Orthorhombic distortion drives orbital ordering in the antiferromagnetic 3$d$ 1 Mott insulator PrTiO 3

The orbital, which represents the shape of the electron cloud, very often strongly influences the manifestation of various exotic phenomena, e.g., magnetism, metal-insulator transition, colossal magnetoresistance, unconventional superconductivity, etc. in solid-state systems. The observation of the antiferromagnetism in $RE$TiO 3 ($RE$ = rare-earth) series has been puzzling since the celebrated Kugel-Khomskii model of spin-orbital superexchange predicts ferromagnetism in an orbitally degenerate $d$ 1 system. Further, the existence of the orbitally ordered vs. orbital liquid phase in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase have been unsettled issues thus far. To address these longstanding questions, we investigate single crystalline film of PrTiO 3 . Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements confirm the retention of bulklike orthorhombic ($D_{2h}$) symmetry in the thin film geometry. We observe similar x-ray linear dichroism signal in both paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase, which can be accounted by ferro-orbital ordering (FOO). While the presence of $D_{2h}$ crystal field does not guarantee lifting of orbital degeneracy always, we find it to be strong enough in these rare-earth titanates, leading to the FOO state. Thus, our work demonstrates the orthorhombic distortion is the driving force for the orbital ordering of antiferromagnetic $RE$TiO 3 .

Spreading resistance effects in tunneling spectroscopy of α–RuCl 3 and Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 Cl 3

The Mott insulating state is the progenitor of many interesting quantum phases of matter including the famous high-temperature superconductors and quantum spin liquids. A recent candidate for novel spin liquid phenomena is α–RuCl 3 , a layered honeycomb Mott insulator whose electronic structure has been a source of mystery. In particular, scanning tunneling spectroscopy has indicated a Mott gap in α–RuCl 3 that is much lower than the 2-eV value observed in photoemission measurements. Here, we show that the origin of this discrepancy is a spreading resistance artifact associated with tunneling into highly resistive materials by comparing with prior experiments and numerical modeling. Furthermore, a similar phenomenon is also observed in a substitutional alloy, Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 Cl 3 , that has a higher resistivity than the parent compound. While the tunneling measurements cannot be used to accurately measure the sample density of states for these materials, we can take advantage of the spreading resistance sensitivity to quantify the anisotropic resistivity of these layered materials and connect to previous macroscopic transport observations.

Spin-flop coupling at L⁢a 0.5 ⁢S⁢r 0.5 ⁢Fe⁢O 3 /L⁢a 0.7⁢ S⁢r 0.3 ⁢Mn⁢O 3 interfaces

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics offer several benefits compared to their ferromagnetic (FM) counterparts, such as high storage capacity and faster processing speed, however, difficulties in manipulating and detecting the AFM moments impede their implementation. Spin-flop coupling, the interfacial perpendicular coupling between FM and AFM moments, can be utilized to control the orientation of AFM moments with the application of moderate magnetic fields on the scale of tenths of a Tesla. Here, in this work, epitaxial bilayers of AFM La 0.5 Sr 0.5 FeO 3 (LSFO)/FM La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) with fixed LSMO thickness (~85 u.c.) and LSFO thicknesses varying from 10 to 50 u.c. were investigated to determine the effect of Sr doping and La 1-x Sr x FeO 3 magnetocrystalline anisotropy on the strength of spin-flop coupling. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism demonstrated that the spin-flop coupling strength decreased with increasing LSFO layer thickness, persisting at a thickness of 50 u.c. (~20 nm). Furthermore, photoemission electron microscopy revealed a domain-by-domain correlation between the FM and AFM domains consistent with the perpendicular orientation dictated by spin-flop coupling. These results demonstrate that LSFO/LSMO bilayers have the potential to serve as a model materials system for AFM spin transport measurements.

Primitive quantum gates for an S U ( 3 ) discrete subgroup: Σ ( 36 × 3 )

We construct the primitive gate set for the digital quantum simulation of the 108-element Σ ( 36 × 3 ) group. This is the first time a non-Abelian crystal-like subgroup of S U ( 3 ) has been constructed for quantum simulation. The gauge link registers and necessary primitives—the inversion gate, the group multiplication gate, the trace gate, and the Σ ( 36 × 3 ) Fourier transform—are presented for both an eight-qubit encoding and a heterogeneous three-qutrit plus two-qubit register. For the latter, a specialized compiler was developed for decomposing arbitrary unitaries onto this architecture. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Positronium Laser Cooling via the 1 3 S − 2 3 P Transition with a Broadband Laser Pulse

We report on laser cooling of a large fraction of positronium (Ps) in free flight by strongly saturating the 1 3 S − 2 3 P transition with a broadband, long-pulsed 243 nm alexandrite laser. The ground state Ps cloud is produced in a magnetic and electric field-free environment. We observe two different laser-induced effects. The first effect is an increase in the number of atoms in the ground state after the time Ps has spent in the long-lived 2 3 P states. The second effect is one-dimensional Doppler cooling of Ps, reducing the cloud’s temperature from 380(20) to 170(20) K. We demonstrate a 58(9)% increase in the fraction of Ps atoms with v 1 D < 3.7 × 10 4 m s − 1 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Tuning charge density wave order and superconductivity in the kagome metals KV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x and RbV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x

The family of AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome metals exhibits charge density wave (CDW) order, proposed to be chiral, followed by a lower temperature superconducting state. Recent studies have proposed the importance of band structure saddle points proximal to the Fermi energy in governing these two transitions. Here we show the effects of hole doping achieved via chemical substitution of Sn for Sb on the CDW and superconducting states in both KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 and generate a phase diagram. Furthermore, hole doping lifts the Γ pocket and van Hove singularities toward E F causing the superconducting T C in both systems to increase to about 4.5 K, while rapidly suppressing the CDW state.

Tuning the interlayer coupling in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Mn 0.95 Ru 0.05 O 3 / LaNiO 3 multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

In ferromagnetic oxide epitaxial multilayers, magnetic properties and interlayer coupling are determined by a variety of factors. Beyond the contribution of interlayer exchange coupling, strain and interfacial effects, such as structural reconstructions or charge transfer, play significant roles, resulting in complex magnetic behavior. In this study, the interlayer coupling of ferromagnetic La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3⁢ Mn 0.95 ⁢Ru 0.05 ⁢O 3 (LSMRO) layers (8 nm thick) was investigated, when separated by epitaxial spacers of paramagnetic metallic LaNiO 3 (LNO), in stacks exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. By varying the thickness of the spacer, it was found that the coupling between two LSMRO layers changes from antiferromagnetic (with a 4-unit-cell-thick LNO spacer) to ferromagnetic (with a 6-unit-cell-thick LNO spacer). For multilayers comprising five LSMRO layers and a 4-unit-cell-thick LNO spacer, the antiferromagnetic coupling was preserved. However, the effective magnetic anisotropy changed, causing the magnetization to cant more towards the in-plane direction. Further, this behavior was corroborated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigations at the Mn and Ni L 3 edges. The XMCD results indicated that the 4-unit-cell-thick LNO spacer in the multilayer become magnetically ordered, closely following the magnetization of adjacent LSMRO layers.

Shifting and tilting towards enhanced piezoelectricity in high-temperature ceramics: an average structure study of (1 − x )BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 – x PbTiO 3 through X-ray and neutron diffraction

A comprehensive report is provided of the average structure of a high Curie temperature ferroelectric ceramic, (1 − x)BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 –xPbTiO 3 (BFTM–xPT) when x = 0.25–0.375 at room temperature. Both neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were collected and combined Rietveld refinements were completed. These data revealed that, of the compositions studied, BFTM–xPT crystallizes as mixed phase material. At x = 0.25–0.275, the average structure of each phase is best described by space groups R3c and Cc. At 0.30 ≥ x ≥ 0.35, a morphotropic phase boundary is present and is best modelled by space groups P4mm and Cc, where space group Cc is the dominant phase. As the concentration of PbTiO 3 increases, the amount of octahedral tilting decreases and x = 0.375 exhibits a loss of octahedral tilting and crystallizes in space groups P4mm and Cm. In conclusion, an updated phase diagram at room temperature of this novel system is given and structural intricacies responsible for its piezoelectric properties are revealed.

Porous Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase enables efficient synthesis of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene

Abstract MXenes, a large family of two‐dimensional carbides and/or nitrides, are among the most studied materials worldwide due to their great diversity of structures and compositions. Their unique properties find use in several applications. Typically, they are manufactured by selective wet‐chemical etching of layered MAX phase ceramics, which are produced nowadays primarily for MXene synthesis. However, the synthesis of MAX phases has not been changed since the time of their use in structural and high‐temperature applications, and it has not been optimized for MXene manufacturing. The main purpose of this study is to develop a porous Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase that can be easily ground into individual grains without time‐consuming, harsh, and tedious crushing and milling steps. Moreover, we also demonstrate the synthesis of highly porous Ti 3 AlC 2 from an inexpensive titanium sponge instead of a highly pure titanium powder and explain the mechanisms of reaction sintering and formation of porous MAX phase. MXene obtained from this MAX phase, Ti 3 C 2 Tx, shows larger flake size and higher electrical conductivity in thin films, compared to the materials produced from the costly fine titanium powder. The proposed approach may apply to the synthesis of other MAX phases as well.

Effect of buffer termination on intermixing and conductivity in LaTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures integrated on Si(100)

Here, the control of chemical exchange across heterointerfaces formed between ultrathin functional transition-metal oxide layers provides an effective route to manipulate the electronic properties of these systems. By determining the layer-resolved structural profile across the interface between the Mott insulator, LaTiO 3 (LTO) grown epitaxially on SrTiO 3 (STO)-buffered silicon by molecular beam epitaxy, we find that interfacial cationic exchange depends on the surface termination of the strained STO buffer. Using a combination of temperature-dependent transport and synchrotron x-ray crystal truncation rods and reciprocal space mapping, an enhanced conductivity in STO/LTO/SrO-terminated STO buffers compared to heterostructures with TiO 2 -terminated STO buffers is correlated with La/Sr exchange and the formation of metallic La 1-x Sr x TiO 3 . La/Sr exchange effectively reduces the strain energy of the system due to the large lattice mismatch between the nominal oxide layers and the Si substrate.

Interfacial tuning of chiral magnetic interactions for large topological Hall effects in LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 heterostructures

Chiral interactions in magnetic systems can give rise to rich physics manifested, for example, as nontrivial spin textures. The foremost interaction responsible for chiral magnetism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the atomistic origin of DMIs and their relationship to emergent electrodynamic phenomena, such as topological Hall effect (THE), remain unclear. Here, we investigate the role of interfacial DMIs in 3 d –5 d transition metal-oxide-based LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 superlattices on THE from a chiral spin texture. By additively engineering the interfacial inversion symmetry with atomic-scale precision, we directly link the competition between interfacial collinear ferromagnetic interactions and DMIs to an enhanced THE. The ability to control the DMI and resulting THE points to a pathway for harnessing interfacial structures to maximize the density of chiral spin textures useful for developing high-density information storage and quantum magnets for quantum information science.

Structural Analysis of K 4 Fe(CN) 6 ·3H 2 O, K 3 Fe(CN) 6 and Prussian Blue

XRD and XAS were used to characterize the bulk structure, while XPS was used to characterize the surface structure, of commercially obtained nominally K 4 Fe(CN) 6 ·3H 2 O, K 3 Fe(CN) 6 and our synthesized Prussian Blue (PB) material. K 4 Fe(CN) 6 ·3H 2 O was found to consist of a fully hydrated phase, which crystallizes in the monoclinic form and a less hydrated or anhydrous phase which crystallizes in the orthorhombic form. K 3 Fe(CN) 6 was found to consist of the well-established orthorhombic form rather than the monoclinic form. The structure of our synthesized Prussian Blue (PB) was found to be consistent with that reported for (KOH) 0.7 Fe(III) 1.33 Fe(II)(CN) 6 ·4.0H 2 O which crystallizes in the cubic form. XPS and XAS confirmed the presence of ferrous Fe(II) at the surface and bulk levels in K 4 Fe(CN) 6 ·xH 2 O. However, XPS revealed the presence of Fe(II) (~30%) and Fe(III) (~70%) in the surface region of K 3 Fe(CN) 6 while XAS confirmed the presence of mostly Fe(III) at the bulk level. Both XPS and XANES confirmed the presence of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the surface and bulk regions of PB. We report that this ex situ XAS study will be used to support the analysis of an in situ XAS data collected on a PB containing supercapacitor to understand the mechanistic origin of pseudocapacitance in these devices.

Production of 1,3-Butadiene from Renewable Feedstocks Ethanol and 1,3-Butanediol - CRADA 560 (Final Report)

1,3-butadiene is a commodity chemical currently produced from petroleum sources. Producing 1,3-butadiene from renewable resources will contribute to decarbonization, provide new green jobs, and reduce our dependance on oil. Development of multifunctional catalysts that are active, selective, and stable for this reaction has been an area of research and development. This effort reported here builds on our prior work for the 1-step conversion of ethanol to butadiene. The goal of the additional scope performed here was to accelerate the commercial deployment of sustainable butadiene production. We demonstrated that the PNNL Ag-based catalyst is significantly more active than the WWII-era catalyst when operated under the same conditions. A butadiene selectivity of 68% was obtained at 64% conversion for the production of butadiene from ethanol. It was found that ethanol feedstock is preferred over 1,3-butanediol feedstock to produce butadiene due to higher yield resulting in lower butadiene selling price (i.e., $\$$0.4-1.7/ lb). Production of 3.0 Liter of butadiene solution in hexane containing 100 grams of butadiene was achieved and delivered to Bridgestone for producing a butadiene-derived test piece.

The Transport Properties of Quasi–One-Dimensional Ba 3 Co 2 O 6 (CO 3 ) 0.7

We have performed combined elastic neutron diffuse, electrical transport, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the quasi–one-dimensional Ba 3 Co 2 O 6 (CO 3 ) 0.7 single crystal to characterize its transport properties. A modulated superstructure of polyatomic CO 3 2- is formed, which not only interferes the electronic properties of this compound, but also reduces the thermal conductivity along the c-axis. Furthermore, a large magnetic entropy is observed to be contributed to the heat conduction. Our investigations reveal the influence of both structural and magnetic effects on its transport properties and suggest a theoretical improvement on the thermoelectric materials by building up superlattice with conducting ionic group.

The CARE 3 Phase 3 Report: Test and Evaluation

CARE 3 (Computer-Aided Reliability Estimation, version three) is a computer program designed to help estimate the reliability of complex, redundant systems; although the program can model a wide variety of redundant structures, it was developed specifically for fault-tolerant avionics systems, systems distinguished by the need for extremely reliable performance since a system failure could well result in the loss of human life. CARE 3 further generalizes the class of system structures that can be modeled and greatly expands the coverage model to take into account such effects as intermittent and transient faults, latent faults, error propagation, etc. The initial test and evaluation of CARE 3 are reported.

Simultaneous measurements of energetic ion (50 keV and above) and electron (220 keV and above) activity upstream of earth's bow shock and inside the plasma sheet - Magnetospheric source for the November 3 and December 3, 1977 upstream events

Simultaneous observations of energetic ions and electrons by the IMP 7 and 8 spacecraft are used here to separate temporal variations from spatial variations during the upstream ion events observed on December 3, 1977 and November 2-3, 1977, in order to determine the source of these particles. Analysis of the observations and comparison with theory shows that: (1) for each of the observed upstream enhancements, energetic ions and electrons were simultaneously present inside the plasma sheet; (2) the low-energy ion intensity profile inside the plasma sheet was relatively flat, while at higher energies there was considrable variability; (3) relativistic electron bursts were seen inside the plasma sheet and also upstream of the shock but at substantially reduced intensities; (4) the ion energy spectrum for the December 3 event, extended to energies of about 2 MeV, was identical in form with the plasma sheet and upstream of the shock; (5) ion anisotropies exhibited typically large dawn-dusk or dusk-dawn gradients and large field-aligned streaming away from the bow shock.

Oligomerizations of deoxyadenosine bis-phosphates and of their 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers - Effects of a pyrophosphate-linked, poly(T) analog

The effect of a 3-prime-5-prime pyrophosphate-linked oligomer of pTp on oligomerizations of pdAp and of its 3-prime-5-prime, 3-prime-3-prime, and 5-prime-5-prime dimers was investigated, using HPLC to separate the reaction mixtures; peak detection was by absorbance monitoring at 254 nm. It was expected that the dimers would form stable complexes with the template, with the degree of stability depending upon the internal linkage of each dimer. It was found that, although the isomers differ substantially in their oligomerization behavior in the absence of template, the analog-template catalyzes the oligomerization to about the same extent in all three cases.
