Effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium and its alloys

Occluded hydrogen resulting from cathodic charging of commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys, Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V, was shown to cause embrittlement of the alloys. Embrittlement was a function of the interstitial hydrogen content rather than the amount of precipitated titanium hydride. The effects of hydrogen concentration on the critical strain for plastic instability along pure shear directions was determined for alloys Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn. Hydrogen, in concentrations below that necessary for spontaneous hydride precipitation, increased the strain necessary for instability formation or instability failure. The strain rate sensitivity also increased with increasing hydrogen concentration. The effect of hydrogen on slip and twinning was determined for titanium single crystals. The critical resolved shear stress for prism slip was increased and the critical resolved shear stress for twinning was decreased with increasing hydrogen concentration.

The surface structure of titanium and its interaction with bromine and chlorine

The surface structure and composition of titanium have been studied by electron diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy in the temperature range 25 to 850 C. Atomically clean, well-defined Ti surfaces were obtained by a combination of argon ion sputtering and thermal treatment at 700 to 800 C. A series of surface superstructures was observed as the crystal temperature was gradually decreased. The development of the superstructures is best explained as due to surface reconstruction as a result of surface relaxation. The interaction of bromine and chlorine vapors with clean Ti surfaces was investigated in the temperature range 25 to 500 C. Bromine exposure at room temperature gave rise to an amorphous surface layer, which on annealing transformed into an epitaxial TiBr2 structure. Chlorine interaction resulted in the formation of an epitaxial TiCl3 on both cold and hot Ti surfaces. Surface impurities inhibited the chemical interaction process on the Ti surface.

High temperature composite bonding with PPQ

A polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) was evaluated as a high temperature adhesive for joining polyimide graphite laminates (PI/Gr) to PI/Gr, PI/Gr to titanium (Ti), and Ti to Ti. The effect of polymer molecular weight, processing parameters, 3-day water boil, and 316 C (600 F) aging in air upon lap shear strengths is presented. Titanium to Ti climbing drum peel and PI/Gr to polyimide glass honeycomb flatwise tensile strengths are also presented.

Effects of thermal metamorphism on compositions of lunar spinels

The reported study represents an attempt to evaluate experimentally the compositional and textural changes that are likely to be observed in the Fe-Ti-Cr spinels of lunar igneous rocks by subsequent thermal metamorphism. The Apollo 12 igneous rock, 12018,43, was chosen for this investigation because an earlier study of another fraction of this rock by El Goresy et al. (1971) has reported an almost continuous trend of spinel compositions between Cr-Ulvoespinel and Ti-chromite. The nature of the compositional changes in the heated spinels (and ilmenites) is found to be such that the changes cannot be explained by intragranular adjustments alone. In the heated sample, pyroxene grains adjacent to the high-Ti spinels show a decrease in FeO, and an increase in MgO and Al2O3 at the interface. This may account for the MgO depletion and a part of the FeO enrichment in the high-Ti spinels. It is believed that the heating experiment demonstrates that thermal metamorphism of lunar basalts is likely to modify the compositions of their preexisting spinels (and ilmenites).

The Allende meteorite - Evidence for a new cosmothermometer based on the Ti/3+/ to Ti/4+/ ratio

The mineral thermodynamic condensation sequence is applied to assemblages in Ca-Al-Ti-rich inclusions in the Allende meteorite, and it is suggested that the total amount of titanium and Ti(3+) contents of aluminous clinopyroxenes (fassaites) are temperature sensitive and that the ratio Ti(3+)/Ti(4+) may be used as a qualitative cosmothermometer. The direct gas-to-solid condensation hypothesis is favored because the predicted thermodynamic sequence is followed. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the condensation interval of Ti(3+) stabilization is 1647-1125 K, while the titanian-fassaites probably condensed in the interval 1625-1349 K. It is suggested that the Allende meteorite has sampled a spectrum of the condensing solar nebula.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

Several techniques were used to study pretreated Ti 6-4 surfaces including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), and, reflectance visible spectroscopy. Each pretreatment type gave a characteristic surface morphology as seen by SEM. Elemental analysis of the Ti 6-4 surfaces was done using ESCA. Trace residual contaminants from particular chemical pretreatments were identified readily. Results indicate that reflectance visible spectroscopy using indicator dyes placed on Ti 6-4 surfaces appears to be a feasible approach to establish surface acidity. Differences in surface acidity were observed using bromthymol blue on Ti 6-4 surfaces pretreated by two different methods.

Control of interface reactions in SIC/TI composites

The reaction between a 0.5 to 1.0 Al film and a thick Ti substrate to form TiAl3 occurs very rapidly on heating to 635 C and causes the Al to be confined to the surface region. After heating to 900 C Ti3Al is formed with little release of Al into alpha Ti. Further annealing at 900 C eventually causes the Ti3Al phase to decompose and a substantial amount of Al is released into alpha Ti. The interdiffusion coefficient for Al in alpha Ti at 900 C increases by less than one order of magnitude as Al is varied from 0 to 20 at %. These data were obtained from the (101) X-ray diffraction intensity band using polycrystalline samples. Improvements in the analysis of X-ray diffraction data for the determination of composition profiles are discussed.

Armalcolite - An oxygen fugacity indicator

Lunar armaloclites, (Fe, Mg)Ti2O5, contain appreciable amounts of Ti(3+) (less than 1 to 17% of Ti mole fraction). This is a function of the oxygen fugacity occurring at the time of its formation, with lower fugacities being reflected in higher Ti(3+) contents. Controlled cooling-rate and isothermal experimentation on synthetic analog and natural specimens of 70017 and 74275 have been used to calibrate an oxygen geobarometer. Most lunar rocks have followed crystallization paths in oxygen fugacity/T space such that the prevailing oxygen fugacity can be represented by a curve near parallel to the I/W buffer curve. The oxygen fugacity estimates derived from Ti(3+) considerations of armalcolites range from the iron/wustite curve to about 1.5 log units below.

The effects of metals and inhibitors on thermal oxidative degradation reactions of unbranched perfluoroalkylethers

Thermal oxidative degradation studies were performed on unbranched perfluoroalkylethers at 288 C in oxygen. Metals and alloys studied included Ti, Al, and Ti (4 Al, 4 Mn). The mechanism of degradation was by chain scission. Ti and Al promoted less degradation than Ti (4 Al, 4 Mn). The two inhibitors investigated (a perfluorophenyl phosphine and a phosphatriazine) reduced degradation rates by several orders of magnitude. Both inhibitors were effective for the same duration (75 to 100 hours). The phosphatriazine appeared to provide more surface protection.

Use of thermal inertia determined by HCMM to predict nocturnal cold prone areas in Florida

Pairs of HCMM day-night thermal infrared (IR) data were selected during the 1978-79 winter to examine patterns of surface temperature and thermal inertia (TI) of peninsular Florida. The GOES and NOAA-6 thermal IR, as well as National Climatic Center temperatures and rainfall, were also used. The HCMM apparent thermal inertia (ATI) images closely corresponded to the general soil map of Florida, based on soil drainage classes. Areas with low ATI overlay well-drained soils, such as deep sands and drained organic soils, whereas with high ATI overlay areas with wetlands and bodies of water. The HCMM ATI images also corresponded well with GOES-detected winter nocturnal cold-prone areas. Use of HCMM data with Carlson's energy balance model showed both high moisture availability (MA) and high thermal inertia (TI) of wetland-type surfaces and low MA and low TI of upland, well-drained soils. Since soil areas with low TI develop higher temperatures during the day, then antecedent patterns of highest maximum daytime surface temperature can also be used to predict nocturnal cold-prone areas in Florida.

Ancient crustal components in the Fra Mauro breccias

Texturally pristine clasts preserve primary petrographic relationships and mineral compositions, yielding insights into igneous processes of the early lunar crust that cannot be gained from highly shocked and brecciated 'chemically pristine' samples. The use of texture as a prime criterion allows for expansion of the data base derived solely from chemical criteria, and provides complementary data. Texturally pristine clasts from the Apollo 14 site studied here include anorthosite, troctolites, gabbronorites, and basalts. Alkali anorthosites are plagioclase orthocumulates and may form by flotation in Mg-suite plutons. Ferroan anorthosite was cataclastically deformed and metamorphosed to granulite facies. Troctolites include both 01 + Plg and 01 + En + Plg cumulates. Major and trace element analyses of two troctolites reveal 'eastern' geochemical affinities that contrast other 'western' troctolites. Gabbronorites are Pig + Plg + or - Sp cumulates whose parent magmas may range from high-Al to intermediate-Ti mare basalt. At least three varieties of mare basalt are found at Apollo 14: high-Al, low-Ti; low-Al, intermediate-Ti; and low-Al, Ti VHK basalt. VHK (Very High Potassium) basalt is a new variety indigenous to Apollo 14.

The application of thermodynamic and spectroscopic techniques to adhesion in the polyimide/Ti 6-4 and polyphenylquinoxaline/Ti 6-4 systems

The results of calorimetric measurements of Ti adherend surfaces are presented. The measurements were carried out after several chemical pretreatments and after fracture of several lap shear samples aged at high temperature. The exact composition of the Ti samples was Ti(6 percent Al-4 percent V). The adhesives used were polyimides and polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ). Each chemical pretreatment was accompanied by a unique spectroscopic feature which was characterized by XPS, SEM, and specular reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The energetics of the interaction between primer solutions and the Ti adherend were evaluated by microcalorimetry. Changes in the structure of the surface oxide layer upon heating of the adherend were deduced from immersion temperatures of the PI and PPQ solutions. The XPS and SEM data are given is a table.

Hf, Zr, and REE partition coefficients between ilmenite and liquid - Implications for lunar petrogenesis

Partition coefficients (D) between ilmenite and coexisting liquid were determined under near-lunar conditions for Hf, Zr, and REE. Through isotope dilution analysis, ilmenite D values of 0.41 and 0.33 were obtained for Hf and Zr respectively, values significantly lower than those of ilmenite from a kimberlite megacryst. Partition coefficients of REE for the synthesized ilmenite are slightly smaller than those of ilmenite from the kimberlite megacryst, and the lunar (Lu) partition coefficient is 0.056. These results suggest that ilmenite was significant in the lunar-Hf evolution of lunar mare basalts. Using lunar and Hf D values for ilmenite, the Lu-Hf evolution of lunar cumulates and the coexisting magma was examined for various crystallization sequences. The Lu-Hf variation trend of most high-Ti mare basalts is explained by a small degree of partial cumulate melting, though a higher degree is required to explain the variation of very low-Ti basalts, green glass, and Apollo 12 low-Ti basalts. Apollo 15 low-Ti basalts may require chromite crystallization as well.

High Tc screen-printed YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films - Effect of the substrate material

Thick films of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) have been deposited on highly polished alumina, magnesia spinel, nickel aluminum titanate (Ni-Al-Ti), and barium tetratitanate (Ba-Ti) substrates by the screen printing technique. Properties of the films were found to be highly sensitive to the choice of the substrate material. The film on Ba-Ti turned green after firing, due to a reaction with the substrate and were insulating. A film on Ni-Al-Ti had a Tc (onset) of about 95 K and lost 90 percent of its resistance by about 75 K. However, even at 4 K it was not fully superconducting, possibly due to a reaction between the film and the substrate and interdiffusion of the reaction products. The film on alumina had Tc (onset) of about 96 K, Tc (zero) of about 66 K, and Delta Tc of about 10 K. The best film was obtained on spinel and had Tc (onset) of about 94 K, zero resistance at 81 K, and a transition width of about 7 K.

X-ray diffraction measurements of residual stresses in SiC/Ti composites

Residual stresses are developed in metal matrix composites during consolidation because of the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the fiber and matrix constituents. X-ray diffraction techniques were used to measure tensile residual stresses in the matrix component of two different titanium alloy composites reinforced with continuous silicon carbide fibers. The titanium alloy matrices were a beta-stabilized alloy Ti-15V-3Al-3Cr-3Sn, and an ordered multiphase (alpha + beta) alloy, Ti-14Al-21Nb. Residual tensile stresses as high as 62 percent of the yield of Ti-15V-3Al-3Cr-3Sn and 70 percent of the yield of Ti-14Al-21Nb were measured in the longitudinal direction on unidirectionally reinforced composites. By measuring residual stresses in four different composite lay-ups, the composite lay-up was determined to have a significant effect on the residual stress state near the surface.
