Performance Characterization and Energy Savings Assessment of a Radial Flux Surface Permanent Magnet Motor Technology

This project is part of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) "Commercialization Assistance Program" to provide technical expertise to help emerging companies overcome technical barriers to commercialization. In this study, NREL has evaluated the efficiency and energy saving potential of a novel motor technology designed by ZEUS Motor Inc. located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The motor expands on permanent magnet AC motor (PMAC) design to create a new "radial flux, surface PMAC", or RF-sPMAC motor that is expected to outperform other novel motor technologies on the market. Here, the motor showed considerable energy benefits over typical induction motors. The motor benefits from a tightly-packed magnetic steel and copper stator that allows the motor size to be reduced to a thin disc with an internal cavity 1/30th the size of a traditional induction motor. The housing is also aluminum which is magnetically benign. This eliminates the need for external cooling (up to 25 HP), in addition to reducing power consumption.

Soil Gas Survey Results Supporting Groundwater Correction Action Plan (GCAP) Development for the Moab Site

A soil gas survey was performed at the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site during the week of November 6, 2023. Soil gas surveys are used to characterize residual subsurface sources of volatile contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds, as well as contaminants that generate a surrogate indicator gas or otherwise influence soil gas composition. The primary objective of the Moab soil gas survey was to confirm, identify, quantify, and refine secondary contaminant source area locations for uranium and ammonium/ammonia (NH 4 + /NH 3 ) in the vadose zone and shallow groundwater. The overarching goal was to provide information to assist in developing the technical basis for the Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Specifically, the soil gas data will support the deployment of source control technologies; e.g., where supplementary capping, removal actions, or amendments might be beneficial.

Telepresence work station system definition study, part 2

This study effort has shown that the development of a space robotic servicing system is totally feasible. More importantly, many of the key elements of such a system are currently available as the result of previous and ongoing technical efforts. In many cases, decisions remain to be made concerning tradeoffs between options available to satisfy system technology requirements. The primary recommendation resulting from this study is for the development of a flight test bed system that could be used to establish a performance database to assist some of the necessary technical decisions described in the study package. A properly design flight test bed system would prove tremendously useful in terms of rapidly evaluating technology in a realistic setting and would be a great benefit in the development of the operational system.

High harmonic generation in mixed XUV and NIR fields at a free-electron laser

Abstract We present the results of an experiment investigating the generation of high-order harmonics by a femtosecond near-infrared (NIR) laser pulse in the presence of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) field provided by a free-electron laser (FEL), a process referred to as XUV-assisted high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Our experimental findings show that the XUV field can lead to a small enhancement in the harmonic yield when the XUV and NIR pulses overlap in time, while a strong decrease of the HHG yield and a red shift of the HHG spectrum is observed when the XUV precedes the NIR pulse. The latter observations are in qualitative agreement with model calculations that consider the effect of a decreased number of neutral emitters but are at odds with the predicted effect of the correspondingly increased ionization fraction on the phase matching. Our study demonstrates the technical feasibility of XUV-assisted HHG experiments at FELs, which may provide new avenues to investigate correlation-driven electron dynamics as well as novel ways to study and control propagation effects and phase matching in HHG.

Optimizing Grid-interactive Efficient Building Designs with Stacked Value Streams

Grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) are those characterized by the combination of energy efficiency and demand flexibility with smart technologies and communications to not only deliver greater affordability and comfort to buildings, but also help utilities manage grid operations and lower system costs. This paper presents an innovative techno-economic assessment framework to effectively examine different GEB design options, explore various use cases, define technically achievable benefits, and thereby assist in informed decision-making. In particular, building load flexibility, thermal storage, and battery energy storage are considered. Advanced optimal dispatch problem is formulated to maximize the stacked value streams from multiple, competing use cases, subject to the physical capabilities and operational flexibility associated with different designs and configurations. Comprehensive case studies were performed for a real-world building to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different GEB designs and offer in-depth insights. It was found that the proposed assessment method could effectively capture the costs and benefits linked to each GEB design option. Furthermore, the study revealed that outage mitigation and demand response are the two most significant sources of benefits for GEBs.

Multi-Mechanism Flood Hazard Assessment: Example Use Case Studies

Multi-mechanism flood (MMF) events are caused by the combined effects of more than one flooding mechanism. Although floods can result from the occurrence of individual flood mechanisms, they can (and often do) result from multiple flooding mechanisms. MMF events may be more severe than single mechanism events, or they may differ in characteristics. To facilitate comprehensive risk-informed decision-making to protect against and mitigate the effects of flood events, understanding the hazard contributions from MMFs is important. Nevertheless, conventional probabilistic flood hazard assessment approaches typically focus on individual flood hazard mechanisms. This report is part of a research project funded by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) intended to assist NRC in developing the technical basis for guidance on developing probabilistic estimates of flood hazards for combinations of flood mechanisms. Specifically, the purpose of this report is to document two case studies to illustrate approaches for quantifying MMF hazards for inland and coastal flooding scenarios.
