Design of minimax output feedback controller for system with parameter uncertainty

The problem of controlling a time-invariant system with parameter uncertainty is considered with incomplete state feedback. The controller is designed by minimaximizing a quadratic performance criterion and a sensitivity (or loss) criterion, involving the state of the system, the control, and the uncertainty vector. The resulting optimal controller is linear and optimal feedback gain matrix must satisfy a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. some algorithms for algebraic minimax problems are presented.

Minimax design of Kalman-like filters in the presence of large parameter uncertainties.

An attempt is made to guide the designer by means of a systematic procedure which will yield a filter that performs in an acceptable fashion when there is some uncertainty in the various system parameters. Very general restrictions are placed upon these uncertainties, and it is shown that they are applicable in most practical situations. The minimax approach results in a unique fixed filter design which places a least upper bound on a given sensitivity measure over the assumed range of uncertain parameters. The resulting filters are identical in form to the Kalman filter, provide nearly optimal performance over the entire range of uncertain statistics, and are independent of the actual noise statistics. Examples are given.

Modeling and parameter uncertainties for aircraft flight control system design

Values of plant dynamic uncertainties for some recent aircraft design and development programs are given. Histories of pertinent aerodynamic, inertial, and structural parameter variations are given for a period of time from program initiation to aircraft certification. These data can be used as typical of future vehicles so that control system design concepts are evaluated with due consideration to their sensitivity to uncertainties in plant dynamics.

Stabilizing feedback control for dynamical systems with bounded uncertainty

The theories of differential games and generalized dynamic systems are used to deduce stabilizing controllers for quasi-linear systems. Attention is given to a class of dynamic systems subject to parameter and input uncertainty whose values range in a given compact set. Using a worst case design philosophy, a feedback control is derived that assures uniform asymptotic (Liapunov) stability of the origin under all admissible uncertainties.

Entry dynamics of space shuttle orbiter with lateral-directional stability and control uncertainties at supersonic and hypersonic speeds

A six-degree-of-freedom simulation analysis was conducted to examine the effects of the lateral-directional static aerodynamic stability and control uncertainties on the performance of the automatic (no manual inputs) entry-guidance and control systems of the space shuttle orbiter. To establish the acceptable boundaries of the uncertainties, the static aerodynamic characteristics were varied either by applying a multiplier to the aerodynamic parameter or by adding an increment. Control-system modifications were identified that decrease the sensitivity to off-nominal aerodynamics. With these modifications, the acceptable aerodynamic boundaries were determined.

The uncertainty in ozone calculations by a stratospheric photochemistry model

At present, there is an apparent conflict between one-dimensional stratospheric photochemistry models used in predicting ozone depletion and average data for stratospheric ozone. This conflict is in three particulars - column density of O3 and ozone density in the regions around 30 km and 50 km altitude. A study of the sensitivity of one such model to the values of reaction rates, boundary conditions, solar intensities, photolysis cross sections, and O(1D) yield parameters reveals that even at the 2-sigma uncertainty limit due to these input parameters, the model does not overlap the data for O3 density at 30 km and 50 km. The data is outside the 1-sigma model uncertainty limit for O3 column density. The study also shows the relative contribution of the various parameters studied to the imprecision in these model results.

Statistical and computational uncertainties in atmospheric profiles from radio occultation - Mariner 10 at Venus

Statistical error in Mariner 10 occultation profiles is traced from initial observations to reduced temperature, pressure, and absorption profiles. It is shown that for the Mariner 10 profile with a height of resolution of 0.1 km, statistical measurement errors lead to uncertainties in temperature that are less than 2 K at all altitudes considered and are typically less than 0.5 K. Attention is also given to uncertainties in pressure and atmospheric absorption. In addition it is found that there is also a systematic error in the reduction of two-way data that arises from the parallax between the uplink and downlink ray paths. Finally, it is concluded that if the systematic error can be reduced to the level of the statistical noise in Mariner 10, then long term studies of thick atmospheres by occultation techniques will be feasible in the future at good levels of accuracy.

The Uncertainty Threshold Principle: Some Fundamental Limitations of Optimal Decision Making Under Dynamic Uncertainity

This note shows that the optimal control of dynamic systems with uncertain parameters has certain limitations. In particular, by means of a simple scalar linear-quadratic optimal control example, it is shown that the infinite horizon solution does not exist if the parameter uncertainty exceeds a certain quantifiable threshold; we call this the uncertainty threshold principle. The philosophical and design implications of this result are discussed.

Optimization and simulation of flight control laws under parameter uncertainty and external disturbances

Several tasks pertinent to flight control in parameter uncertainty and wind-gust loading were successfully completed. Identification algorithms for extracting stability and control derivatives from flight data taking gust loading into account were developed. They were verified by simulation and evaluated throughly on actual flight data taken on a Lockheed Jet Star flying in turbulence. In particular the need for automatically generated dither-like inputs was studied. Criteria for performance evaluation using stochastic models were developed for gust alleviation as well as handling quantities. Algorithms for assessing degradation in performance due to parameter uncertainty were developed and evaluated using flight test data.

Uncertainty in ring current parameters due to the quiet magnetic field variability at mid-latitudes

At midlatitudes the presence of Sq variation is a problem, as variability of Sq currents may produce magnetic perturbations comparable to the magnetic effects of the partial ring current on comparable time scales. The paper reports the results of an empirical determination of the quiet magnetic field, which includes the Sq variation and secular variation at 27 midlatitude magnetic observatories for the 1967-1968 period. The main concern is with the consequences of the quiet field uncertainty in terms of using midlatitude magnetic data to quantify the size and location of the magnetic disturbances caused by substorms and the ring current. Attention is given to investigating the error associated with the empirical model used. It is shown how the uncertainty can be reduced by examining the changes occurring in some interval of time.

Space Shuttle Orbiter flight heating rate measurement sensitivity to thermal protection system uncertainties

A study was completed to determine the sensitivity of computed convective heating rates to uncertainties in the thermal protection system thermal model. Those parameters considered were: density, thermal conductivity, and specific heat of both the reusable surface insulation and its coating; coating thickness and emittance; and temperature measurement uncertainty. The assessment used a modified version of the computer program to calculate heating rates from temperature time histories. The original version of the program solves the direct one dimensional heating problem and this modified version of The program is set up to solve the inverse problem. The modified program was used in thermocouple data reduction for shuttle flight data. Both nominal thermal models and altered thermal models were used to determine the necessity for accurate knowledge of thermal protection system's material thermal properties. For many thermal properties, the sensitivity (inaccuracies created in the calculation of convective heating rate by an altered property) was very low.

The two-dimensional diagnostic model for tropospheric OH - An uncertainty analysis

Tropospheric OH is believed to play a major role in atmospheric photochemistry, and, via its chemical interactions OH ultimately may affect the climate, stratospheric ozone levels, and the pH of rain. A valuable tool for predicting the global OH abundance as a function of latitude and altitude is the two-dimensional diagnostic model for tropospheric OH. This model can also be applied to budget studies of species which interact with OH, such as CH4, CO, and O3. In addition to laboratory-obtained kinetic data, important variables include the rate constants for several reactions, the rate of heterogeneous removal of soluble species, and the global abundance and spatial variability in H2O, O3, CO, and NOx. The uncertainties in these parameters imply over a factor of 3 variability in the calculated global OH concentration as well as significant uncertainties in the latitudinal and vertical OH distribution.

Inherent uncertainties in meteorological parameters for wind turbine design

Major difficulties associated with meteorological measurments such as the inability to duplicate the experimental conditions from one day to the next are discussed. This lack of consistency is compounded by the stochastic nature of many of the meteorological variables of interest. Moreover, simple relationships derived in one location may be significantly altered by topographical or synoptic differences encountered at another. The effect of such factors is a degree of inherent uncertainty if an attempt is made to describe the atmosphere in terms of universal laws. Some of these uncertainties and their causes are examined, examples are presented and some implications for wind turbine design are suggested.

On the statistical uncertainties associated with line profile fitting

The paper considers the statistical uncertainties in the best-fit parameters associated with the fitting of observational data by model line profiles of specific form. The parameters involved are amplitude, center, and width. A general procedure is described for any profile type of parametric form. The case of Gaussian profiles is treated in detail, and numerical solutions are presented for equally spaced data of equal weight. Approximate analytical solutions are derived that give good general agreement with the numerical solutions over the whole range of interest. Approximate solutions are also obtained for the case of Lorentzian profiles. It is shown that the Lorentzian results can be used in conjunction with the Gaussian results to estimate the corresponding parameter uncertainties in the case of the general Voigt profile.

For the case of a system with j adjustable and k nonadjustable parameters, this methodology (which includes an adaptive random search strategy) is used to determine the combination of j adjustable parameter values which maximize the probability of those performance indices which simultaneously satisfy design criteria in spite of the uncertainty due to k nonadjustable parameters.

Application of in-flight thrust determination uncertainty

A numerical example is given of a previously proposed methodology for the evaluation of in-flight thrust measurement uncertainty, using data extracted from a performance report comparing two different missile prototypes under a variety of flight conditions. Attention is given to the data for the AGM-68B Air Launched Cruise Missile, which is powered by the F107 dual-spool, mixed flow turbofan engine. Assessments are made of the definition of the measurement process, instrumentation error estimation, the propagation of errors to thrust calculation, mathematical model errors, the in-flight thrust error component, and correction to standard conditions. It is concluded that in-flight thrust measurement uncertainty limits can be evaluated from measurement system error analysis results and test data for the missile evaluation process presently described.
