response, i.e., a comparable increase in liver triglycerides over control levels. Experimental findings on mice, rats, dogs, and monkeys indicate that the pathological alternations observed with 1,1,1-trichloroethane are similar to those observed with dichloromethane except for different time courses of the effects and different degrees of recovery. A ten fold greater atmospheric concentration of 1,1,1-trichloroethane is required to produce the minimal liver changes found at 100 ppm dichloromethane.

Hepatic pathology in mice after continuous inhalation exposure to 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane

Mice exposed to either 250ppm or 1,000ppm 1,1,1-trichloroethane in air continuously for 14 weeks demonstrated significant changes in the centrilobular hepatocytes for the 1,000ppm group. Moderate liver triglyceride accumulation was evident in the 1,000ppm group and peaked at 40mg/gm of tissue after 7 weeks of exposure. Focal hepatocyte necrosis occurred in 40% of the mice exposed to 1,000ppm for 12 weeks. This necrosis was associated with an acute inflammatory infiltrate and hypertrophy of Kupffer cells. These findings indicate that the pathological alternations observed with 1,1,1-trichloroethane are similar to those observed with dichloromethane except for different time courses of the effects and different degrees of recovery. The toxic effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane are of a similar type to those produced by carbon tetrachloride but appear much less severe.

Continued investigations in the NAAL low speed wind tunnel into the effects of the air breathing propulsion system on orbiter subsonic stability and control characteristics (OA62A)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted on a stingmounted 0.0405-scale representation (model 43-0) of the 140A/B Space Shuttle Orbiter in a Low Speed Wind Tunnel. The NASA designation for this test was 0A62A. The primary test objective was to continue studies, initiated on tests 0A16 and 0A71A and 0A71C, in optimizing the air breathing propulsion system (ABPS) and investigating the aerodynamic effects of various nacelle number/location configurations on the orbiter stability and control characteristics. Orbiter stability and control characteristics, both with and without ABPS, were investigated at elevon deflections of 0, + or -5, + or -19, + or -5, and -20 deg; aileron deflections of 0 and 10 deg (about 0 deg elevon); and rudder deflections of 0, -7.5, and -15 deg. Aerodynamic force and moment data was measured in the body axis system by a 2.5-inch task type internal balance. The model was sting supported through the base region with a nominal angle of attack range of -4 to 30 deg. Yaw polars were recorded over the beta range of -10 to 10 deg at fixed angles of attack of 0, 5, 10, and 15 deg.

Development of a method for fabricating metallic matrix composite shapes by a continuous mechanical process

Attempts made to develop processes capable of producing metal composites in structural shapes and sizes suitable for space applications are described. The processes must be continuous and promise to lower fabrication costs. Special attention was given to the aluminum boride (Al/b) composite system. Results show that despite adequate temperature control, the consolidation characteristics did not improve as expected. Inadequate binder removal was identified as the cause responsible. An Al/c (aluminum-graphite) composite was also examined.
