NDMAS System and Process Description

The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) has made a significant investment in research to develop the next generation of reactor technologies as well as to improve the performance and lengthen the life cycle of existing nuclear reactors. Data collected to demonstrate new concepts may also be used in the future to support licensing of these technologies. Provenance of these data must be preserved. The Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS) was established to manage and preserve data collected by fuels and materials research conducted by the high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor program. The scope of NDMAS is expanding to include other nuclear research programs that have the shared need to preserve the provenance of research data. Nuclear research funded by DOE is conducted by Idaho National Laboratory (INL), universities, other national laboratories, foreign research partners, and private companies. This research will generate a large amount of data from a variety of sources over a period of many years. Managing the data generated by the research and development projects presents a significant challenge for retaining data integrity and availability.

Low-Power Nuclear Heating Tests of UN Fuel Particles in Hydrogen Environment for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

Recently, there has been a reemergence of interest within the space-exploration community regarding nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) for interplanetary travel. NTP, as conceptualized, is a compact propulsion source, is relatively light because there is no need for an oxidizing agent and has a very high specific impulse compared to traditional forms of propulsion. These factors would reduce first-leg orbital-rocketry costs (by the source’s low weight and volume) and decrease overall travel time for astronauts with higher transit speeds. Idaho National Laboratory was provided bare, uncoated, and tungsten-coated uranium nitride fuel particles as part of a preliminary investigation. The fuel was fabricated by BWX Technologies and irradiated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology research reactor. X-ray computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy and associated chemical analysis techniques were performed on these particles at Idaho National Laboratory. Both coated and uncoated forms were examined in the as-fabricated and as-irradiated conditions. The tungsten coating was found to be intact following the irradiation, indicating positive attributes for performance under these low-power-irradiation conditions. The irradiation of uncoated particles resulted in nitrogen enrichment at the edge of the particle.

Design of a High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium Tri-Structural Isotropic Critical Experiment for Advanced Reactor Validation

High-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel is a key component of many small modular reactor designs. Critical experiments are an important way to understand the neutronic performance of systems by obtaining nuclear data validations through measurements. Data reduce uncertainty and risk by showing that systems respond as predicted to changes such as temperature, subsequently advancing the overall technology readiness level of the materials within. Numerous critical experiments have been performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory at the Nevada National Security Site since it became operational in 2011. However, the first experiment with HALEU fuel did not occur until 2024. Through extensive engineering, the experiment described in this paper was successfully designed and executed for the Comet vertical lift assembly at NCERC to perform measurements with HALEU tri-structural isotropic fuel that will assist in validation of nuclear data and computational modeling of small modular reactors for years to come.

Analysis of Silver Release from Furnace-Tested TRISO Particles

High temperature testing of intact TRISO particles previously irradiated in the AGR-5/6/7 experiment was performed in the Furnace for Irradiated TRISO Testing (FITT) to directly confirm diffusive release of silver and europium from intact TRISO particles. Testing was conducted from 1,100–1,600°C for exposure times up to 100 h to directly confirm silver through layer release below safety testing temperatures. The FITT analysis showed highest levels of silver release at 1,300–1,400°C which confirms athermal release behaviors previous observed in step-wise and transient safety tests. Additionally, release was non-uniform with some particles releasing a majority of their inventory while others did not appear to release silver under identical testing conditions, which was consistent with historic observations. An assessment of the effective silver diffusion coefficient in the SiC layer was conducted and indicated maximum values in the 1,300–1,400°C range. The magnitude of the calculated diffusion coefficients also exceeded currently accepted diffusion coefficients. The release behavior of europium from intact particles was also analyzed in FITT for at 1,450–1,550°C for 500 h to 750 h. Direct confirmation of europium release below safety testing temperatures was confirmed absent contributions from matrix release. The analysis indicated europium release follows a general Arrhenius behavior and suggests general uniform release and indicates irradiation conditions influence observed release response. Calculated diffusion kinetics agree well with historic experiments.
