A multidegree-of-freedom vibrational apparatus

Apparatus uses prestressed cables to support vibrational table. Cables are durable, do not require frequent servicing, and provide increased safety. Because much weight rests on these cables, vibration actuating pistons can provide longer service. In event of structural failure of other supporting components, they will support entire weight of vibrational table.

A solid state converter for measurement of aircraft noise and sonic boom

The problems inherent in present systems of instrumentation for measuring aircraft noise and sonic boom include limited frequency response, expensive connecting cables, sensitivity to cable length and type, high sensitivity to environmental conditions, and additional limitations of individual system components. Furthermore, differing requirements have resulted in the use of two different systems for aircraft noise and sonic boom measurements respectively. To alleviate these difficulties a unified system of instrumentation suitable for both types of measurements was developed. The system features a new solid state converter connected to a zero drive amplifier. The system was found insensitive to cable length and type up to at least 1000 ft and requires no impedance matching networks. The converter itself has flat frequency response from dc to 28 kHz (- 3 db), dynamic range of 72 db, and noise floor of 50 db in the band 22.4 Hz to 22.4 kHz.

Thermal characteristics under load

A theoretical study was made of the temperature profile in a flat conductor cable. The conductor temperature rise was determined under full load and partial load conditions in an air environment as a function of the current. Similar results were obtained for the fully loaded single cable in vacuum and also for the case of one side of the cable in contact with a heat sink. The results are in good agreement with experimental values, where available.

FCC in Viking articulated boom

The application requirements and manufacturing techniques for the flat conductor cable used in the Viking Lander Articulated Boom Unit are described. The Viking Boom is a 3-axis device utilized to position a soil sampler and provide digging forces. This application imposed severe restrictions on size, weight, materials, and choice of manufacturing processes. The final cable assembly design resulted in a combination of collated cable and flexible circuits assembled by resistance welding techniques.

Solar array deployment from a spinning spacecraft

Cylindrical drum, wrapped with flexible solar array of solar cells mounted on Mylar sheet, is held by two end-fittings with cable (under tension) passing through axel of drum. Drum is held to end-fittings by axial cable through drum axel; drum is released for deployment when cable is cut at each end and end-fittings spring outward.

Aerodynamic coefficient estimation for dynamic wind tunnel models

Maximum likelihood parameter identification is used to estimate the aerodynamic coefficients of a 'flying' aircraft model which is mounted in a transonic wind tunnel by a system of cables and pulleys. The model's motion is governed by both cable and aerodynamic forces, where the parameters to be identified are functions of the aerodynamic forces but cable forces greatly predominate. The test data were successfully processed assuming a linear equation model in the identification procedure. In one instance, the procedure was able to detect a failing measurement instrument. The final parameter estimates are compared to estimates obtained in independent tests of a similar aircraft model.

High-temperature microphone system

Pressure fluctuations in air or other gases in an area of elevated temperature are measured using a condenser microphone located in the area of elevated temperature and electronics for processing changes in the microphone capacitance located outside the area the area and connected to the microphone by means of high-temperature cable assembly. The microphone includes apparatus for decreasing the undesirable change in microphone sensitivity at high temperatures. The high temperature cable assembly operates as a half-wavelength transmission line in an AM carrier system and maintains a large temperature gradient between the two ends of the cable assembly. The processing electronics utilizes a voltage controlled oscillator for automatic tuning thereby increasing the sensitivity of the measuring apparatus.

Gentle arrester for moving bodies

Wire cable absorbs energy at constant rate with reduced shock and rebounding. Cable typically elongates to 90 percent of its potential, but is surrounded by braided sheath to absorb remaining energy should it break prematurely. Applications of arrester include passenger restraint in air and land vehicles, parachute risers, and ground snatch by aircraft. Possible cable material is type 302 stainless steel.

High-speed data link for moderate distances and noisy environments

A full duplex, high speed data link is described which comprises identical modules at each site for communication over coaxial cables. Each module having a digital frequency modulation (DFM) transmitter with an first-in-first-out (FIFO) data buffer for data from a digital system to be transmitted over a cable and a receiver with an FIFO data buffer for data received for a digital system at the other end of the cable. Data words are preceded by a sync word which enables the receiver. Every word transmitted, including the sync word is stored in the FIFO data buffer. This arrangement using FIFO buffers allows for asynchronous transmission of data with receipt of the data beginning with the very first bit of the sync word.

Centrifugal regulator for control of deployment rates of deployable elements

The requirements, design, and performance of a centrifugal regulator aimed at limiting deployment rates of deployable elements are discussed. The overall mechanism is comprised of four distinct functional parts in a machined housing: (1) the centrifugal brake device, which checks the payout of a deployment cable; (2) the reducing gear, which produces the spin rate necesary for the braking device; (3) the payout device, which allows the unwinding of the cable; and (4) the locking device, which prevents untimely unwinding. The centrifugal regulator is set into operation by a threshold tension of the cable which unlocks the mechanism and allows unwinding. The pulley of the windout device drives the centrifugal brake with the help of the reducing gear. The centrifugal force pushes aside weights that produce friction of the studs in a cylindrical housing. The mechanism behaved well at qualification temperature and vibrations.

Cost comparison of competing local distribution systems for communication satellite traffic

The boundaries of market areas which favor various means for distributing communications satellite traffic are considered. The distribution methods considered are: control Earth station with cable access, rooftop Earth stations, Earth station with radio access, and various combinations of these methods. The least cost system for a hypothetical region described by number of users and the average cable access mileage is discussed. The region is characterized by a function which expresses the distribution of users. The results indicate that the least cost distribution is central Earth station with cable access for medium to high density areas of a region combined with rooftop Earth stations or (for higher volumes) radio access for remote users.

A drive unit for the instrument pointing system

The requirements, capabilities, and unique design features of the instrument pointing system drive units (DU) are presented. The DU's are identical for all three gimbal axes (elevation, cross elevation, and azimuth) and provide alternating rotation of shaft versus the housing of + or - 180 deg. The design features include: two ball bearing cartridges using cemented carbide balls coated with TiC a layer; redundant brushless torque motors and resolvers; a load by-pass mechanism driven by a dc torque motor to off-load the bearings during ascent/descent, ground transportation, and to provide an emergency breaking capability; and cabling over each gimbal axis by means of cable follow-up consisting of 13 signal and 15 power flat band cable loops. Test results of disturbance torque characteristics are presented.

Foldable beam

A foldable beam possessing superior qualities of light weight, compactness for transportation, quick deployment with minimum use of force, and high strength is described. These qualities are achieved through the use of a series of longitudinally rigid segments, hinged along one side and threaded by one or two cables along the opposite side. Tightening the cables holds the beam extended. Loosening the cables permits the segments to fold away from the threaded side. In one embodiment the segments are connected by canted hinges with the result that the beam may be folded in a helix-like configuration around a cylinder. In another embodiment the segments themselves may be hinged to fold flat laterally as the beam is folded, resulting in a configuration that may be helixed around a shorter cylinder.

Cryogenic Pressure Seal for Wires

High-pressure-seal formed by forcing polyurethane into space surrounding wire or cable in special fitting. Wire or cable routed through fitting then through a tightly fitting cap. Wire insulation left intact. Cap filled with sealant and forced onto the fitting: this pushes sealant into fitting so it seals wire or cable in fitting as well as in cap.

Fundamental studies of heat load and thermal-structure analysis of large space structures

Investigation of the basic requirements for modeling slender member shadowing effects on thermally induced deformation continues. The theoretical formulation is complete and computer programming is underway. The basic requirements for thermal finite elements to model heat transfer in orbiting structures were also studied. The need for planar isothermal elements to model large space structures' antenna meshes was established. Finite Element approaches for modeling space structure cable and membrane components with thermal effects is underway. Three levels of structural modeling and analysis were identified: (1) a linear-elastic small deflection analysis that does not permit cable slackening; (2) a linear-elastic analysis that includes stress stiffening (the ANSYS program), but not large deflections; and (3) full nonlinear large deflection analysis with stress stiffening. Methods of determining cable initial tensions are currently being evaluated.
