Impact of the Lattice on Magnetic Properties and Possible Spin Nematicity in the S = 1 Triangular Antiferromagnet NiGa 2 S 4

NiGa 2 S 4 is a triangular lattice S = 1 system with strong two dimensionality of the lattice, actively discussed as a candidate to host spin-nematic order brought about by strong quadrupole coupling. Using Raman scattering spectroscopy we identify a phonon of E g symmetry which can modulate magnetic exchange J 1 and produce quadrupole coupling. Additionally, our Raman scattering results demonstrate a loss of local inversion symmetry on cooling, which we associate with sulfur vacancies. This will lead to disordered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which can prevent long-range magnetic order. Using magnetic Raman scattering response we identify 160 K as a temperature of an upturn of magnetic correlations. Here, the temperature range below 160 K, but above 50 K where antiferromagnetic correlations start to increase, is a candidate for spin-nematic regime.

Observation of Magnon Polarons in a Uniaxial Antiferromagnetic Insulator

Magnon polarons, a type of hybridized excitations between magnons and phonons, were first reported in yttrium iron garnet as anomalies in the spin Seebeck effect responses. Here, we report an observation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnon polarons in a uniaxial AFM insulator Cr 2 O 3 . Despite the relatively higher energy of magnon than that of the acoustic phonons, near the spin-flop transition of ~ 6 T , the left-handed magnon spectrum shifts downward to hybridize with the acoustic phonons to form AFM magnon polarons, which can also be probed by the spin Seebeck effect. The spin Seebeck signal is founded to be enhanced due to the magnon polarons at low temperatures.

Total Angular Momentum Dichroism of the Terahertz Vortex Beams at the Antiferromagnetic Resonances

Here, terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum $\textit{l}$ = ± 1, ±2, ±3, and ±4 and spin angular momentum σ = ±1 were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 and Ni 3 TeO 6 single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to σ. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum of the vortex beam: $\textit{j}$ = σ + $\textit{l}$. In particular, for $\textit{l}$ = ±2, ±3, and ±4 the sign of $\textit{l}$ is shown to dominate over that for conventional circular polarization σ.

Quantum Criticality of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity with Relativity

We study a quantum phase transition from a massless to massive Dirac fermion phase in a new two-dimensional bipartite lattice model of electrons that is amenable to sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Importantly, interactions in our model are not only invariant under SU(2) symmetries of spin and charge like the Hubbard model, but they also preserve an Ising-like electron spin-charge flip symmetry. From unbiased fermion bag Monte Carlo simulations with up to 2304 sites, we show that the massive fermion phase spontaneously breaks this Ising symmetry, picking either antiferromagnetism or superconductivity, and that the transition at which both orders are simultaneously quantum critical belongs to a new “chiral spin-charge symmetric” universality class. We explain our observations using effective potential and renormalization group calculations within the framework of a continuum field theory.

Freezing of the Lattice in the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Zn-Barlowite ZnCu 3 (OD) 6 FBr

Here, we use 79 Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) to demonstrate that ultraslow lattice dynamics set in below the temperature scale set by the Cu-Cu superexchange interaction J (≃160 K) in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite. The lattice completely freezes below 50 K, and 79 Br NQR line shapes become twice broader due to increased lattice distortions. Moreover, the frozen lattice exhibits an oscillatory component in the transverse spin echo decay, a typical signature of pairing of nuclear spins by indirect nuclear spin-spin interaction. This indicates that some Br sites form structural dimers via a pair of kagome Cu sites prior to the gradual emergence of spin singlets below ~30 K. Our findings underscore the significant roles played by subtle structural distortions in determining the nature of the disordered magnetic ground state of the kagome lattice.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Intrinsic Anomalous Hall Effect in the Topological Antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn

Here, we investigate ultrafast dynamics of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the topological antiferromagnet Mn 3 ⁢Sn with sub-100 fs time resolution. Optical pulse excitations largely elevate the electron temperature up to 700 K, and terahertz probe pulses clearly resolve ultrafast suppression of the AHE before demagnetization. The result is well reproduced by microscopic calculation of the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism while the extrinsic contribution is clearly excluded. Our work opens a new avenue for the study of nonequilibrium AHE to identify the microscopic origin by drastic control of the electron temperature by light.

Quantum Spin Dynamics Due to Strong Kitaev Interactions in the Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsCeSe 2

The extraordinary properties of the Kitaev model have motivated an intense search for new physics in materials that combine geometrical and bond frustration. In this Letter, we employ inelastic neutron scattering, spin wave theory, and exact diagonalization to study the spin dynamics in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) CsCeSe 2 . This material orders into a stripe phase, which is demonstrated to arise as a consequence of the off-diagonal bond-dependent terms in the spin Hamiltonian. By studying the spin dynamics at intermediate fields, we identify an interaction between the single-magnon state and the two-magnon continuum that causes decay of coherent magnon excitations, level repulsion, and transfer of spectral weight to the continuum that are controlled by the strength of the magnetic field. Our results provide a microscopic mechanism for the stabilization of the stripe phase in TLAF and show how complex many-body physics can be present in the spin dynamics in a magnet with strong Kitaev coupling even in an ordered ground state. Quasi-Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Candidate CeRh 2 As 2

The tetragonal heavy-fermion superconductor CeRh 2 ⁢As 2 (T c = 0.3 K) exhibits an exceptionally high critical field of 14 T for B ∥ c. It undergoes a field-driven first-order phase transition between superconducting states, potentially transitioning from spin-singlet to spin-triplet superconductivity. To further understand these superconducting states and the role of magnetism, we probe spin fluctuations in CeRh 2 ⁢As 2 using neutron scattering. Here, we find dynamic (π, π) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations with an anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional correlation volume. Our data place an upper limit of 0.31 μ B on the staggered magnetization of corresponding Néel orders at T = 0.08 K. Density functional theory calculations, treating Ce 4⁢ƒ electrons as core states, show that the AFM wave vector connects significant areas of the Fermi surface. Our findings indicate that the dominant excitations in CeRh 2 ⁢As 2 for ℏω⁢ < 1.2 meV are magnetic and suggest that superconductivity in CeRh 2⁢ As 2 is mediated by AFM spin fluctuations associated with a proximate quantum critical point.

Native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, in this study we visualized the native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 . Two native defects, Mn Bi and Bi Te antisites, can be well resolved in the topographic images. Mn Bi tend to suppress the density of states at the conduction band edge. Spectroscopy imaging reveals a localized peaklike local density of state at ~ 80 meV below the Fermi energy. A careful inspection of topographic and spectroscopic images, combined with density functional theory calculation, suggests this results from Bi Mn antisites at Mn sites. The random distribution of Mn Bi and Bi Mn antisites results in spatial fluctuation of local density of states near the Fermi level in MnBi 2 Te 4 .

Highly sensitive spin-flop transition in antiferromagnetic van der Waals material M PS 3 ( M = Ni and Mn)

Recent developments in two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have motivated the search for van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials to explore magnetic phenomena in the 2D limit. Metal thiophosphates, MPX 3 , are a class of magnetic vdW materials with antiferromagnetic ordering persisting down to the atomically thin limit. The magnetism in this material family has been found to be highly dependent on the choice of transition metal M. In this paper, we have synthesized the intermediate compounds Ni 1–x Mn x PS 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and investigated their magnetic properties. Our study reveals that the variation of Ni and Mn content in Ni 1–x Mn x PS 3 can efficiently tune the spin-flop transition, likely due to the modulation of the magnetic anisotropy. Such effective tuning offers a promising candidate to engineer 2D magnetism for future device applications.

Imaging the spin chirality of ferrimagnetic Néel skyrmions stabilized on topological antiferromagnetic Mn 3 Sn

Néel skyrmions are generally realized in asymmetric multilayers made of heavy metals (HMs) and ultrathin ferromagnets possessing strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (iDMIs). Depending on the relative strengths of iDMIs at the interfaces, various types of Néel skyrmions have been suggested, which are typified with characteristically different topological properties and current-driven dynamics. This suggests the importance of a precise quantification of their spin chiralities. In this paper, we explore the possibility of realizing Néel skyrmions in magnetic multilayers without the direct usage of standard HMs. Specifically, through depositing a thin layer of ferrimagnetic (FIM) CoTb layer on top of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum material of composition Mn 3 Sn, the AFM exchange interaction at the asymmetric interface provides an equivalent iDMI for stabilizing FIM Néel skyrmions. Secondly, through using advanced four-dimensional Lorentz scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D LSTEM), in combination with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM), we can directly determine the spin chirality of FIM Néel skyrmions. Finally, the present findings not only broaden the phase space for chiral interfacial magnetism but also provide a possibility for future applications of heavy-metal-free skyrmionic devices.

Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Antiferromagnetic order in Co-doped Fe 5 GeTe 2 probed by resonant magnetic x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet Fe 5-δ GeTe 2 has emerged as a promising platform for electronic and spintronic functionalities at room temperature, owing to its large ferromagnetic ordering temperature T C ≈ 315 K. Interestingly, by cobalt (Co) substitution of iron in F5GT, i.e., (Fe 1-x Co x ) 5-δ GeTe 2 (Co-F5GT), not only can its magnetic transition temperature be further enhanced, but the magnetic and structural ground states can also be tuned. Specifically, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is induced beyond the Co doping level x ≥ 0.4. Here, in this work, we investigate the magnetic properties of a Co-F5GT single crystal at x = 0.45(1), by utilizing the element-specific, resonant magnetic x-ray scattering technique. Our study reveals an A-type, Ising-like AFM ground state, with a transition temperature T N ≈ 340 K. In addition, our work unveils an important contribution from Co magnetic moments to the magnetic order. The application of the in-plane magnetic fields gradually polarizes the spin moments along the field direction, but without inducing incommensurate spin texture(s).

Coexistence of commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground states in Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 single crystal

In Co 𝑥 ⁢NbSe 2 , crystal symmetry and cobalt site occupation drive the formation of two distinct magnetic phases. At 𝑥=1/4, the centrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑚⁢𝑐) promotes Co-Co interactions leading to the formation of an 𝐴-type antiferromagnetic structure phase with a transition temperature of 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$=169K. At 𝑥=1/3, the noncentrosymmetric structure (𝑃⁢6 3 ⁢22) induces a lower-temperature magnetic phase with 𝑇$^S_𝑁$=28K. We report the coexistence of both substructures within a superlattice, with a nuclear propagation vector of (1/3, 1/3, 0) relative to the host lattice. Single crystals of Co 0.28 ⁢NbSe 2 exhibit both magnetic transitions, with 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/4 phase and 𝑇$^S_𝑁$ corresponding to the 𝑥∼1/3 phase. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements confirm these transitions, although only the high-temperature 𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$ phase significantly affects resistivity. We successfully isolate each phase in powder samples, while single crystals with an intercalation ratio of 𝑥=0.28 display the coexistence of both phases in a single sample. Using single-crystal neutron diffraction, we solved the magnetic structure of the high-temperature centrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^𝐴_𝑁$), and neutron powder diffraction revealed the double-𝑞 magnetic structure of the low-temperature noncentrosymmetric phase (𝑇$^S_𝑁$).

Random singlet-like state in the dimer-based triangular antiferromagnet Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17 − δ

We present the magnetic, thermodynamic, and muon spin relaxation ( μ SR ) results of the dimer-based triangular antiferromagnet Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17 − δ . The magnetic susceptibility data show the sub-Curie-Weiss behavior χ ( T ) ∝ T − α χ below 100 K, suggesting random magnetism. The isothermal magnetization results reveal the presence of weakly interacting structural orphan spins about 6.1 % at 2 K, arising from the oxygen deficiency. The comprehensive μ SR experiments exhibit the coexisting relaxing and nonrelaxing components along with the thermally activated behavior in the muon spin relaxation rate, reflecting the fluctuating orphan spins in the dimer singlet background. In addition, we observe the scaling behavior of M ( H , T ) in H / T and P z ( t ) in t / H LF with the scaling exponents α χ = α M = 0.75 and α μ = 0.72 , respectively, but not for the magnetic specific heat data. The failure of the scaling relation in C m ( H , T ) / T implies low-energy excitations dressed by the conventional orphan spins. Based on these observations, we find that the magnetic ground state resembles random singlets and discuss the possible configurations of the spin dimer unit Rh 2 O 9 . Our results shed light on the role of quenched disorder in the dimer-based frustrated magnets. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Large-𝑁 SU(4) Schwinger boson theory for coupled-dimer antiferromagnets

Here, we develop a systematic large-𝑁 expansion based on the Schwinger boson representation of SU(4) coherent states of dimers for the paradigmatic spin-1/2 bilayer square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This system exhibits a quantum phase transition between a quantum paramagnetic state and a Néel order state, driven by the coupling constant 𝑔 = 𝐽′/𝐽, which is defined as the ratio between the interdimer 𝐽′ and intradimer 𝐽 exchange interactions. We demonstrate that this approach accurately describes static and dynamic properties on both sides of the quantum phase transition. The critical coupling constant 𝑔 𝑐 ≈ 0.42 and the dynamic spin structure factor reproduce quantum Monte Carlo results with high precision. Notably, the 1/𝑁 corrections reveal the longitudinal mode of the magnetically ordered phase along with the overdamping caused by its decay into the two-magnon continuum. The present large-𝑁 SU(4) Schwinger boson theory can be extended to more general cases of quantum paramagnets that undergo a quantum phase transition into magnetically ordered states.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of the 𝑆 = $\frac{5}{2}$ almost Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet K 2⁢ Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2

Here, we report calorimetric, magnetic, and neutron scattering studies on an 𝑆 = 5/2, nearly Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K 2 ⁢Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 with weak XXZ easy-axis anisotropy. Multiple magnetic phases are identified, including a noncollinear Y phase in zero field, a field-induced collinear 𝑚 = 1/3 magnetization plateau, and a high-field V phase. In the Y phase, the magnetic excitation spectrum exhibits both single-magnon excitations and an extended high-energy continuum. Both features are well described by nonlinear spin wave theory. In the field-induced phases, complex effects of the spectrum renormalization even for large 𝑆 = 5/2 material are clearly detectable. These results underscore the essential role of magnon-magnon interactions in the dynamics of large-𝑆 Heisenberg spin systems on a triangular lattice.

Tunable magnetic excitations in the honeycomb antiferromagnet (Co,Ni)⁢TiO3

The solid solution of the honeycomb antiferromagnet (AFM) Co0.5⁢Ni0.5⁢TiO3 (CNTO) was synthesized by mixing a 1:1 molar ratio of CoTiO3 (CTO) and NiTiO3 (NTO). Powder neutron scattering was used to determine the structure and magnetic spectrum, where the nuclear and magnetic structures resemble those of the end members. The Néel temperature (T𝑁 = 27 ± 1 K), the ordered magnetic moment (M = 2.29 ± 0.03 𝜇𝐵 per magnetic ion), and lattice parameters are intermediate between those of the two. From inelastic neutron scattering, it is observed that the magnon density of states (MDOS) extends up to 13 meV, and the interaction can be described by an XXZ-type magnetic Hamiltonian. Above 15 meV, spin-orbit excitons (SOEs) are observed similarly to those in CTO, but with modified spin-orbit crystal-field splitting because of the substitution of Ni at Co sites, and the disorder induced by the Ni substitution modifies the spin-orbit crystal field. Thus, the magnetic dynamics of the CNTO cannot be described as a simple average of the two parent compounds.
