Progress and challenges in traveling-wave (TW) SRF cavity

Traveling-wave (TW) technology can push the accelerator field gradient of niobium SRF cavity to 70MV/m or higher beyond the limit of 50~60MV/m in Standing-wave (SW) technology. The early stages of TW SRF cavity developments had been funded by several SBIR grants to Euclid Techlabs and completed in collaboration with Fermilab through a 1-cell prototype and a proof-of-principle 3-cell TW cavity. The TW resonance excitation in the 3-cell TW cavity at 2K was demonstrated through the low power RF test in early 2024. A high-power test of the 3-cell in TW mode being prepared. To advance a design and technology to fabricate a novel high gradient TW SRF cavity, FNAL proposed a half-meter TW RF design and R&Ds to realize that are in progress. Here we will report the recent progress in the 3-cell TW cavity and the challenges towards a half-meter scale TW cavity.

Tests and Field Mapping of RODM01 Septum Magnet

RODM01 is a septum magnet located in the extraction region of LANSCE Proton Storage Ring. Tests and field mapping of RODM01 Set #2 were performed on 02/04/2020 by members of AOT-MDE, AOT-RFE and AOT-AE Groups. Setups of test and mapping are presented. Magnetic field measurements was performed using Hall probe. Results of measurements are almost identical to that of RODM01 Set #1 performed in July 2018. Trim coil current of magnet selected to be as - 9.28 A.

2019 Quantum Materials Young Investigators Workshop Report

The fourth edition of the workshop “Quantum Materials Young Investigators” was held June 6-7, 2019 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This workshop followed up on previous meetings that took place at ORNL starting in 2016. This important series of annual workshops, organized by Adam Aczel and Stuart Calder, ensures continuous engagement with the early career principal investigators (PIs) of the quantum materials neutron scattering community. Through a series of short scientific talks presented by the external PIs, members of the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) learn about their scientific interests and needs. Presentations from ORNL staff members also help to inform the external PIs about the current state of ORNL’s quantum materials neutron scattering program. Topics covered include the current instrument suites, sample environment, data reduction, visualization, and analysis, and future neutron scattering and complementary capabilities. Feedback is solicited from the external PIs in all these key areas and communicated to NSD management in the form of a workshop report. This workshop series also helps to foster collaborations between NSD scientists and the research groups of the external PIs and plays an important role in attracting new neutron scattering users.

Optimization of the Booster Tuner Confguration

The PIP-II upgrade will increase the initial injection energy of beam particles in the booster ring. This will lead to a direct increase in power dissipation in the radio-frequency cavity tuners. The goal of this project is to develop a way to design more optimal tuner configurations to reduce their power consumption while maintaining all of the PIP-II era constraints.
